What are the names of these two waltz/viennese waltz steps?

I am taking viennese waltz but we have not done the turn steps. Instead we did a move the teacher called a "roll out" where you go from closed to both face forward position. But I can't find any videos for this. Im trying to get the footwork correct.

The 2nd thing we did was where the lead and follow change positions by doing two spins but I forget the name of this also.

Ballroom instructors at fitness club

I started attending a few Latino Solo classes at a fitness club. The instructors are ballroom dancers, and in each class we do some choreographic sequence.

But instructors almost never correct students, we just repeat the choreo and that's it. And I'm wondering why:

  1. Do they think that letting everyone to dance and move their body is more productive than interrupting with corrections.

  2. Or 20-30 students is a lot to help everyone, and they haven't found a way

  3. Or they think that students are hopeless (I can recognize that some students are dancing badly and never improve), and it's not worth their time to correct them.

  4. Or they're concerned that if they correct someone, they'll hurt their ego, and he/she will not come again.

  5. Or because it's a fitness club with plenty of classes, many people come to try a class only once and never come again, so it's not worth to help them.

  6. Or they prefer that students attend paid dancing classes in their private schools.

  7. Or they're running those classes for years, and simply have lost energy to help, they only run the class formally

  8. Or something else?

Is it worth starting to do ballroom at 39 yrs old?

I always wanted to dance and ballroom since I was very young but my parents stomp that out and as I got older life got in the way. Now that my life has gave me time I want to do stuff I wanted to do when I was younger. Dance and ballroom is one of them.

But I also one of those people who need a goal to hit to keep going and all I can see is people aiming to compete as a goal.

I guess I want to ask is

  1. is comp the only goal that dancers aim for?

  2. am I too old to start?

  3. if I am not too old what goals do people aim for to keep them going?

Feedback on Waltz routine

I’ve been doing ballroom for a little over a year now (leader) and focusing on waltz the last 7 months. I have a performance at the end of July with my instructor she’s the one in the video. Wanted general feedback. I feel pretty good about the routine. The routine itself was put together in the last month and a half. Timing at the beginning was off I know and I still need to get my performance face down.

Fred Astaire

I’ve been doing standard and Latin for about 3 years at a private studio. Currently doing open level standard and closed bronze Latin (Latin has never been my strong suit!)

I am unfortunately relocating and the only dance studio in the area I’m moving to is a Fred Astaire. I’ve heard they are very sales focused. Basically I’m worried that they will force me to start from the very beginning of the bronze syllabi to sell me as many lessons as possible, rather than meeting me where I am. Has this been others’ experiences with franchise studios? Should I just skip out entirely and take a break from dance (considering it’s a huge investment).

I feel like I’ve been very spoiled with the pros at my studio, they’re amazing!

Dance shoes for ballroom/salsa

I am currently looking for a new pair of dance heels. I have gotten more into ballroom dancing and salsa dancing and am looking for a comfortable pair of strappy heels (not booties) for dancing ballroom and salsa. With practice, I also hope to be able to use them at my wedding (later this year, and will only use them indoors).

Currently I am in between the brand Yami or Burju, and have seen good reviews for both but can't for sure decide which. I would like to try them on in person, but none seem to be available in my area, just online. Any recommendations?

"Tucking the tailbone", etc. advice

Hi friends,

I have a bit of a conundrum on my hands. I (37M) have been dancing ballroom for a little over 7 years and the one thing I've NEVER been able to get right is the idea of being "tucked", which is essentially rotating your pelvis forward to maintain more of a straight spine in things like smooth.

I'd been told by various instructors it was something I should work on, but it wasn't until I saw video of myself recently that I realized that not only do I need to work on that but I'm fairly certain I have a pretty heinous case of anterior pelvic tilt from all the sitting I did in my 20's.

Any time I've tried to do what an instructor has asked, I've either quit breathing while trying or felt like I couldn't move at all, and I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do about it. I'm sure I'm not alone here though! What are some tips, tricks, exercises, etc you've heard or used to help with being tucked and/or anterior pelvic tilt? My next comp is in 3 months and I'd like to get some improvement on this before then! TIA :)

Nervous about trying lessons, obese and younger than marketed audience

I am 28F and want to try some ballroom and social dance lessons. Honestly, I feel very hesitant about dancing in general so this would be pushing myself outside my comfort zone, but I hope it could help me open up in dancing social situations. I'm also overweight and feel a bit worried about my age and size since many of the websites are marketed towards more mature crowds where I live. Do you think it would be fine or like people would look at me like a chore to deal with being nervous and obese? Maybe this seems silly but I want real answers please 😅

update : thank you so much for the comments and feedback this far! I will give it a fair chance and see how it goes! 🤩✌️

After 3 hours of ballroom practice, what do you do to recover mentally?

I noticed dancers often train the body but forget the nervous system. I made music visualization + recovery audio for dancers and would love feedback.

Dating in the scene

Out of curiosity, in the professional or competitive scene of the ballroom dance world, how much of the percentages of dance partners are in romantic relationships with one another? Or is it for the most part a professional partnerships. Would love to get some insight on this

What do you think of people who go dancing but isn't good at dancing?

I go to social dancing but I do not have much formal training. I've been taking lessons and I noticed how bad I am in class. Now I wonder if I'm just embarrassing myself when I go social dancing. Do people secretly judge?

Keep hitting the girls

why do I feel men get into ballroom that are…well…. I will explain. I danced with a man in his 50’s and he kept hitting my girls during a front cross move. I’m not that big for them to get in the way!! and another one was leaning an arm swing in salsa and my hand hit his crotch. are these guys doing this crap on purpose? Tell me they aren’t.

Skating System Question: Which place to review next after an absolute tie?

Hi everyone!

I am currently developing a ballroom competition management system and refining my implementation of the Skating System. I have run into an edge case regarding how places should be reviewed and awarded after an absolute tie, and I cannot find a consistent explanation for it.

Here is the example scenario:

  • Reviewing 1st place: No competitor has an absolute majority of 1st-place marks, so we check positions 1–2 per Rule 8. Competitor 111 has a majority at positions 1–2 and is awarded 1st place.
  • Reviewing 2nd place: None of the remaining competitors has an absolute majority at positions 1–2. Per Rule 8, we move to positions 1–3 and find that both 114 and 118 have the exact same majority counts and placement sums. Per Rule 7, we iterate through positions 1–4, 1–5, and 1–6, but the tie still cannot be broken. Therefore, 114 and 118 form an absolute tie across 2nd and 3rd place. Per Rule 7, they are each awarded a placement of (2 + 3) / 2 = 2.5.

My question is: for the remaining competitors (102, 104, and 105), which place should be reviewed next, and how should those places be awarded?

I have encountered two conflicting interpretations:

Interpretation A (My current understanding):

Since 114 and 118 are tied for 2nd place, 3rd place is "consumed" by the tie-breaking process between them. Therefore, the next place to review should be 4th place.

Since 102, 104, and 105 have identical marks across positions 1–4, 1–5, and 1–6, they form an absolute tie and should be awarded a placement of (4 + 5 + 6) / 3 = 5th place.

Interpretation B (Seen in some online resources):

I have seen some resources award 102, 104, and 105 a placement of (3 + 4 + 5) / 3 = 4th place. No explanation is provided, but my assumption of their logic is that because 3rd place was not technically awarded to anyone individually, the next position available to review and award is 3rd place. Since these three competitors have identical marks for 1–4, 1–5, and 1–6—and no one has an absolute majority at 1–3—they are pooled across 3rd, 4th, and 5th, resulting in 4th place.

Which position is the correct one to review after a tie is awarded to 114 and 118, and what final placements should be given to 102, 104, and 105? If you can point me to specific sections or official text within the Skating System rules that clarify this exact scenario, that would be incredibly helpful!

Thank you in advance!
