California Bay Area Owned, 3 owners 1/4 million miles. A camper van that is both an adventure and a challenge
What is the best year to buy a Westfalia?
Typically, it is wise to stick to the 1986-1991 models only. Every once in a great while, you come across a 1983-1985 model that is worthy of upgrading to the newer 1986-1991 systems, so it becomes essentially as good as the later models. The Vanagon was available in a full camper, and also a simpler "Weekender" model.
I bought the van with about 130k, and the engine had been rebuilt with about 110k. Rear engine seal leak and later head gasket leak before the second rebuild at about 230k. I put two new heads on it, but the rebuild did not solve the rear engine seal leak. The engine seems solid. Transmission has the same problem it had when I first bought it. You have to put it in second sometimes to get it in first. It does throw some transmission oil out if you drive it over 65 mph, but no major issues I am aware of. The spare tire is like the other tires, but no mileage on it. Solar panel has a controller which charges both the main battery and a small AGM battery. Interior shows its age, and the paint job is fading in spots. Canvas is original and has some places where the cat got it with its claws. Some issues with rust on the back door. Sink, stove, and fridge work, but it can be tricky to get the fridge to work on propane; it works well on gas and electricity. The stove works, but one of the burners does not work on high settings, but works on the low settings. The AC unit has been upgraded, but it was a waste of money. Van comes with a lot of spare parts and tools. Don't even bother to come and look at the van if you don't plan on working on the van yourself, as this van is over 35 years old and even when it was new, required more work than most, but it is a special camping experience. These vans are rare, but they are a project vehicle for the right person who can work on the repairs and store all the extra parts

Question Roof Rack Mountw

Hello everybody, my California has these mounts for, I think, a roof rack but does anybody know the brand or what type of roof rack this can be used for? The solar panel has to be removed obviously. Thanks!

Vanagon air cooled muffler

I’m curious if anyone has experience with the bus depot air cooled bus/vanagon stainless steel complete exhaust system? Priced at $499 right now. Seems like it’s for Type IV motors?

https://www.busdepot.com/071251053es?qty=1

This is to replace my EMPI (bad choice) extractor muffler. I was warned that those things were junk and wouldn’t last, but I couldn’t resist the price. Lasted maybe two years before I had holes in it and now it’s just flat out embarrassing.

I was also considering one of the “OE” type mufflers that I see for sale, but those need tailpipe added on to the price, which makes the complete stainless steel system look more inviting. And I don’t think they’re stainless (could be wrong about that).

Will a tall driver be comfortable?

Hi Westies, I'm in the early stages of researching classic-van-life and before I get too enamored with the possibility of a Westfalia, I wanted to ask - at 6'4" barefoot, will I even be able to fit in the driver's seat comfortably? Any tall owners able to speak to their comfort or adaptations? I'm looking primarily at T3s from the mid-1980s but open to hearing about tall-driver experiences in any model. Thanks!

ISO Subaru EJ 2.5 (04-06)

Looking for an engine to replace my existing swapped ej 2.5 in my westy.

The original swap was done a few years ago, and was not maintained well. I want to replace it, but I’m struggle to find an engine that’s not a JDM import. I don’t want to rewire the engine. And would like to salvage as much of the original swap kit as possible. From my understanding going with a jdm would require a different harness. Any tips leads or help would be appreciated.

I'm genuinely curious.

How do people travel cross country in Westfalias?

We decided to take our 74 Westy on a 20 minute road trip to run some errands, and it was moderately windy and I felt it was insanely sketchy.

I needed 100% focus to keep it on the road.

I really really want to love it, I love the interior and the the feeling but it feels so sketchy driving in wind and I knew going into it but it is quite slow even with the better engine that we put in.

Guinness Needs Paint: Keep the cream color, but replace the brown with????

I want to keep the cream color (repaint) as that's the base color (door jambs, etc). I'm not a fan of the brown. For the brown, I considered KTM orange, as I like that color and it's not too far from previous Vanagon schemes (air-cooled orange/cream). However, I saw a 4Runner Trd Pro the other day in their Solar Octane color. Me likes, but that might be a bit much. As you can see, our future AI overloads didn't get it quite right, but you get the idea.

I tried Porsche Shark Blue, a great color, but it just doesn't do it for me either (I like the Solar Octane better)..

Anyone have some ideas? I'd like to keep it two-tone, but perhaps it's just not in the cards. Even with newer paint colors, it just seems dated to me (not in the cool nostalgic way). Thanks!
