YTubic – open-source YT Music client with actually good UI
Hey everyone! I'm a UI/UX Designer with 10 years of experience and also an avid YT Music listener, but their web version and the lack of a desktop app were driving me crazy, and the quality of vibe-designed and vibe-coded alternatives wasn't really cutting it for me, so I decided to build my own version by designing the UI myself and asking Claude for help with the code.
The app now has pretty much everything I actually use, but I've already gotten too lazy to keep improving the features, so I decided to share it with everyone, hear some feedback, and get a dose of motivation.
YTubic – free and open source (GPL-3.0), no ads in the interface, no telemetry.
What it does:
- Instant UI – navigation is prefetched and cached, clicking around feels like a local app, not a website
- Floating mini-player – a compact always-on-top widget you can pin over other windows while you work
- Synced lyrics – line-by-line from LRCLIB / Musixmatch / Genius
- Flexible layouts – player docked at the bottom or as a right-side panel
- Hi-res album art, media keys / SMTC, tray icon, auto-updates
- Sign-in is optional: browsing and playback work anonymously; sign in and you get your full library, likes and playlists
