Why do you use DoorDash, especially with the cost of everything going up?

I'm Alex Bitter, a reporter with Business Insider.

Recently, I wrote an article about how Tony Xu, the CEO of DoorDash, said he was surprised that people spend as much as they do on food delivery. Tony has some say in how much DoorDash charges, to put it mildly, but I still found the comments interesting.

Often, ordering something through DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc. costs a lot more than if you bought the same thing in person at a restaurant or store, thanks to tips, service fees, and markups. I keep hearing about people trying to save money in other areas of life, but it seems like spending on these delivery services keeps increasing.

So, I'd like to know: Why do you find ordering from DoorDash worth the extra cost? Have you tried to cut back at all? How do you view spending on delivery as opposed to other costs?

If you're up for a chat, email me at abitter@businessinsider.com or reach out via text or Signal at 808-854-4501.

Difference between approved and final charge

See image for details.

Am I stupid or is this kinda messed up? The answer they gave is non-sensical.

If they are doing this to millions of people a day they are scamming insane money out of nowhere.

Congrats to the deliverers in Australia now getting a minimum of 31.30 an hour to deliver and getting a fair wage! Let's hope other countries follow this example!

Hopefully you're now not just driving to survive and you can drive to live. I wanna hear from Aussie drivers how it has affected your job and your pay.

my experience working as an bicycle delivery guy on uber eats! 🚴🏽‍♂️

I'm 21(M) and I'm from Canada 🇨🇦

This post is like a little journal thingy, of me recounting my experience working with Uber eats.

I've been doing Uber Eats food deliveries on my bike, and sometimes I do it early morning from 12 AM to 5 AM because that's the time when all the roads are empty and i have the most fun riding my bike! and also the people are still hungry, so I get delivery requests back-to-back.

But whenever I greet the merchants/restaurant workers or the customers during this hour, they see me on my bike and look at me with such a proud look in their eyes.

It feels like they probably see me as the underdog kid working hard to make his way in life, and it's so visible on their face that they're rooting for me.

They also tip good and write good things about me in the reviews. I lowkey don't even do uber deliveries for the money, it is a plus point but I love doing uber deliveries because i love cruising through my city on my bike, and on top of that i get to interact with sych nice people! I love interacting with these people, and it's such an awesome job. I can practically feel these people bless me and wish for good things to happen to me. Or maybe I'm overthinking this lol, but sometimes people shake my hand or compliment me, and it really makes my day!

This one time I did a delivery to a hospital, and there was this old guy standing outside the hospital in his patient clothes. When he saw me park my bicycle and walk up to him, he was genuinely so amazed. He told me, "You guys really fascinate me, you probably have to pedal a long way to deliver food," and I told him how I really enjoy biking. He gave me a good tip after I completed the delivery, but I feel just like Spider-Man the way people treat me as a dekivery worker at night. They love me.

Uber One customers should get priority delivery

The benefits of Uber One just keep getting stripped away from us customers. At the very least, we should always be the priority when it comes to delivering our food. Ubers algorithm has the capability to shift deliveries around, but they choose to monetize delivery priority instead of offering premium service to its premium customers.

New Support System is Trash

The support system that uses a ticket system for support is so terrible. It took them 3 hours to respond to an issue I had. Especially, in the food industry why is a ticket system being supported instead of live support? Like the company should have enough capital to invest in live support, why invest in a ticketing system. Such a terrible decision.

Caught Driver Going Through My Order, Refund Promised Then Denied.

On 8/8 I ordered McDonalds for me and my family. When I got the notification that my driver was outside, I looked out of my window and WATCHED him open and dig through my bag. I also have 2 other people that also saw it.

We ran outside after he dropped it on the porch, and we walked up to his car to confront him. He was still sitting in front of my house at the time because he was ACTIVELY DIGGING THROUGH ANOTHER PERSON’S MCDONALDS ORDER??

We asked him why he decided that was a good idea, and he stuttered and started talking in circles, saying he was “just delivering McDonalds.” Then he admitted to opening my bag to “check the order,” then back tracked and tried denying it once he realized he admitted it.

He then drove off and I IMMEDIATELY reached out to support explaining the situation and demanding a full refund of the $24.05 order total plus the $8.81 tip. After 2 days of explaining what happened over and over and demanding a refund, they told me on 8/10 that they would be issuing a full refund and that it should show in my account in 3-5 business days.

Flash forward to a few hours ago (8/17), I reach out because I still haven’t received my refund. I was then asked once again to explain the situation, which I did and also provided time stamped screenshots showing where I was told I’d be getting a full refund. I was then told that they can’t send me a refund because the food was already delivered and it’s been over 48 hours…

I’ve pushed back against this multiple times with screenshots and dates of the original request as well as the refund promise, and I still get the same bs pre-drafted language telling me that they can’t process it because it’s been over 48 hours but that they’ll do an internal investigation.

Needless to say, I cancelled my membership after years of using it, and I will likely never use another food delivery service again if I can help it. I honestly just want my damn money back, and I’m not going to leave them alone until I get it.

I get that $30 may not seem like a lot, but it’s the principle of every factor of this situation that’s enraging me and making me hellbent on this refund.

Has anyone else experienced this with UberEats? If so, how did you get it resolved?

9 out of 10 most recent Uber eats orders are stolen by drivers.

What is happening? Is my account flagged or something? It was also very difficult to request refunds. I kept having to choose an option the AI provided, and it kept going to a dead end. I had to try and click through so many options back and forth, back and forth. I got tired of it and switched to Doordash almost completely, but I still occasionally ordered from restaurants available only on Uber Eats, and almost every time, my order never arrived. I also tipped very well, so it is not a tip issue. This never happened with Doordash, but they have fewer restaurant options

I never got my food or a refund or even a 'No.' What steps can I take at this point since the in app service is a dead end?

Driver won’t leave door

Delivery instructions include leave at door, no contact. Followed those instructions and once driver left I opened door to collect. 5 minutes later he comes back and starts banging on door and ringing doorbell calling my name but won’t say what he needs and goes on with this for about 5 minutes until he leaves again. 5 more minutes later he returns to start the same thing, but louder. When I still don’t respond, he calls 911 that he can’t access my door. He has this entire thing on speakerphone saying I won’t open the door and he has to be told that I don’t have to open for him. He finally backs down and says he can’t get out of my building but the exit is literally down the same set of stairs and the door has a push bar out…

Honestly a bit rattled over this entire thing as I’ve never had a driver return multiple times to my door to apparently harass me about not showing them how to exit a building. Would love to give benefit of the doubt but I feel crazy like there was anything I would have been able to do besides walk a stranger personally out of my building?

NYC based, has this happened to anyone?

EDIT: Proof of delivery pic was taken and marked delivered in the app. Unfortunately I do have a feminine sounding name and will quickly be adjusting that in the app.

Why would a driver steal a tipped order?!!!

I see if the order was from a non-tipper, but I tipped the guy $7 to literally go to 7-11 to pick up an order that was already ready and drive half a mile to my apartment. I gave him the delivery pin to come up the stairs and drop the order off because I'm sick and instead he drove off with it!

Worst of all, I can't even take away the tip. I wish these tip batter never messed up that feature and now I'm raising and they won't give me my money back

Got Charged for Uber One During Free Trial

I signed up for the Uber One 6 month free trial in February 2026. I got charged for it in June and July, during the free trial. Then when the trial ended in August, it charged me on the 11th of August and then again on 12th of August.

When I look in the app at the transactions, it says I’ve only been charged on the 11th of August, which is obviously bs.

My bank account is Scottish but I’m based in USA right now so the charge was for dollars on the app. But ofc it converts to pounds in my bank account.

I’ve contacted Uber three times but they’ve just been ignoring me. I’m contacting my bank right now but idk how much help they’ll be because they keep directing me to use the in-app dispute form which has no option that applies to my situation.

Idek what to do now. Have any of you had issues like this?

Driver coming back to my house after an hour

So i’m about 2 hours away from my mom and I ordered her some food. At around 11:18 am the food gets delivered and the driver leaves and around 12:30 (an hour later) he comes back again parks at my her driveway. Is this something I should be concerned about? He was there for maybe like a minute or two at the entrance of the driveway before leaving.

Uber Eats Horrible Customer Service

So I'm in Houston...I order from this restaurant called Pepperoni's pizza. It's a 2 medium pepperoni combo for 30 USD (yes sort of a rip but whatever) and when the order arrives, it's only 1 pizza. I go through the app's help process and it says I don't qualify for a refund and here's 2 dollars credit. What is my course of action for an actual refund? There is no phone number they have that accepts calls for customer service apparently anymore.

They don't offer over the phone help or support anymore and both listed numbers for support hang up on you and tell you to use the "help" in their app. I guess I can do a chargeback if anything, but can anyone else give a suggestion that works?

Tipping Issue

Drivers don’t care if I tip $5 or $10 per order. They’ll still take sometimes more than half an hour to deliver an order that’s 10 minutes away. I think I’m done with tipping in my area at this point. Even selecting priority delivery doesn’t do much because most people are multi-apping anyways.

Day 1 of Uber League is wrapping up. 18 trips needed for a Top 10 position here. How about y'alls markets?

I considered trying to get the top spot this week but upon waking up up I open the app and someone had 21 trips before I ate breakfast. That's when I realized some of you are on another f-ing level (respectfully)
