Working with a family

My wife has been adamant I join the railroad. Her family father, and both brothers all work the railroad. I'm cautious though as while the money is amazing im worried how it will effect my time with the family. How often do you get to spend time with your family, has the railroad affected your marriage in anyway? How long are you away from your house?

She seems to think while tough can be manageable, but we have three kids and she has a job that she loves and I can't see her able able to work, take care of the house, and raise the kids all at once while Ill be away.

Colorado railroad.

Got offered and I’m stuck on if I should make this move. I’m leaning more towards doing it but any other railroaders or in the Colorado area, could you give more insight? Moving from the south

Arbitration question.

I had my hearing today may 20th . I was let go for getting sick on my local shift out at rose port . It was the night job and if anyone is from Minnesota you know that job and you probably know who I am . Anyways how long in y’all experience does it take to get a decision from the arbiter? Rough guesstimating ? Thank you in advance

Denver borrow out info.

PORTLAND 1 HUB SENIORITY DISTRICT TRAINMEN

"TO BORROW OUT TO THE DENVER HUB (DE) WHICH INCLUDES (YARD, LOCAL, ROAD),

DENVER, GRAND JUNCTION, LA SALLE, PUEBLO, AND ALL LOCATIONS COVERED BY THE

RESPECTIVE SENIORITY FOR THE AREA"

I'm from the pnw, anyone that might be able to provide information on this location and if you might know where we're going to be needed the most. Just curious, trying to make a decision on if it's going to be worth giving up my pool turn for it

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bad air tests

Is anybody else seeing air tests like this? Our union has recommended we demand a new air slip but a few guys that have done that have been tested pretty heavily since then. Does the FRA have a way to turn this stuff in? Do you think they care?

Coal Train UP North Metra

I’ve never seen freight on the UP N Metra line, but today I saw a coal train south of Waukegan. Two leading locos and one trailing. At first I thought it might be a ballast train but it seemed too dark and small to be ballast. Have others seen any freight on this line? Many of the online forums going back years note that this is extremely rare.

Colorado offer

Got a railroad opportunity in Colorado and I’d be moving from Mississippi. This would be a big reset for me, so I’m trying to think smart before I move.

For anybody who relocated for the railroad:

What do you wish you knew before moving for the job?

How much money should someone realistically have saved before reporting?

Is it smarter to start in a hotel/extended stay first instead of signing a lease right away?

During training, how could I apply for housing or meal stipends due to relocating over 300 mi?

Did the railroad lifestyle make your life better overall, or did it cost more than you expected?

Please feel free to leave any insight. appreciate it

Apprentice Diesel Mechanic

Hi guys I’m currently waiting to hear back about the position of apprentice diesel mechanic from Union Pacific, I’m wondering if any of you guys have opinions about working for UP I’m currently a locomotive mechanic for a small shoreline railroad the hours are good but the coworkers aren’t great and the pay is barely better than fast food, if I’m offered the job it’ll require moving states and I’m wondering is it worth it? How are the hours? How is the home life/ work life balance? Will my life be consumed by working 12 hour shifts 5-6 days a week? Is working for UP as bad as some make out to be?

PS I’m married with no kids and rv full time so being mobile is easy for us.

If someone transfer crafts from mechanical to operating are they classified as a "new" employee?

Title basically says it, but I'm under the impression they can still get canned within the "probie" 90-day period for whatever reason. (Why would anyone switch crafts with that lingering over their heads?!)

When can, or does, union representation with SMART begin?

Follow Up

I’ve interviewed for train crew at couple locations. What the average time people that’s been hired heard back after the interview? Coming from the army as an Apache mechanic.

Failed wheel brake part of PAT

This is the only testing task I had trouble with. The proctor had me do it twice, but wasn't really helpful in their demonstration.

I am tall with long arms and legs. If I straight arm the handle, I am so far back that I don't have any weight on my front foot. Help me understand the ergonomics of this move.

Boone, Iowa

Question I recently accepted a job offer from UP for train crew in Boone, Iowa however I was curious to know is that the location I would be working? And also are there high risk of furloughs going on right now?

Not 100% sure because I've never seen this scenario so here goes and thanks for the help in advance. You're a bumped(LB) ground hog who can no longer work in your terminal. Here's where I'm lost because I would think you'd get sucked up in the seat somewhere else. Going from LB to HP within less than 24 hours then 1.5 weeks the status changes to LA. Does the employee still have a bump?
Waiting on a call back from my LC just because I'm curious. Thanks.
