How much are Chromebooks used in Hudson schools?

New Hudson residents. My kids aren't school aged yet, but it's around the corner.

We don't allow our children to use screens that move. They watch TV, and we don't worry about how much they watch in the winter or on rainy days. But we don't own tablets, and they aren't allowed to touch our phones. When they leave the room, the screen stays behind.

It's common knowledge that Chromebooks aren't helping education. Test scores are down, and everyone I know in education acknowledges they're seeing declines in social skills, critical thinking skills, attention spans, and more. Even the "they need tech skills for their jobs" argument doesn't hold up with Chromebooks because there's wide reports of Gen Z workers struggling with any tech more complex than tapping an app.

We've always heard that Hudson schools are pretty good, so I was really surprised to see the 1:1 device policy on their website. I'd like to hear from Hudson parents just how much time they're spending on these devices. I'm prepared to home school if I have to, but I really don't want to. At the same time, I'm not assuming financial responsibility for a device I don't want my kid to have, nor am I going to send my kid to sit on a screen all day before coming home to spend more time doing homework in front of a screen.

Moving into Standard on Main

We are moving my daughter into standard on main apartment complex. We are taking a ten foot U-Haul. Does anyone know if the street parking spots around or near the complex are ok for a couple hours of moving items out of the truck? Also how is the availability of spots in the afternoon. Thanks for any advice. The leasing office was not much help.

Lockview is closing and Akron is gonna be a lot less cheesy

Super bummed to come across this — their grilled cheese slapped, as did their beer selection.

I remember reading recently that they were struggling, but it seems like they already closed? Downtown lost another good one.

Akron wedding vendor recs?

In search of recommendations for the following vendors for a wedding April 3, 2027 in Akron. We are on a tight budget. 100 guests on our list (only family and a few very close friends) not sure if everyone will make it.

- hair and makeup (unsure if bridesmaids will want hair/makeup. Looking for more natural style that will hold up all day - I’m not a glam look girl at all). 4 bridesmaids, plus MOB and MOG
- photographers that are comfortable photographing a church wedding. We only want about 4-5 hours of coverage - no photography at the reception
- catering that is reasonable - we’re looking at buffet style rather than plated
- DJ (still on the fence regarding hiring one - our budget would probably be a MAX of $500)

We are between 3 venues and do not need recommendations at this time.

I’ve found wedding planning very overwhelming and am trying to DIY as much as possible to save money. Any recent/current brides on a budget - send me your ideas please 😭

Contractors for Kitchen

I am looking to get estimates for my damaged kitchen floor. State Farm is paying. I’ve been working with Orion but want a couple other opinions. So I need someone that will not only put flooring in but also remove the rest of the floor, replace the back steps, move appliances, replace baseboards, haul away old material, and potentially replace cabinets (I was told all cabinets will need replaced and potentially countertops if damaged in the process).

Does anyone have any recommendations? I had Home Depot come out and they will only do the floor, nothing else. My kitchen has looked like this since June and I’m scared it won’t get done before it gets cold. I can see outside through the cracks in the floor!

I know the picture isn't great, but does anyone recognize this man?

He was seen on our camera last night walking around our property in the Firestone Park area. We unfortunately don't have any video from another angle, this is from our driveway camera. Taken at 12:54 a.m. last night. He came from around the front of our house and lingered here for about 6 seconds, looking around. I think he stopped here because he triggered a security light, and then I think he noticed the camera before walking down our driveway and leaving.

White male, short hair, stubble/light beard. I'd guess his age between 25-40, but he never got closer to the camera for a clearer look at his face. He appears to be holding something in both hands, right hand looks like a cellphone can't distinguish what's in his left.

I called Akron non-emergency line to file a report as soon as I woke up to this notification from last night. But I figured I'd post it here too. I'm not sure if this guy was casing our house but it sure as hell looks like it from the video.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read the post even if you have no information! This shit is scary.

Merriman Hills School Options

My wife and I are planning to move to Akron from SoCal to raise our 6 month old daughter closer to family. (I’m from NE Ohio so it won’t be a total culture shock… but yes, we will miss the constant sunshine)

We have close friends in Akron and have always loved the 1920s houses and culture around the Merriman Hills area, and that’s where we’d really love to buy a home. FWIW, my wife is from the Pacific Northwest and has always had a deep and abiding love for Akron since the first time I took her there.

I’m doing my due diligence in thinking about schools before we commit to anything. We looked at houses in the Revere and Copley schools districts and it’s just not our vibe. I know this area we love is in APS.

What do people in this area do for schooling? We’re not ruling out private school, but I don’t want to send my daughter to catholic school (we’re not catholic).

If you have firsthand experience with the public schools in this area, what are your thoughts? How is the IB program at Firestone? Are the academics good at Miller South, or is it primarily focused on performing arts conservatory education?

I need the 411 from the locals… let me know your thoughts!

Dental student accepting patients

Hello!
I am currently accepting patients looking for dental treatments as part of my clinical training at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. If you or someone you know has been postponing dental treatment, I would greatly appreciate any referrals. We accept Medicaid! Thank you for your support, and please feel free to share this post with friends and family who may benefit from affordable dental care.

Cat/ kitten trapping

Are there any organizations that trap cats and newborn kittens and take them to a shelter? I spotted a mother cat and some kittens in some brush between my garage and fence. They scattered upon seeing me. All I can find online is adoption services.
