BOTD Custom 8” White’s Original Packer from Baker’s Boots

Today’s BOTD is a custom pair of 8” White’s Original Packer in Horween Burgundy Chromexcel Horsehide with toe-bug, double leather soles, and built on the 690 last ordered from Baker's Boots and Clothing. I’ve got boots in a dozen different lasts, but the 690 is my favorite of them all. The 690 has a very aggressive arch with a higher heel than most of my other PNW boots. This last just agrees with my feet and puts a smile on my face every time I wear a pair.

BOTD 10” Custom LTT White’s Bounty Hunter from Baker’s Boots

These are a custom 10” LTT White’s Bounty Hunter in Horween Cinnamon Waxed Flesh, leather lined interior, inside Lineman’s Flap, and built on the 55 Last.

I grabbed these a few months back from Baker’s “Final Few” closeout sale. I almost never find an 11.5E in any of these types of sales. This is definitely a boot I would’ve ordered for myself, so it was a no brainer to pull the trigger on this pair for over $200 off regular price.

Some Old White’s Boots (aka Figuring Out My Size)

I started a thread asking about sizing White’s boots. https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitesBoots/s/sWE3ly3wlU

Since these boots are so expensive, I really want to be confident about what size I need and the related question of whether I’ll size up to accommodate aftermarket insoles (and whether I want to use insoles at all), before dropping the better part of a thousand dollars on a pair of boots.

It has occurred to me that one way to get more confidence would be to get some used boots, in the model of boot I want, in different lengths and widths, wearing them all day doing boot things, with and with insoles.

Then I can, hopefully, sell these “test boots” for not much of a loss, and order my new custom boots with confidence. Maybe even take a trip to Spokane.

Here is a test boot I picked up today. These are White’s, model unknown but I’m guessing a logger or smokejumper (edit: wait, the heel seems too low for that, maybe it’s a workboot model that White’s may not make any more?), age unknown but guessing 30 years from what I heard from the seller, size 10.5 EE. Pics are as-purchased, after deep cleaning with isopropryl alcohol, and after conditioning and polishing. Will go get new laces and keltie.

Before cleaning, I wore them for about six hours, went straight from the seller’s house to working on my project building. Medium weight socks, no innersole.

What I learned: 10.5 is “just enough” length for me with no extra length, EE is fine for working but - without innersole - is loose enough to be a bit sloppy, not sure I’d want to be scrambling in steep, loose terrain.

Well, the learnings have begun. I’ll next try putting innersoles in these and wear them as a workboot again, then take them hiking in a couple weeks.

P.S.: Any idea what model this is?

NB(2)D (technically day 2)

Got these bone stock Farmer/Ranchers yesterday. Wore them around the house and loved how the last felt. Took them out this morning to an actual farm with the family, and they felt great til the last hour I was in them, when the uppers finally started getting a bit uncomfortable. But I think the 4811 may the last for me, over the 55.

Does White's Brown CXL look like this?

How does Brown CXL from White's typically look in person?

The first few photos are examples of the darker, more muted brown I'm looking for. The last few are examples of the redder/burgundy hue I'm trying to avoid. With some random shades I found in the middle.

Some of the photos are Nick's and some are White's. Since both use Horween Brown CXL from the same tannery, I'm wondering how much variation there typically is between hides and whether White's Brown CXL tends to lean one way or the other. I plan on ordering a pair of Bounty Hunters through Bakers.

For those with White's Brown CXL, which of these looks closest to what you received? If you have photos of your boots, please post them.

Bingo!

So, here is the story…. I am doing some random search on Google and come across a product page of these boots. ‘I don’t remember seeing these, recently. Must be a new release,’ I say to myself. So I go to White's Boots landing page and scroll to see what else might be new. Don’t see anything else, nor these boots at all… WTF. Go back to the product page and plug in my size; says they have it in stock. Called Kim at White’s with doubts they have it. Obviously they did. Small batch limited release from a year ago!! 355 Cutter, Hand-sewn welt, Desert Oasis in Army Green. Half sole to boot! This leather is F**king Amazing. Fully leather lined and wears like damn slippers!!

Size Adustment To Use Aftermarket Insole?

Hi to experienced White’s Boots wearers!

I have a sizing question.

If you want to wear a thicker type of aftermarket insole in your White’s boot, would you upsize the boot, and how much?

For example, my feet are 11 1/4” long with circumference 9 1/4”, measured per White’s website’s instructions. I believe that would normally put me in a 10.5 B. But I always wear Superfeet insoles and would want to wear the Workboot insole with the boot I’m considering. That is a thick, cushioned insole.

Would I want a 11 D or E, perhaps?

Thanks!

Where all my leather daddies at?

I like my leather to be boot shaped. I love the way it smells when it's new and the way it patinas and molds to my feet as it ages. We're all a bunch of leather daddies! Leave a comment below if you're a proud leather daddy :)

GP Cutters

Probably one of the top 3–5 pairs in my collection. From the comfort to the aesthetics, these are about as close to a perfect boot as you can get imo. Not to mention, GP is such a gorgeous leather!!!!

Goodyear welt blown in 1.5 years

Hello. So I've had the mule packers from White's for maybe 1.5 years now. I use them for hiking, backpacking, and general outdoors stuff. I've been on 5 backpackijg trips in them, and theyve been excellent. This last weekend, the welt blew out on them. Just called whites and they said theres nothing they can do other than charge me $275 for a full resole. Not worth it at all. I had synthetic boots last twice as long as these. Ill take them to a cobbler and see what they say. Im just not sure what to do at this point, so i figured id complain here. Its really upsetting. I get these arent the super fancy handstitched boots, but they should still outlast synthetic boots!!! Would the stitchdown packers actually last? Im not about to spend close to $1000 on boots if a few hikes in them will break them. I was hoping these would get at least 5 years out of them. This was a waste of money.
