[TOMT] Platformer with forest elf collecting gold sacks in giant trees — Atari ST / early DOS, ~1994–1997

I played this as a kid around 1994–1997(ish) on either my Atari ST(pretty sure it was ST cause joystick was basic stick with ball top and big red button with black casing) or early Compaq 386(not likely, but possible. I can close my eyes and still see the level, but the name is completely gone.

What I remember for sure:

  • Character: Short, stout, nimble — a small human or forest elf, not tall/skinny, not an animal mascot, not a goofy kid. High-fantasy/medieval vibe.
  • Environment: You're inside massive trees — not looking at them from a distance. Brown/green/tan palette, thick organic branches you platform across. Huge scrolling level (Turrican-style).
  • Gameplay: Jumping/platforming. Collecting static drawstring tan/brown sacks of gold sitting on branches. When you grab one, a sound plays and a number at the top of the screen increases (like Mario coins).
  • Graphics: Better than Turrican II on ST. Clean, polished pixel art — not ugly, not boxy, not grid-based.
  • Combat: Minimal or none. This felt like a collecting/exploration game, not a fighter.
  • Difficulty: Old school hard — die = restart, no passwords or continues.
  • Tone: Wholesome, family-friendly fantasy.

What it's NOT (I've checked these):
Twinworld, Flink, Apprentice, Elf (Ocean), Chambers of Shaolin, Lionheart, Whizz, Sleepwalker, Super Cauldron, Nicky Boum/Nicky 2, Hocus Pocus, Heartlight, Inner World, Woodys World, Fury of the Furries, Pac-In-Time, Harlequin, Leander/Galahad, Liquid Kids, Rodland, James Pond 2, First Samurai, Blackthorne, Magic Pockets, Prehistorik 2, Gods, Elfmania, Risky Woods, Enchanted Land, Erik, Hoog, Magic Boy, Rock 'n' Roll Clams, Trolls, No Buddies Land, Baby Jo, Flimbo's Quest, Elf (MicroValue 1988).

It might have been a demo disk or coverdisk — I only recall playing one level and it was pretty basic. If I saw a screenshot I'd probably recognize it instantly.

Any ideas?

Atari Falcon video output issues

I finally got an Atari Falcon last week. It seems to be in good working condition except for the video output. I have it connected with a freshly purchased Atari VGA adapter to a reliable Dell SE2722H monitor. Regardless of the resolution I choose, I get a washed out image with shaded bands scrolling up. In the attached photo I have it connected to a smaller monitor that I use for testing. I have a video of it running on the Dell 27" in high resolution with 256 colors (videos are not allowed here). Can anyone assist me in fixing this issue? Thanks!

Introducing Tomáš: King of Rejection (a multiplatform point & click adventure in the best tradition of Leisure Suit Larry) and GLAND, the custom IDE to make it all happen

Just thought I'd create a new post to share my progress.

After having been sick with the flu most of last week, I spent all of Sunday and Monday working on GLAND (my engine is called SCUNK and its mascot is a skunk. So the naming convention just fit, while also staying true to the tradition established by the fine folks at LucasArts with SCUMM, BYLE, CYST, FLEM, MMUCAS and the unreleased SMEGMA), a new IDE for developing (primarily*) point and click adventure games that can be run in both ScummVM and a custom bytecode VM I maintain for ports to more exotic or lower end systems (Atari ST, Amiga 500/1000, 3DO, Sega Saturn, PS1. You name it, I probably got it).

The main goal in developing GLAND is to create a user-friendly development system that enables non-developers to contribute to indie game development and even complete laymen to start (and hopefully finish) their own little games.

The final release will ship with the ability to both package and test games in emulation (for Amiga, Atari ST, PS1, Sega Saturn, N64 and 3DO) as well as transfer the final binary to the target hardware via common USB debug protocols.

The final release of GLAND will be made available completely free-of-charge.

That being said, I still need help getting my game funded so I can work on this care-free.

* Technically, the scripting language is Turing-complete so you're not really limited to just point and click adventure games. In fact, I have made several non-adventure games in that engine and GLAND will include non-adventure templates as well.

Pocket Atari ST / XE, Amiga, Amstrad & C64 on the RG40XXV

It's emulation, it’s not a powerhouse, and it’s all plastic, but plays pretty good.

if you’d like to try it yourself especially if you’re new to retro computers on handhelds.

My original 520ST is working 100% Again :)

First pic is with it finally fully assembled *and* fully working :).

This is the first Atari ST my father purchased in 1986 or so, and has been upgraded to 2.5 MB via a Marpet 2MB upgrade. I also added a SidecarTridge TOS emulator, so I can run TOS 1.04 for better GEM drawing routines (and harddisk improvements). This ST came with TOS 1.00 originally.

"Back in the day" we used this to play games, write some C/BASIC software, draw pictures, and then eventually host a BBS -- first on BBS Express ST! then to FoReM ST. (I switched as FoReM handled multiple drive letters for files much better, though I preferred Express overall). My Dad and I wrote a "Trivial Pursuit" BBS door that Keith Ledbetter himself (BBS Express author) later took over (after asking) and improved upon :). I'm also certain this ST was guilty of costing my parents some expensive long distance phone bills...

Last but not least - I have also added a SidecarTridge that plugs into the left side cartridge port to emulate storage devices and more.

EDIT: BBS was named "The DeadBeat BBS", 1986-1994 - 609-853-8084.

Backing up a MegaFile 20

Hi, I received an Atari Mega ST2 with a MegaFile 20 that the owner wants to do a back up on. How would I go about doing this? I would Ideally want to create a whole disk image instead of copying the files individually. Can this be done on a PC with an ISA RLL controller? Or do I have to use the Atari enclosure and the ST to interface it? Thanks.

Atari st RetroArch core, HatariB with ipf support on android

I'm in no way a developer, but I've made a small edit to hatariB to allow ipf support on android.

It can be found here

https://github.com/HeySambi/hatariB-ipf-android

I've currently only tested it on my phone and I'm completely new to github, so any feedback, criticism, or just confirmation that it's working is very welcome.

Instructions can be found at the top of the readme, if they're not clear enough I'll do my best to answer any questions about my edit and implementation, but general advice about hatariB itself is probably beyond my abilities.

Any advice for reviving a 1040ST

Just pulled it out of storage from the 80s. Hasn’t seen power since then.

What should I do?

Thanks!

Documenting what I assume is my mid-life crisis

I'm embarking on what is certain to be a long and belabored journey into game development for the Atari ST.

Around the time I was 6 my dad brought home our Atari ST. I cut my developer teeth on Logo but never learned how to do what I really wanted which was make games, a deficit which has subconsciously haunted me to this day.

I'm endeavoring to rectify that, starting with Hello World.

This is a *very long* video demonstrating animations made with the “cyber” suite of programs on the Atari ST, circa 1987 (cyber paint and cyber studio cad 3-D). I believe CAD 3-D was the first 3D modeling program on a home computer. these programs even worked with Stereotek 3D glasses. I had the opportunity to try them once, it was pretty amazing! they were surprisingly lightweight and (via rapidly alternating polarization) they synced with the computer monitor— which quickly alternated between the two different perspectives (i’d guess at about 15 to 30fps).

Internal ZuluSCSI mount for Atari Falcon

I will be replacing the internal HD in the Falcon with a ZuluSCSI Blaster Rev.2026c. Anyone have a suggestion for an internal mount? I can print one if there is one available. I'm keeping the floppy installed so that bay is out of the question.
