Help!! I’m very new to bass.

I (15M) just got my first bass (a Glarry) two days ago, and have played for about 5 hours in total. Ive been watching some Bassbuzz and following their guides, and they’re helping, but I’m still stuck on a few things. Fretting, muting, and sliding are really hard for me, and I was wondering if you guys had any exercises for getting better at those. I also want to be able to play Roundabout by Yes sometime in the near future (6 or so months) Is that a possible goal, and is there anything I should practice to be able to start now?

Stevie Wonder – I Was Made to Love Her [full version on YouTube]

Bass part originally played by James Jamerson. This is a great example of him using open strings for a change of position of his fretting hand and using them as practically ghost notes while raking across the strings with his plucking hand to get to a lower note.

Find the complete song on YouTube. The sheet music is available through my website.

Incorporating ghost notes into basslines

I've recently started playing bass(about a year). I'm still not in the habit of incorporating ghost notes into my playing. Practicing while playing songs is doable but how to approach for original compositions

I have a question about the way the bass is played in BUMP OF CHICKEN "Karuma", where the guitar picks the bass with such a wide amplitude that the chords are strummed.

Is your right hand picking only the string you are aiming for?

Or are you picking all the strings and muting them with your left hand?

Is there a name for how to play it? BUMP OF CHICKEN Karuma

Is it OK to use both my pinky fingers when learning

Hello,

I am a newb bass player doing online courses. I was wondering if it was OK for me to use my pinky fingers on both of my hands while playing. I saw lessons on 4 finger Bass picking technique, but why not 5 finger? Am I going to hurt myself?

Want to improve myself

Hi, it’s been around 8 months I started playing bass. I can play relatively simple songs like Zitti e Buoni from Måneskin and most of their songs btw, Creep, Smell like teen spirit, barely Master of Puppet and Suite-Pee from System of a Down.. so relatively easy songs.
Do you have some songs that you think could help improve myself?
Thanks

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough [full version on YouTube]

Bass part originally played by James Jamerson. Much has been said about his sound and style: plucking with just his index finger (“The Hook”), the Precision Bass with flatwound strings and high action, the foam mute at the bridge, the chromatic runs and frequent use of open strings etc. But rarely have I seen mentioned what is absolutely essential, at least in this tune: due to his right hand playing position with the middle, ring, and little finger resting on the pickup cover, his thumb was floating above the strings, making it very easy for him to mute the lower open strings with it.
