This has most likely been discussed before but new dialoge from the mother about the rho related items suggests that he is not benevolent in the slightest. Like obviously, his "blessings" seem horrid: wings of bone, overwhelming anxiety and a flight response so visceral it physically buffs you. The mother warns about him, even with such sacrifice, his gifts are a lie. She refers to him as "The Broker" implying he's a middle man for a greater power. I thought it might imply the Eater of Worlds, but many rho items and the alters seem to repel it. Whatever he answers to doesn't like the mass either.

His followers sound desperate for his blessings, as horrid as they are, they still would give anything to a god that would hold their survival ransom for sacrifice of either the mothers children or whatever importance you could offer, hence the blink eyes, implied by the mother to still live. He preys on the desperate and afraid, amplifying their fear to empower them to claw their way out of the complex.

Rho wants humanity to survive however. He wouldn't hold back the mass otherwise, so that leaves the question; why? I thought about it for a bit and realized his asthetic reminded me of Grim troupe from hollownight, travelers who venture into fallen Kingdoms to reap the fear and nightmares of their last living residents to feed the nightmare heart. It occurred to me that rho seems to want to keep humanity in this state as long as it can. It cares only for sacrifice to itself and the fear humanity provides it, thus it holds back the mass, knowing damn well they'll except any "gift".

I believe Rho is a parasite that calls itself a god; one that latches to any world drowning in the mass to extort its victims while faking benevolence. The mother has most likely dealt with him before in her own or another world and is trying to warn you before you make a deal with the broker that damns you to an eternity of horror like the eyes.

Anyone ever get turned around at Deadman’s handle twice? Because I did. Went all the way back to the start of abyss. Realized my mistake. Somehow made it back, and then died to face as I was trying to discern which side I was supposed to go down.

I’ve got about 21 hours in the game so far. The highest I’ve managed to climb is 3.340 meters, and I still haven’t beaten the Abyss. With the new update, I’m honestly worried I won’t even make it past the Nest.

How many hours did you guys have when you beat the Abyss and finished the campaign?
