BTS’ reaction/reach in Europe

With their Madrid and Brussels date out of the way, it’s funny seeing the reaction of the boys to the energy of European fans. I feel like for years, many K-pop companies have been avoiding Europe or giving them minimal stops for… whatever reason.

I think recently that I saw a chart that detailed consumer spending/engagement for HYBE specifically, and I do think that percentage wise that Europe ranked toward the bottom… but even then, just because the percentage is smaller doesn’t mean there isn’t a percentage at all. The audience is there. They’re eager. They want to show up for the boys.

I saw a couple of ARMYs discussing this briefly and someone brought up an excellent point. Yes, it seems they were pleasantly surprised with the reaction from fans in Europe, but it also feels like the amount of fame that they have still hasn’t hit them regardless of where they go.

I mean, think about it. BTS had a decent presence outside of Korea pre-2020, but after Dynamite, they really blew up (pun intended). But Dynamite was released during the pandemic, a time in which it was difficult for them to meet fans in person. MOTS was canceled, some of the concerts that they were able to hold were either online, in select areas that were already “hotspots” in the past, or strict venues with guidelines that prevented cheering.

Okay, sure, but what about after pandemic restrictions were lifted?

Hiatus. Military service. Solo albums and solo concerts that took place in smaller venues (with a few exceptions).

It begs the question if… this type of fame has hit them yet. If it’s as tangible to them as it is to us. Numbers are one thing, but it’s insane to see numbers in action. I mean, we hear stories about artists with millions of followers, listeners, and crazy radio play… and yet a lot of the acts still struggle to do a tenth of what BTS do in a physical sense. They can’t get fans to show up. They have to cancel concerts.

Maybe it feels unreal as unreal can get.

This could just be entirely conjecture on my part, but I think I just appreciate how humble they are as people in general. They still feel so normal, so next-door-type to me despite how famous they are. I think it just reminds me of what drew me to them in the first place.
