Veloster N vs Mk7.5 Golf GTI

I’m a car enthusiast in his early 20s living in southern Canada and I drive a 9th Gen Honda Accord with 300,000 kilometers on it and a CVT. I share this car with my brother. Most days for me are movement. Driving between school, my family's business or picking up friends.

In spring of next year, I intend to buy my first real enthusiast car and I have narrowed it down to two that I'm seriously considering. The Mk7.5 Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Hyundai Veloster N. As of right now I am not interested in any other car aside from these two, and having a manual transmission is non-negotiable since I'd like to learn.

Just a snippet of what my life looks like and what I want out of a car throughout any given month. I'm always a designated driver for my drunk friends on a Saturday night where they're getting all obnoxious (and gropey with me). I will often find myself hauling boxes of other miscellaneous horsecrap for my family's business, and I mean loading up my Honda till the rear tires are rubbing on the inside of the wheel well. I'll be driving myself to school as well, and everything I mentioned I would also be doing in Canadian winter.

That being said, I'm also frothing at the mouth for an actual driver's car of some sort. I want a car that makes the commute fun, and that gives me an actual desire to go for a drive for no reason. I'm also wanting something I can make my own and learn to tinker with it.

I like the GTI because it's the quintessential "do it all" enthusiast hot hatch. I'm concerned that it might be a little too tied down and muted. That being said, I like that the EA888 is an S tier modding platform, but money is money and modding the car costs money if I find the powertrain is getting old in terms of stock power.

I like the Veloster because it's got the old school hot hatch vibe, I also like that it can hang with the Type R. But I'm concerned the lesser practicality would suck. Also I understand that there's just less to do with a Veloster in terms of modding and general tinkering.

Found some cheap wheels and tires and want opinions.

I found some konig oversteers 18x8 with 225/45 tires for cheap on market place. I’m wondering if they would work for hard driving in the summer or should I just wait till next year when I can afford a full wheel tire set up?
Edit: turns out the tires are 225/40r18

Forza horizon

Cool to see our cars in the game and im glad they seem to have a better understanding of how fwd handles but the sound is killing me. It sounds like they just used a generic 4 cylinder sound and made it slightly more raspy.

Any other "Totaled🚗💥" members around?

I'm curious are there any other members, that have been in this situation? I got into an accident last week by an uninsured motorist. And my car was declared a total loss. Now I'm fighting with the insurance about the settlement which seemed low to me. No injuries so that's good and the hit didn't seemed that bad at first but when the appraisal came was like, 17k total loss

Anyone else had the same experience, what did you do?

Changed Spark Plugs

Was cleaning air filter and decided to check plugs while I was at it. Ended up changing them since I already had the new ones on hand and I'm at 50.5k miles. New ones are NGK ILKR8E6

Smart move?

More ElaNtra wheels on a Veloster

edit: for reasons I don't understand, the post decided not to include the picture, and posted twice at that.

Not more than a few hours after /u/griffinu posted, a set (with decent tires!) popped up less than an hour from me.

They fit great, the 245s look like they belong there, and I prefer the look to the stock PP wheels.

I can confirm though that the Elantra's TPMS sensors *will not* work with this car, no matter what the mom and pop tire guy's little scanner says.

Elantra N Wheels on the VN

Anyone else have Elantra N wheels on their VN? I think it looks so good! They should’ve came with similar wheels from factory

Also follow my build on insta if you’d like! @bluey.vn

High/unusual idle

Had codes p0068, p2118, p2119, as well as the throttle actuator codes.

Replaced throttle body with OEM, replaced accelerator pedal with OEM, and replaced both MAP sensors. I have a sonata HPFP. Idk what else to do.

The idle does this, and the acceleration is super laggy. When you let off, it takes 1-2 seconds for it to start deceleration (yeah sketchy)

Full set stock tires 235/40/19 Pirelli P Zero (Rockland County NY) f/s

Spring cleaning
Full set of take offs, 235/40/19’s
Lots of meat left on them, 7/32’s on the rear 6/32’s on the front
One has caught a nail, plugged but I’d recommend a patch for reinstall. Tires fine but wanted to mention

Located in Rockland County NY
I “could” ship them at buyers expense but I don’t know how cost effective that would be

Just want them gone, make me an offer 👍

Reliability

I know we will never be able to break the stigma, but how many miles y’all got on your N and what significant maintenance have you had to do?

Help with maintaining carbon parts

Just bought a new Adro V2 carbon wing for my 22 Veloster N and it looks amazing but I doubt the way it comes from the factory will genuinely protect it, especially with these hot months hitting my state which will only get worse by the summer. Point being is, do any of you guys have exterior carbon parts and have recommendations on the base approach in ensuring it doesn’t take on terrible sun damage?

Is it normal to hit higher torque than advertised?

I bought my car recently and the previous owner had added some modifications to the car (although I’m almost certain the ECU is stock or was flashed back to stock) and occasionally when doing a pull, even without NGS on I’ll hit 295-300 lb of torque. Or at least it says so in the N mode menu. Is this normal/achievable in the stock version? I own the ‘22 DCT if that helps.

Need advice, starting issue

For the last week, my 22 DCT with 33k miles will either struggle to turn over or will turn over for an extended period before it actually starts. This only happens when the engine is cold.

Two days ago it started hard before I went to work, then again yesterday when I drove with a couple of friends to lunch, and today it turned over fine, but for about 8 seconds before it actually started right when I was leaving work to go home. So every 2nd to 3rd time I start it this is happening.

Any advice?
