Mary Cooper is a great mom and gets unnecessary hate online for no reason

Whenever someone complains about Mary Cooper being a bad mom because she’s religious or regressive, I can only think of my own mom and wonder if she was a bad mom too. I genuinely believe my mom is the best mom in the world. What people, especially the extreme progressive ones tend to forget is that, we are all a product of our societies.

A young mom who lived in small town Texas with three kids in the 80s, one of them a serious social outlier, not being religious would make her the outlier. Yes, she was too religious and forced it on the family passively. She prayed all the time and assumed it will solve problems. But, deep down she meant well, just like own mom.

She raised me religiously, definitely had restrictions my freedom based on some regressive religious practices, but did she mean well and only want the absolute best for me? 100% yes. Would I have someone else as my mom? Absolutely not. I’m sure Sheldon wouldn’t either.

EDIT FOR PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT HER BEING KINDER TO SHELDON: There are several episodes dedicated to how she feels bad for giving the extra attention to Sheldon and makes it clear in front of everyone how Missy or Georgie would get to decide the restaurant or how Sheldon needs to take a backseat. When you have someone like Sheldon at home at a time nobody really had any clue how to raise him, it’s obvious that you’re more worried about him. Also, it’s small town Texas in the 80s. She’s probably the most progressive mom you’d get. She made a female baseball trophy for representation. Also the show is literally called Young Sheldon. It’s ABOUT Sheldon primarily.

Does anybody else have a problem with the way Billy Sparks was used as a caricature character, with no respect for developmental issues in kids?

It’s pretty much what the title says. Characters like Billy Sparks who are kids that are not showing the level of emotional or mental development for their age should be super carefully written in a mainstream show like YS. I was quite disappointed by the way he was used an object of ridicule or laugh inducing scenes through out the show.

Why was Sam so rude to Sheldon

I was rewatching the episode where Sheldon gets a single dorm then he lets her use his room and then started complaining about how it was "unfair". But he is quite literally a TWELVE YEAR OLD. NO CRAP HE WOULDNT SHARE WITH AN ADULT??? I completely understand he can be arrogant but she has like zero right to say how its unfair a twelve year old , in college classes, would have his own room and not share a bathroom with full grown adults. like what 😭 all of the episodes shes in shes just overly irritating.

Dr.Sturgis & Dale

Look I don't mind Dale as a character, but the way he treats Dr. Sturgis is just so bully-like. I cannot bring myself to watch the camping episode...

I understand why Connie and his wouldn't work and why Dale might be a better match, but it might have been better to not make them cross paths rather than have an episode so mean spirited.

I'm rewatching the show and got very sad and almost want to skip the episode

Favourite / Most disliked supporting characters

I binged watched YS in the last weeks and loved the series. I think for a soap opera there is a lot of character development even in the supporting characters like Brenda.

I'm just wondering: Are there any supporting characters, you really like (or dislike)? And why?

I.e. this excludes the core Cooper household+Meemaw.

I personally like

  • Dr. Linkletter for his sarcasm and that he doesn't give in so easy to Sheldon
  • Dale for his ability to change his mind about girls but even more about his stoicism
  • Peg because of the wonderful contrast of her character and "the church"
  • Mr. Givens, heaps of minor moments:
    • His face when he sees Sheldon in detention
    • When asked by the principal why he didn't report that Sheldon hasn't been to class and his answer is "I didn't want to jinx it"
    • His (and the other teacher's) faces when the principal told them they have to be nicer to Sheldon OR the need to be better in teaching.

So what do you think? Everyone's up for grab with at least 2 episodes: Mandy, Mandy's dad, Nathan, ...

I just finished Season 1

I recently started watching Young Sheldon because I was getting recommended clips from it on YouTube shorts. I started becoming addicted to it and decided that I needed to watch the show.

I just finished season 1 and here are my thoughts:

1.) Missy is the best. She’s so funny and sassy. I love her. I love the scene that’s in the photo above; and the one where she’s at the church event and she begins dancing while the lady is singing. Pastor Jeff comes to stop her and as soon as he walk away she starts again. 🤣

2.) Mary definitely favors Sheldon, it’s so obvious.

3.) Sheldon was lowkey annoying when Meemaw and Professor Sturgis started hanging out, but, that’s apart of the character.

I think it’s really good so far. I can’t wait to see if Meemaw and Sturgis’ relationship grows in season 2. Hopefully Missy still has the same sass and humor as she did in season 1. It didn’t really feel like there was too much of a plot until the end of season 1, but regardless; I really enjoyed it.

When have you felt the most bad for each of the main characters?

For me here’s my moments:

George (not putting in his death, too easy of a choice ): I felt the most bad for him when he turned down the coaching job in Oklahoma, and his family doesn’t realize how big of a sacrifice that was.

Mary: I felt most bad for her during George’s death, even with the ups and downs and her absolute fuck ups/terrible decisions, you can tell that this left a major hole in her heart.

Meemaw: I felt most bad for her when her house was destroyed by the tornado and she lost a lot of stuff in the process

Georgie: I felt the most bad when he clearly had to take the role as a second parent after George died

Sheldon: I felt the most bad when he was crying because his mom hid the caltech letter and it was so upsetting he wanted his dad instead of mom

Missy: I felt bad for her when she was crying after a relationship with a boy didn’t work out, and Mary went in and grounded her without knowing what actually happened

Question about character ages

In season 1, Georgie is 14. By this logic, Georgie should be 18 in season 5 when he's expecting the baby. However, Mandy says he still won't be 18 when the baby is born.

However, his birthday is said to be in March and in the season 6 episode where Pastor Jeff wages war on Connie's video store, they say it's 1992. This tracks with Basic Instinct being available for rental as it is a 1992 film and would definitely be in stores before the end of the year. Season 1 is set in 1989-1990 so by season 6 it should be set in 1994-1995. I know that the fourth and fifth seasons both end with cliffhangers and pick up where they left off, but it kinda feels like they froze time for Georgie.

Also Sheldon should be 14 by season 6. We know from TBBT that he goes to Germany and loses his dad at age 15 (season 7), so we're on track with him. However, by Georgie time, he should still be 12. Same with Missy and Billy, who are in sixth grade in season 6 (Billy prays to pass an exam because he doesn't want to be held back as he's already the biggest kid in his class).

Anyway, I'm confused and I'd appreciate some clarity on this.

Y si hacen un the Big bag Theory 2.0?

Am I the only one who cannot stand her character and feel she have little chemistry with Georgie?

Don't get me wrong, I love the actress. It is nothing against the actress just in case people think it is. It just her character was 29 almost 30 and he was just a teen!! I hated their storyline. Imagine if Missy had a love interest who when she was seventeen, a 30 year old took interest in her? You would called him a groomer, so why is it okay for Mandy to go for him? I know technically she didn't know he was that young but then when she found that should've been the end of it.

I feel he had more chemistry with Veronica, I was so disappointed that she never made a reappearance I felt they had more believable and genuine chemistry than he had with Mandy.

There are some unlogical things about the chore hcart missy made

Maybe it's a sign that even Missy needs Sheldon who is in Germany in this episode.

From what I would guess with minimal fan opinions what would be at any point majorly disliked characters

I’m just guessing from vibes of what would be peoples least fav characters, a bit biased definitely with Wayne, I don’t like Wayne, but that’s for another time. (Yeah I just took photos off my laptop too lazy to look it up on my phone)
