Farewell to Phoebe, 14.5 years old and THE Greatest Airedale of a Lifetime.

Farewell to Phoebe, 14.5 years old and THE Greatest Airedale of a Lifetime.

I wanted to post as we lost our girl Phoebe, age 14.5 years old ...just yesterday. In part to give hope to those have older Airedales, as they can have really long lives....but also as I posted a few months back about Phoebe's health. And in part to her Magnificence.

Phoebe was diagnosed with Idiopathic Epilepsy as a pup..at 6 months old, so she battled that her entire life. A grade 3 heart murmur popped up around age 9, and we treated it with Pimobendan. In February of this year it finally had progressed to Congestive Heart Failure and our Vet added Furosemide and Enalapril. She did really well with all of that.

But around that same time we found that she had a cavitated mass on her spleen, about the size of a lemon. She couldn't endure anesthesia to biopsy it, but we decided not to put her down at that point, and I'm really glad we did not.

We've had a great few months with her since then. She's enjoyed her 1/2 mile daily walk and has been in great spirits. We knew that it could be hemangiosarcoma, and accepted that fact. After a few months we'd hoped it wasn't that, but knew even a benign tumor could have brought a similar end.

However, what brought an end to Phoebe's life was likely (we can't know for sure), metastasis from that splenic tumor... to her brain. She ended up having an event in that department where we knew it was time to get her to the Vet asap. She had what amounted to a brain bleed. We knew it was likely the end, and it ended up being so. She didn't suffer and we arrived to the Vet in time for a peaceful goodbye.

But this amazing dog was so much more than her ending. She was our third, and last Airedale and our sixth dog overall. And the saddest part for us humans is that we lost Phoebe's great friend Sadie (miniature schnauzer)....just 25 days ago to a long term illness at age 12. We've lost three dogs from 2009-2014...about 2.5 years apart. Losing two we've had with us for so long over just 25 days.... is real gut punch. But our girl Phoebe was just the best girl...an amazingly smart, goofy and sweet Airedale. She was the sweetest and kindest dog....and it's hard to imagine life without her. She's with her bestie Sadie now...over the Rainbow Bridge. We've lost five dogs now, and it sure as hell doesn't get any easier.

Hug those 'Dales close tonight.....what a great breed.

Does anyone else's dog have a weird, deep obsession with these specific latex pigs?

😅 I swear, out of all the expensive heavy-duty toys, this soft latex pig is the one that gets carried around the house 24/7. It’s about 16cm, so it’s the perfect size for dogs to hold and squeak. Honestly, I love th

Happy 5th birthday to my guy Teddy. Orthopedically he is a mess but he is the smartest and most loyal Airedale of the 4 we have had.

5 lbs at 9 weeks

I got puppy Thor at 8 weeks. He is 9 weeks now but he is only 5 lbs. he was 1 out of 11 in his litter. I had an Airedale about 3 years ago but I don’t remember him being such a small puppy. Is it normal for bigger litter to be smaller puppy’s?

Itchy skin and coat

Would really appreciate some advice. My almost 5 year old male, my sun moon and stars, LOVES a back scratch. Like….loves! If we are cuddling he will look back at me which is “why aren’t you scratching my back?!” and he just loves when I do it voluntarily. Which makes me worry he is in a low level of pain meaning he has dryness/discomfort on his back. I have tried several things over the last few years eg cutting out chicken, transitioning to a raw food diet, special shampoos. Nothing has really made a significant difference. Would really appreciate some advice or stories of experience. Thank you.

Teancum the all-black all Dale Airedale!

He's still a puppy and nothing but bites and cuddles. He's an asshole but I love him and he's my asshole lol. He gets lots of exercise and I take him with me everywhere I can. Our favorite activity recently is to take him and let him follow my truck while I'm out on the desert trails. Its been his favorite thing to do for a few months now, and it let's him explore at his own pace and run all his energy out. 💪 definitely my favorite Airedale I've ever owned.

Help a new parent out please!

I have a 12 week old amazing Airdale that is so fun and full of energy as expected BUT he is a BITER. I am exhausted guys. I have had two consultations with trainers both of which said he was too young to take and that this is just completely normal for the breed. If this is the case, that is totally fine. I just need to know what to do in the meantime. I corrected him and then redirect him as I was told to do but I feel like he’s not learning. There are days where he will not go for the redirect after the correction and will just go at my feet, hands and face and then I have to put him in the crate. I feel like I have no other option but to put him in the crate, but he’s starting to negatively associate with the crate. If someone has any ideas I am more than happy to listen and learn. Plz help.

He saw me cut and give flowers to mommy, so he went and picked me out some.

But he's colorblind... and a dog. It's the thought that counts!

Busted! I knew you were up to something 🧽

It’s funny how his whole presence, energy and body language shifts when he is planning to do something he knows he shouldn’t. Just a glimpse from the corner of my eye, as he is passing by, is enough to sense it. No matter how hard he tries being cool as a cucumber, the excitement and thrill is just impossible to hide 😂

Whoever suggested this, THANK YOU. Total game changer.

Whoever suggested this, THANK YOU. Total game changer. My dog has been extra restless lately with the crazy weather shifts, and nothing seemed to keep her busy for more than a few minutes. This kept her focused for so long, and she actually looked satisfied and calm afterward. I’m honestly impressed.
