kilian - my first graphic novel

Hey everyone!

My name is Ignacio Herrera, me and my colleague Giancarlo Grosso are working on our first graphic novel and wanted to share some of the artwork with you all. The project is called Kilian: El pequeño guerrero (the little warrior), a fantasy story set on the peaceful planet Azalea. It follows a young boy who discovers a mysterious object that sends him on a journey through time, magic, and ancient knowledge.

I’ve been building this world for years, drawing every page by hand, and I’d really love to hear what you think — about the art, the vibe, the storytelling direction, anything. Honest feedback is super welcome.

Comic Book Artist for Hire – 40+ Years of Professional Experience | Traditional Watercolor Artwork

I’m currently looking for new comic book and illustration opportunities.
These pages are from a story set between the United States and Italy, spanning the late 1930s through the beginning of World War II. Every page was completely illustrated by me and painted entirely in traditional watercolor.
I have over 40 years of experience working in the comic book industry for publishers including Marvel, DC Comics, IDW, Image, Soleil, Dupuis, Delcourt, and Sergio Bonelli Editore.
If you’re looking for an experienced artist for comics, graphic novels, covers, or illustrated books, I’d be happy to discuss your project.

Can anyone help me recover a 40-year-old memory: travelling through history via a barrel?

Hey. I saw a hot air balloon 2 days ago, and for some reason it instantly unlocked a memory of a comic I must have read over 40 years ago. Ever since, it's been driving me crazy because I can remember bits and pieces of the story, but not the title or even what the main characters and art style looked like.

I read it in Dutch somewhere in the early 1980s (so probably released between '75-'85), but I have no idea whether it was originally Belgian or French. I also have the feeling it wasn't a famous series. It may even have been a one-shot or a short-lived series.

The story involved travelling through history, but not in the usual sense where the whole album takes place in one era. The characters moved through different historical periods very quickly. Do believe it was a comical story, so no serious stuff.

2 scenes I mamaged to remember:

  • First Montgolfier hot air balloon flight. This is the scene that came back to me after seeing a real balloon.
  • Rome, actually Great Fire of Rome under Nero. I think Nero was actually playing one of those little harps in one plate.

One detail that surfaced later, although I'm not completely certain about it, is that I think the transport mechanism was a wooden barrel ("een ton"). For some reason that image feels familiar now, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

I think the art style wasn't realistic, but not exagerated cartoony. It had the classic Belgian album layout with four strips per page and mostly speech balloons, without much narration.

The frustrating part is that I can't remember the protagonists at all. Usually you'd at least remember a character's face or name, but all I have left are these random historical scenes.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? Even wild guesses are welcome. I've been trying to figure this out all weekend!

Cleopatra: The Last Queen – A Historical Graphic Novel I Drew for Dupuis

Back in 2005, I had the opportunity to illustrate La Dernière Reine (The Last Queen), a historical graphic novel published by the renowned Belgian publisher Dupuis and written by Patrick Weber.
The series follows the rise of Cleopatra, one of the most fascinating and enigmatic figures in world history. Set against a backdrop of political intrigue, betrayal, war, and ancient prophecies, the story explores the dramatic events that shaped the destiny of the woman who would become the last Queen of Egypt.
Working on this project allowed me to immerse myself in the rich atmosphere of the ancient world, bringing to life legendary characters, majestic settings, and a pivotal chapter of history through comics.
More than twenty years later, I still look back on this work with great affection, and I’m happy to share a few pages from the series with fellow comic art enthusiasts.
I am always open to new professional opportunities in comics, illustration, concept art, and related creative

Asterix Gift Editions

Got the first two gift editions of Asterix and was really keen to get the whole collection in that lovely hardcover only to find out from the distributor that the publisher has no plans to print Vol. 3. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.
