The Forge, CBD

The Forge, CBD

Visited The Forge, previously Vultures' Lane.

Ordered chips and gravy to start and lamb shank pie a little later.

Chips were half soggy and limp, half crispy. Not sure what happened there.

Lamb shank pie can be shared with another without leaving you still feeling hungry. The meat was fall apart tender but dry so you really needed the gravy. Crust was flaky and crispy on the outside. Pea puree was on the dryer side.

Looks great for social media but photos can't make you full.

The menu naming and headers seems like they're trying a little too hard. Drinks menu is very trimmed down.

Lucky Gs

After gym treat to Lucky Gs. Not going to lie I haven't had a burger since my traumatic experience with Jax Burgers.

I got twice as nice. The buns, I dont know what they make it out of but it is real good and compliments the burger real well. Good amount of saltiness and cheese. 8/10. $17 + 2.50 for Jalapeño. Would rate higher but wished it was a bit bigger. Or maybe thats just being hungry after gym.

Also got some pineapple fritters. Which I dont know what I was expecting but was actually presently surprised. Its giving churro vibe with some sugar and cinnamon. 7/10. Left one for the photo and ate the other two :p

Friend got the vegpocket rocket because vegetarian and rates 8/10. I cannot give accurate review on one but but it tasted good for vegetarian. $15

Overall great hidden gem. Great place to return back to. Bonus is the retro games you can play while waiting.

Tobi review

I absolutely love tobi i thought id share today’s meal, we went via first table for 3 people cost of today’s meal was $98 after the first table discount - All food as shown in images, one wine, pear juice ( so yum) and a ginger beer!

Starting off with my favourite- Kingfish crudo, if you’re a seafood lover this is an excellent dish it’s super refreshing and the sauces really elevate the fish 🐟

Spicy tuna rice - This was my first time having this so fresh, i understand in previous times that i have been that it is busy and they make these in a big batch as they sell so many. However today we went just after they opened and it was amazing, rice was soft and the outside of crisp excellent flavour i could’ve eaten 10

Chilli oil burrata- I’m biased because i love burrata, i do wish there was a bit more spice for the burrata or even some rock salt on the side for the inside of the burrata, but it’s still yum once you cut inside and mix with the chilly oil

Kimchi - This was average, lacked the kimchi flavour and was very tangy i wouldn’t get this again

Crispy eggplant - The outside was crisp and fluffy and beautifully fried, however was on the sweeter side i think maybe a bit of salt in the eggplant before its battered would make a difference as the eggplant on its own is very bland. The Szechuan caramel is a new combination that i’ve never tried it was interesting

Lastly my favourite of them all was the beef bulgogi spaghetti- TOO DIE FOR the yolk on top is just chefs kiss to make these dish rich and creamy, again on the sweeter side but the flavours work very well together and with the bits of beef bulgogi and shiitake mushrooms added lovely texted and taste to the overall dish.

We shared all these dishes and it was great and the perfect amount of food, i would recommend to try it atleast once and definitely suggest using first table for the 50% off on the meal as it does get on the pricier side!

Aiko cafe- Bánh Mì inside the Pak & Save Mt Albert

Unexpected find and really tasty. They have a really good deal on $12.99 for a coffee and Bánh Mì to go.

The bread & chicken was really fresh, I'll definitely be trying again. A bit of a random find, they don't currently have anywhere to sit & eat it , so not sure how it will go, but get in while its there!

The Kraken of all Fish burgers

Around $7.50 for this right here, Superhorse Takeaways, Panmure. Good Fish to batter ratio. Was a mission to finish it personally for me and I’m an eater 👀.

Jadetown - Half Lamb Experience

Ok, so several of you have expressed a want to hit the Jadetown half lamb so let’s hit it! If there are enough people we will escalate to the whole lamb which is $699. I’ll confirm how many sides it comes with. I can’t from memory remember.

I’ve done the full lamb 4 times now and it’s an excellent! First time we did it with 33 people and it was plenty and last time we ordered it and ate it in Potters Park

If we can rally 15 people that’s $26.6/head + drinks for the half lamb. Please note it is a halal restaurant so they don’t serve liquor.

I’m thinking 1st or 4th of August.

Looking for a kebab place to replace my local!

I used to live in Mt Eden, and in my opinion Eden Kebab on Mt Eden Rd is probably the best kebab in Auckland. Its a family run Persian place, and as far as I can tell it blows every other kebab I have ever had out of the water. Hoping to find something on par or better nearby!

I've tried a few places near my new flat in Newmarket, but nothing comes close in quality - though of course they are all willing to charge nearly 20 bucks all the same.

Anyone know of any truly good, authentic kebab places near downtown/newmarket/kroad that can compete? So far its been really cheap ingredients and just generally lame takeaway food.

Before you suggest Lebanese Grocer - totally with you, its delicious, but its not open past 3pm and tends to be pricey.

Help would be much appreciated - a decent kebab is a lifesaver when me and the missus are just too damn tired to cook.

Malatang recommendations

Hey all

Keen to go for some malatang in this chill weather. I especially like the dry spicy style compared to soup. I’ve tried hot and spicy pot as well as Tanghuo kungfu on dominion road which I liked both

Does anyone have any recommendations for other malatang places in central ish Auckland?

Thanks!

Forge (formerly Vulture's Lane) is now open

I hadn't seen anything but happened to be walking by on errands and noticed it was open, apparently the same owners as Occidental and Queens Ferry (next door, not QF on Wyndham)

You shouldn’t be able to post a review of a place if ordered through Uber eats / Doordash / whatever

Your food is going to be fucked most of the time, or at a bare minimum shaken and cold.

When people post negative reviews on here, they often reveal in the comments that they ordered through uber eats, which obviously is going to completly change the food, making your review invalid.

Sucks to see people bashing on my local in CBD when they’ve gotten it delivered like 30 mins away. I mean seriously think about it, it’s completly unfair on the business and creates an untrue negative perception.

There should really be a blanket ban on uber eats reviews, since at the end of the day you’re reviewing a combo of:

  1. The traffic conditions on the day
  2. How much your slave driver gives a shit
  3. Whether your slave driver uses a scooter or bike vs a car
  4. If the algorithm favours you, and your food is the first or last delivery

Edit: a dedicated flair is an acceptable compromise. @Mods.

Feri Cuisine (Queen's Court, 18/368 Queen Street, Auckland CBD)

Finally got round to trying Feri Cuisine (Persian). Went for one of the special (NZ$18) options which was still generous & delicious: One skewer of koobideh kebab (lamb) with grilled tomato, rice, hummus, salad.
