YTubic – open-source YT Music client with actually good UI

Hey everyone! I'm a UI/UX Designer with 10 years of experience and also an avid YT Music listener, but their web version and the lack of a desktop app were driving me crazy, and the quality of vibe-designed and vibe-coded alternatives wasn't really cutting it for me, so I decided to build my own version by designing the UI myself and asking Claude for help with the code.

The app now has pretty much everything I actually use, but I've already gotten too lazy to keep improving the features, so I decided to share it with everyone, hear some feedback, and get a dose of motivation.

YTubic – free and open source (GPL-3.0), no ads in the interface, no telemetry.

What it does:

  • Instant UI – navigation is prefetched and cached, clicking around feels like a local app, not a website
  • Floating mini-player – a compact always-on-top widget you can pin over other windows while you work
  • Synced lyrics – line-by-line from LRCLIB / Musixmatch / Genius
  • Flexible layouts – player docked at the bottom or as a right-side panel
  • Hi-res album art, media keys / SMTC, tray icon, auto-updates
  • Sign-in is optional: browsing and playback work anonymously; sign in and you get your full library, likes and playlists

Would love feedback!

Ask for music playlists only 3 songs now?

Anyone else notice that the ‘Ask for Music’ playlist generator now only creates playlists of 3 songs max? Prior it would have about 40 songs or more. I have thought of more and more practical uses for it but now it doesn’t work.

Why does my YouTube music keep pausing?

it happens everytime a song ends and I have to press the pause button to start it. It gets really annoying when I’m trying to play it in the background.

Why does YT music keep changing what I'm listening to when I open the app?

Sorry if I'm not explaining this right, but yt music is always an open tab on my phone, sometimes I'll let radios play, sometimes a playlist. For the past few months or so, sometimes when I open the app after having it paused for a bit, it has an entirely different Playlist that I didnt pick. And I know I didnt pick it because its almost always one of the same 2 playlists that one of my friends made, or randomly switches to my queue or supermix. Its very frustrating since I'll have songs specifically lined up, and listen to one radio for a couple days, then they'll just be removed for a playlist I didnt want to listen to. :[

any ideas or advice? Help would be much appreciated.

Every other song is AI?

Okay I have used Spotify before and have never had any problems with it. The problem is that I don’t listen to music often enough to feel the need to pay for it.
Then I started paying for YouTube premium because I’m using it in my tv and with that came YouTube music. So I started to use that.

But the problem is that I like to have random songs come on, I don’t spend hours setting up my own playlists. I want to be able to start a “mix” from a song that I like and hear songs similar to it.

But there is a big problem, every other song is a random AI song or a random cover of a song instead of the real thing.

In short I have a big problem with YouTube music compared to Spotify and I’m considering ending the subscription because of that. I don’t like to pay for something when it’s shit.

Has anyone experienced the same thing?

Looking for something similar to YouTube music

I want to like YouTube music it's nice just to use it like the shop or some background music or when I'm working on my computer it's nice don't have to think about it too hard. Lately it's just ridiculous I've posted this before and it instantly got cut off because you know Google loves it's AI slop. I'd love it if there was like no AI button. Like today I was listening to '80s and 90s rock just in the background to clean the house. All of a sudden I hear hells bells by ACDC and something wasn't right. So I go and listen to it more and it's yells bells by AC and DC and then they also had like Prince's famous purple sand album and a whole bunch of other freaking rolling Stone knockoffs. I'm a little pissed because I put no AI generated music in the search bar the first three ones I look up oh well they're all AI. the worst part is this channel had like 400k people and it was just a bunch of knock-off music they had like rap country all this garbage that this person was just making in their basement. Then a lot of them just use bots it looks like to be like I love this music , good music, me like music and just like the most stupid crap to get the algorithm to like them more I guess. So please if anybody can tell me if there's a website like YouTube that has a no AI button because I can't take listening to Prince's purple sand album lol I've already tried a lot of the extensions to get rid of AI somebody told me I'm going to have to get off of Google Chrome and go to like something else may try that next.

Play a random album in your YTM library -- would that interest you?

I've given all my money to Anthropic to have Claude help me build a Chrome extension that one-click selects and then plays a random album from your YTM library.

Bonus: I've also trying to add some little fun bits so I can...

  • Pick a random album within a narrow genre set (e.g., pop, jazz, classical...)
  • Roll a six-sided dice and select from 6 randomly selected albums across genres :)

I kicked this off as a personal passion project because I've wanted a break from whiplash when listening to my music library (especially with cast albums!)... and also kinda wanted getting back to thoughtfully, patiently enjoying full albums the way artists intended.

But maybe this is of interest to others?

If so, I'll consider taking the extra time to submit this to Google for Chrome Webstore review and such.

Let me know in the comments here if this is something you'd find useful and enjoyable :-)

---

OTHER NOTES:

  • This'll only work on Chrome/Chromium browsers, and not on mobile
  • It's mildly brittle. The core functionality could break pending Google-side changes, and the extra genre bit depends on Apple's continued free-lookups-generosity. And even that already has limitations; they do throttle by IP and sometimes entirely block traffic from users using that thing we cannot mention in this sub.
  • For these and other reasons, I'd plan on releasing this extension as KindnessWare: if you love it, let me know and optionally considering making a donation to a good cause (maybe even an arts-related one!).

2 months? Click on 1 month?

2 months free.....what are your thoughts about youtube music. When you already have so many google subs, can we get a freebie? Google throw a dog a bone...

Why are they different?

I click on "my super playlist", I see list of song. I like these songs. I hit the big play button. DIFFERENT list of songs begins to play. Why?

Finally leaving YT music

I’m so fricking tired of all of the AI generated trash music being thrown at me on this app. Is anyone else having this issue?

Queue functionality

Hi I moved from Spotify. On Spotify, if I click a song in a playlist, then add stuff to the queue, the queue takes priority over the playlist.

On YTM, if I do the same thing, the play next in queue goes all the way after the entire playlist. If I play next, it moves it to the top of the queue. But if I want to Play Next 7 songs, then the first song I did Play Next on would be the 7th. Is there something I'm missing? Is this even possible on YTM?

I usually play a default playlist and then if like my friends are in the car and they wanna queue 6 songs then they'd have to manually reorder the songs to actually go in the order they wanted if they used Play Next

Will YouTube Music be banned in the upcoming social media ban in the UK?

I have had YTM since it was Google Play and I have playlists that are as old that I don't want to lose. Does anyone have any insight on this? As far as I understand, music apps like Spotify won't be affected by the ban, but YouTube will.

As a follow up question, are there any music app alternatives that will allow me to transfer my existing playlists?

Artist Listening Badge

Is YouTube Music broken? I earned a “Fan” badge for an artist I barely listened to last month, but it didn't give me one for an artist I listened to for 19 days.

Muse!

Getting myself prepped for The Wow! Signal Tour earned me a badge for one of my favorite bands. Felt pretty so I wanted to share 😊🎸🚀👨‍🚀❗️

Can you filter AI Slop?

With all the AI slop music I'd like if there was a way to filter it so it wouldn't show up in suggestions and be part of autoplaylists. I want to support real musicians.
