How do bunnyhopping and slidehopping actually work?

I’ve been practicing bunnyhopping and slidehopping, and I noticed that I lose momentum pretty quickly while bunnyhopping unless I hold W. Are you supposed to hold W while bunnyhopping?

From what I’ve heard, you should be able to keep the same momentum while hopping until you stop or mess up. But for me, I slow down after a few hops unless I’m holding W.

With slidehopping, though, I can keep going indefinitely without holding W, and I can strafe easily without losing momentum.

Am I misunderstanding how bunnyhopping works, or am I doing something wrong?

An honest discussion about Balance vs Inputs

Respawn’s balance logic around MnK vs controller they recently posted has been bothering me to such a degree I needed to rant I'm not trying to start some argument I genuinely want the game to be as competitive and healthy as possible and I fear for at least my input of choice Mnk it's fading.

They’ll talk about something like Vantage getting worse as the ring gets smaller because her sniper value falls off in tighter zones, sure I agree, but that same logic applies to mouse and keyboard as an entire input. As the ring closes, fights get shorter, closer, messier, and more reactive. That is exactly where rotational aim assist is strongest and exactly where raw human tracking on MnK gets punished the hardest.

And before someone says “skill issue, or just switch inputs” I want people to like...honestly...use a scientific view point at the R5Reloaded Season 5 data people have been posting. (assuming this data is accurate) The latest dataset I saw had 1,549 controller players and 1,680 MnK players, filtered to players with at least 20 games played. Average controller accuracy was 36.54%. Average MnK accuracy was 28.41%. That is an 8.13 percentage-point gap, and the post reports it as statistically massive: t(3227) = 63.79, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 2.25. The same analysis says 60% of controller players were more accurate than the top 1% of MnK players, and the best MnK player in the dataset, at 41.32% accuracy, was only around the 42nd percentile of controller players.

The author also gives the important caveat: this is R5Reloaded, not live Apex, using 0.3 aim assist, and mostly close-to-mid-range 1v1 engagements — but close-to-mid range is also where most actual fight-ending Apex fights happen.

That is not a tiny balance disagreement. That is not “MnK players just want to complain.” That is a mechanical input advantage showing up in the exact range where Apex decides most fights. The seasons shotguns are meta my kda massively improves because CQB feels at least to me closer to fair. (also puts the entire lobby into a peak mindset which 100% mnk had advantage on rollers).

The dev argument always seems to be that MnK has movement, tap strafing, armor swaps, looting while moving, flashy tech, whatever. But that stuff is not the same as having your crosshair corrected in real time during a close-range strafe fight. Movement is fun. Movement is expressive. Movement makes clips look cool. Movement bloat is just giving MnK's advantage away slowly bit by bit, but regardless even so one dead slide, one missed input, one server hitch, one packet of lag, one visual clutter moment, and that “movement advantage” is gone (at least for whatever % of MnK players who don't use movement correctly and it actually hinders them). Aim assist does not get tired. It does not panic. It does not misread the strafe the same way a human does. It just keeps helping.

And now with Deathbox Respawns, even the “well, MnK can poke and snipe better” argument matters less. So even if you get a long-range knock or somehow full kill, that punishment is weaker than it used to be if the enemy team wins or stabilizes the area. You can beam someone across the map, they get finished, and now their team may not even need to rotate to a beacon. They can potentially bring them back right on the box.

So with all the new rollers that are giving even more advantage to the point were some of them aren't even allowed on ALGS (let alone all the 3rd party stuff that I don't even want to go into to because this isn't a conversation about "cheating" I don't think RAA or AA is cheating I think it's overturned for the current state of the game).

Like what exactly is MnK supposed to be “better” at now because the movement advantage argument seems to be slowly eroding?

Long range? Sure, sometimes. But knocks at long range often don’t convert.

Movement? Cool, but flashy movement does not beat assisted close-range tracking consistently.

Precision? Great, until the game forces every important fight into close-range chaos, and your randoms HAVE to play around the fact you are "statistically going to lose" every close range fight 60% of the time.

Engage distance? the inputs both want to take different fights so better hope randos coordinate.

Skill expression? Wonderful, except the other input gets software help in the most important part of the duel.

That is why to me personally the balance feels so bad. I want peoples honest opinion even if you think MnK is vastly op, I just want to personally explain my thoughts. I also don't want to shit on roller players, Plenty of controller players are good and will always be 10x better then I ever could be. The issue is that Apex’s design keeps pushing fights into ranges where controller gets the most value, nerfing long range (which I agree with because truly oppressive snipping isn't fun either) while pretending MnK’s theoretical advantages are equal compensation.

They are not.

If Respawn wants mixed-input lobbies, then rotational aim assist needs a real reduction and/or actual humanized delay. Or separate inputs. Or give controller more movement freedom and lower aim assist so both inputs actually have skill expression instead of one input having to manually track everything while the other gets help during the exact moment that decides the fight.

Because right now Apex does not feel like “MnK vs controller.” It feels like human aim vs assisted aim, in a game built around close-range tracking, visual clutter, lag, dead slides, and tiny reaction windows.

Struggling with feeling good/sconsistent with my aim

i play apex legends for years. my rank is masters for seasons and i don't grind for pred because i have other things in life, but for years i am struggling with being consistent with my aim. one day i feel like i'm a god and i'm holding my mouse in a same grip i always do but it felt like everything just clicks and makes sense. another day i'm having a pretty weird aim and bad day, eventhough i'm gripping my mouse the same, it somehow feels weird/awkward and feels different. i dont know. it has been an up and down journey for me. anyone feeling the same? do spare some tips or advice thank you

50+ hours and still suck

I started playing apex two weeks ago and during that time got to atound 50h. I got to lvl 35, I started doing ladder and i still can't hit most ppl there. I sometimes score some in non-rqnked games, on 120+ games I have only 8 wins, but on ranked I mostly die very early. I am still in bronze 3 and it seems impossible for me to advance - every time I get 5 points next match i am losing 10. I play lifeline (got some legendary skin gor her so stick with it) and i like it a lot (helping other while still ale to move is great), but in ranked no matter what is do every player seems to hit harder than me (even if I have a fully upgraded hemlock) I am trying to hit the head but with controller it is very hard.

Should I just quit? Or any useful tips that would help me stay a bit longer?

What should I work on? I think I have mid aim at best.

Ive been on MnK for 7-8 months now I think, semi actively aim training. Ive asked around sending some r5 clips and I’m told my aim is decent enough but I don’t think so I think my aim and strafing is quite bad. So I figured I’d poke around here.

I’ve learned how to ras strafe and such but I’m talking about more so my 50/50 strafes when mirror or anti mirror. Ive seen WrthCrows vid on strafing and such.
I also tend to miss shots on fast a d strafing either from my end or the enemy

ADS spam or normal aim for controller?

I heard ADS spamming makes u faster while u strafe, is that actually true? And is there any benefit in ADS spamming over normally aimming?

Randoms

Me and my friend mainly play ranked together, and right now we’re around Gold level. I normally play controller style characters because that fits my playstyle best, while my friend kinda rotates between whoever he feels like using. He does solid with multiple characters and doesn’t really have a main.

The biggest issue we keep running into is the random 3rd teammate. Yesterday especially, I noticed a pattern where randoms would basically just “run with their head down.” They’ll sprint across the map, sometimes even past loot, just waiting to hear gunshots. Then suddenly we’re getting dragged into fights in terrible positions.

A lot of our matches end up with us fighting 2 squads at once, or fighting 2v3 because the random wandered way off while we were still looting or trying to rotate safely. Sometimes me and my friend will land, loot and then realize the random is already halfway across the map pushing something alone.

We win some fights, but realistically we’re not pro players. A lot of these fights would probably go differently if our 3rd was actually with us. I’m actively trying to improve too. I’ve been working on aim, movement, positioning, and I recently hooked up my Elgato so I can record fights and review what I’m doing wrong afterward.

For people who climbed through ranked mostly as a duo, how do you handle this? Do you just fully commit to following randoms even when they make bad pushes, or is there a better way to manage games when your random teammate constantly overextends?

Need help with controller

Hi guys! I decided to switch to controller for the first time ever. I've never played with it before, so even basic stuff is very unclear for me. I recently bought gamesir G7 pro and was trying to set all the buttons. I'm gonna write my set up and I would like you to rate it or give any advices. I'm not sure if I'm feeling so uncomfortable because I'm new to controllers or just my set up is bad

L5 Cycle weapons/Unholster with longer click
R5 Healing
LB Tactical
RB Ping
Y Ult
X Interact
A,B - by default(crouch/jump)
R4/L4 I have back paddles set for crouch/jump as well. I use them

What I find really uncomfortable is cycle weapons but if it's set on Y(default) it also doesn't feel great

I also was playing with some setting in Nexus app, if I be more clear, I just copied and paste from one Yourube video. And now when I'm not touching my controller, the camera "goes" down. Is it ok?

Also sorry for my English

What's a consistent realistic aim training routine for controller?

To preface I use CAR and an R99 in most of my training. I first used to do no aim assist tracking, but now I start with single shot R301 flicking targets, then some no aim assist tracking, then some aim assist tracking. I don't do any of these for that long tho.

Must-learn movement tech for Valkyrie?

Im a new player and i plan on maining Valkyrie because shes really fun to play. My movement currently is absolutely abysmal, but i want to start training it systematically now. Which movement tech should i focus on? What is actually useful in combat, what is just "nice to have", and what simply isnt possible due to her jetpack passive?

is Valkyrie viable besides being an amazing rotation tool and how?

So i mained Valkyrie from the beginning of my playtime (last season tho) and now I played some Bangalore games and i felt to be a much more effective teammate looking at supporting my mates in fights...

Like I was much more focussed on the guy my mates are focussing and also has a better overview of the healthbsrs of my mates and when/where to help them.

With Valk i die a lot because i am being overconfident while pushing and I am losing track of the fights my mates are fighting a lot.

So how can I step up my Valk game or should I just switch to Bangalore (I really liked her even tho i mostly used my Q to get out of sticky situations)? I'm a console controller player but I felt it wasn't THAT much of a deal do play without aimassist because like i said: Smokes were my Out-of-Jail-Card most of the time...

Thank y'all

Help me choose a third main and flex option.

I'm a Mirage main. I've been a Mirage main since I started playing in season 5, I have about 1,200 hours in this game - *at least* half - probably more - of my actual playtime has been on Mirage. I could play a decent Mirage game with my eyes closed.

Alter has been the first legend since Mirage that has clicked for me in the same way he did. I have less than a fifth of the stats on her that I do on Mirage, but I've played for maybe one season a year for the last few years up until now. I'm competent with and enjoy her kit, I feel comfortable calling her my secondary main.

I've realized a couple things - one, I like two things in a character. An unorthodox playstyle that feels dynamic and unpredictable, and the ability to bring my team back from a losing situation. Two, I want to learn a third character. I know how to play most of the cast at a basic level, but I want to add another character to my rotation. That being said, I'm having a lot of trouble picking.

I've tried a game or two of the majority of the roster, and have most enjoyed Fuse, Ash, Valkyrie, Lifeline, and Newcastle, in no particular order. I least enjoyed Maggie, Horizon, Catalyst, and all of the recon legends except Valkyrie.

I have a pair of friends that are looking to get into ranked with me. I've never been a big ranked guy, but I think I'm decent enough at the game to hit gold with some time investment. One plays Revenant and Horizon, the other plays Ballistic and Bangalore. None of us really fills an IGL position - primarily because we don't really think it's necessary - but I'm the closest to it of the three of us and think I'd have the easiest time stepping into the role if need be.

TL;DR, I'd like to know which character will play into my strengths as someone that plays Mirage and Alter, will be fun, and will synergize well with my friends that primarily play Assault and Skirmisher legends. If any, that is.

Any tips conduit?

This is my first time using conduit and I really like her I don’t feel as sluggish as other legends and I feel like I can win the 1v2s maybe 3s. I’d like some tips from some conduit mains especially her ult I find myself kind of just throwing it anywhere. Thanks

Console AA is actually hilarious

On 24 ping. Get shot around corner. Didn’t even have to check to know it’s console aim assist. Shits a daily occurrence at this point, always console. Actually hilarious how people think this is skill expression. Desync doesn’t even apply for this. Can clearly see I’m completely out of the door around the corner when I die

Crypto, Cat or Rampart

I’ve been back in the game for about 3-4 weeks and am really enjoying the game again.

For context I was masters player back in 2022. I’ve been playing rampart, cat, and crypto but can’t decide who I wanna run out of those 3.
