Making friends as an adult

Hi, I’m kind of new in town and also an adult. I would like to make friends with other adults, preferably not undergrads (respectfully and with all my love but we are in different life stages). Does anyone have any suggestions on where a nice adult person could make friends with other nice adult people? Im not a huge drinker, like to read, craft, forage, exercise, be outside, I like animals, and in my opinion I’m fun to be around! Thank you for reading!

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Any Good Tailors in Ames?

You all have been so helpful with stuff like this in the past so I wanted to see if you also had recommendations for a tailor in Ames. I just need some slight alterations done for a dress for a reasonable price. Let me know if you know of anyone! Thanks in advance!

Is Ames Right For Me?

In looking at possible places to relocate to, Ames has been on my radar for a while. But I have concerns it might be "too much" for me at times. Let me explain.

I was born with an uncorrectable vision impairment. I can see some, but it has its limitations. I can't drive, so I rely on walking and taking public transportation plus the occasional Uber/Lyft ride. I am not a fan of big, spread out cities, so I tend to stick to places in the 20,000-100,000 range. One of the big draws to Ames is the CyRide bus system, which provides Ames with abundant public transportation for a city of its size. Obviously, it is only that abundant because of ISU.

With my visual impairment, I tend to get extremely anxious in overly crowded environments which makes it harder to navigate. I guess you could say I need my space.

So I guess what I am asking is do you think I will feel overwhelmed in Ames with so many students. I wouldn't be venturing near campus that often, primarily sticking to the North Grand and South Duff corridors and Downtown for shopping and services. Sure, I might go to campus for an event, but it wouldn't be an everyday occurrence. Is every store and restaurant always packed? Are people usually in a big hurry? How bad does traffic get for a pedestrian?

Another thing I wanted to ask about is I have read that the CyRide buses are sometimes filled to the maximum capacity with standing room only. Is this really that common and is it mostly just the buses on campus that get that way? Do they ever have to turn people away? Judging by the map, I would mostly be using the Red, Green, and Yellow routes, again hitting the areas on the east side of town I mentioned before. Does anyone have experience with those specific routes?

Finally, as a single 46 year-old guy, might I feel out of place give the average age is like 23-24? I actually get along great with most younger people despite the generation gap. They tend to be kinder, more open minded, and less judgemental towards disabilities than a lot of people.

Anyway, I'm just trying to make a better informed decision. I have lived in Iowa before and really enjoyed it. Those stops were in Mason City, which is smaller, and Cedar Rapids, which is larger in population but more spread out and less dense.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Warning about Fox Pest Control in Ames

Fox Pest Control is doing door to door sales in Ames. They do not leave when told and they use the public data to use neighbor's names to try to gain trust and act like they have been hired to do work "for the neighborhood." I had to tell them repeatedly to leave my property before they finally left. You can call the City of Ames Clerk's office to submit a complaint to get their solicitor's permit revoked. You can call the main line to the city and select option 6 for City Clerk's office. Ask to submit a complaint about a company doing door to door sales.

Need licensed driver for Iowa DOT road test trip to Fort Dodge ($100)

Hi!
I’m an ISU in Ames and I’m starting an internship in Des Moines on May 26. I need to retake my driving test before then, but the earliest available appointment near Ames is in Fort Dodge on May 20.

I already have my own vehicle, permit, and everything ready. I just need an adult with a valid license to sit in the passenger seat for the drive/testing process (about 2 hours total travel).

I’m offering $100 for the help. If you’re available on Wednesday, May 20, please message me.

ICS Provider Questions

I’m not sure if this is the correct place to ask, but considering ICS is based in Iowa, I figured it’s worth a try.

My husband and I currently live in western Pennsylvania. Our apartment complex has posted that we are to get ICS as our internet provider, making all the residents cancel their current internet plans once everything is installed.

Our main question is, how much do they charge monthly? We’ve looked but even ICS’s website does not provide a price list. We currently pay about $80/mo.

Our other question, how reliable is their service? We currently have Xfinity and haven’t had many issues, so we’re worried that we’ll be receiving worse service.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Lockwood Community Donation Shed!

Hey all I stopped in to Lockwood’s donation shed today and collected a bit of trash but it is in desperate need of some big help! I am moving out of state this week and am really upset that I hadn’t stumbled in to here sooner as I would have just dedicated a day or two to the deep clean and sort this place needs. I thought I’d post in case some other people would see and be interested in getting together to help out! There is so much good clothing and kids things that could be so helpful to so many but it’s such a mess it’s hard to utilize. Lots of bikes outside as well!

Rehoming :(

I have an almost 4 year old male husky who I need to find a good, reliable home for. Ideally I would love to keep in contact and be able to continue to visit him.

Backstory:

Milo found us on the street walking home on Sept 22nd of 2024. He's been apart of our lives since. My daughter was around 9mos at the time (loves him to death) and we were still trying to figure out her eczema and about 6 months later found she was allergic to dogs (we have no family history of allergies to animals so this was shocking). Early on her symptoms were mild and manageable but now at 2 she is breaking out in hives everyday and her skin is so irritated an angry. We have tried everything (besides shots) to remedy her skin but she is at the point of scratching herself up every night.

Milo is a big lover. He is 3 almost 4.He looks intimidating but really he just loves attention and is the very best boy. His backstory we learned is that he was kept outside all of his life until we found him. We got him neutered, microchipped, updated on vaccines, groomed, etc. He 100% prefers to be outside but has no issue coming indoors. He will eat absolutely anything (prefers real people food). Isnt bothered by wild weather or loud noises although calming chews and extra pets and attention do help with that but not necessary. He is gentle with taking treats and is good with my daughter. My other kid is older so he tries to jump and get them to play with him. He also good with other dogs (we have a mini goldendoodle as well) and loves to tussle but I think a place where theres already other huskies would be the best place for him. We don't know how he would do around cats. He will chew things when bored but the bark superchew toys have helped a ton with toy longevity. He is kennel trained. When inside we dont know if hes fully house trained yet because he spends most of his time outdoors but he's a good learner just stubborn. He went through a training course but still has issues with leash pulling because hes SO EXCITED TO SMELL THINGS. He can sit, lay down, doesnt mind being brushed but have treats and make sure he's worn out.

TDLR;

daughters skin eczema/allergies are getting worse and we have to rehome our husky.

if you have resources or advice or know of anyone who lives an active lifestyle and is responsible please reach out to me

EDIT: He understands basic commands in spanish as well 🤣

Pharmacy recs

Who do you recommend for pharmacy needs in Ames? For context two of my kids are on Medicaid for medical complexities and we are at the pharmacy often.

A year ago we were with Walgreens in Ames. Switched to Hyvee because Walgreens was always understaffed and closing. Hyvee has been a struggle. Every single time I pick up a refill I need to ask them to run it through primary insurance AND secondary Medicaid. The final straw was them taking a week to fill a refill for seizure meds even though it was approved by insurance. This was solely because they couldn't get it from their warehouse in a timely manner.

For now I'm switching back to Walgreens because it's familiar and their app is amazing. Who else have you used? Walmart seems to have good hours (weekends) and it helps they are everywhere if we are traveling. I've heard good things about Medicap but I don't think they are open on weekends and I'm not sure about their app.
