Things I hate about Raving

• When DJs talk on the mic too much
• When DJs don’t say anything the whole set
• When people are recording and not dancing
• When people dance way too much and bump into me
• When people fan clack off beat
• When people fan clack on beat
• When people talk on the dancefloor
• When people don’t acknowledge the people around them
• When people chant for too long
• When people stop chanting when I’m still going so I look like an IDIOT
• When guys put their girlfriend on their shoulder
• When guys don’t put me on their shoulder
• When people give me trash disguised as “gift”
• When I go a whole night without getting anything
• When undercovers try to sell me drugs
• When people don’t by my drugs because I “look like an undercover”
• When girls dress “comfy” instead of slutty
• When people come into the crowd and stand right in front of me
• When people don’t stand near me cause I “stink”
• When people stink
• When people get too fucked up
• When people are sober
• When people have couches in the crowd
• When people keep running into my couch in the crowd
• When the lasers are too intense and distract from the music
• When there’s not enough visuals cuz “it’s about the music”
• When the crowd is too young
• When there’s too many old people in the crowd(time to grow up 🙄)
• When influencers make content at the function
• When I don’t get any views on my content from the function :(

Did I miss anything ?

Stopped fighting for the barricade and it fixed everything

Got to the barricade stupidly early at a show years ago because I thought that was the correct thing to do, and then spent the whole set with a rail in my ribs and someone's elbow parked in my back. Couldn't move, couldn't see past the guy filming the entire thing vertically.

Now I stand two thirds back, near the desk. Sounds better, the floor is less of a swamp. I can leave when I want without climbing over anyone. My pockets are down to earplugs and whatever I grabbed at the gas station on the drive.

Took me an embarrassing number of years to work out what the older heads in the room clearly sorted out ages ago.

Anyone else hate cigarette smoke or just people breathing normal breath around you???

Like obviously cigarette smoke is basically like pouring a bucket of sewage on all us moralistic high-ground CIVILIZED rave-goers, but isn’t the bigger picture that NO ONE SHOULD BREATHE ON ANYONE, Period, full stop, no questions asked.

Like seriously, HOW DARE YOU EXHALE within a 5 foot radius of ANYONE at a rave or festival?????

Do you NOT CARE about MY health & happiness??!

Can you not even at least ASK before exhaling your breath near me??

(I mean, I’ll always say NO, please take your disgusting carbon dioxide ELSEWHERE please, my body is a temple ✨)

But seriously, how am I to enjoy my nasal ket hit when OTHER HUMANS ARE LITERALLY BREATHING AIR NEARBY ME??????!!!!!

I know I’m not alone here

phd in raves??????

hello friends!!

i’m working towards a PhD in anthropology and i would love to study raving from an insider perspective (i’ve been to many in the last three years but would still consider myself a baby raver!) to produce an ethnography. i haven’t nailed down my exact research proposal yet, so my questions to you are:

do you think this could be viable?

if i made a totem that said “please help me get my phd” do you think people might approach me?

On Totems

yesterday I saw a post in the Lane 8 subreddit about his waterfront park performance in SD over the weekend and someone was asking a few questions. One of which was if they should bring a totem. The top response was "Don't bring a totem." without answering any of their other questions sitting at 40 upvotes.

I can see some utilitarian applications of Totems, but in the best case scenario, a Totem wielder is fully aware of the way they are inconveninencing those around them but do their best to minimize the impact to others by turning it sideways or laying it on the ground.

If you're already aware that people will be annoyed by it, why do you value your own desires/needs over other people? How is that in the spirit of PLUR at all?

"But", these assholes say, "How will I find ALL of my friends if I don't have a twenty foot flag 8 feet in the air at all times?"

and my response would be: you come up with literally any other solution to find each other, including the buddy system, hanging back, utilizing landmarks, paying attention to your surroundings, coming up with designated meeting spots, etc.

Also, there's no point in trying to stick with more than 4-5 people at an event. If you are with a group of 20 people, DO NOT be those people that constantly push and shove their way so that they can all stand together.

This is just a further symptom of the larger issue where PLUR has been bastardized to mean "let me do anything I want" in the name of self-expression while totally forgetting the RESPONSIBILITY and RESPECT elements of pluR.

More venues should ban totems.
