I don't think he was meant to be that much older but during the years when the Duffers could not sell a script to save their lives, El was originally the male protagonist. Then 2015 comes, Ross marries Leigh, the scripts gets bought after years of rejection from studios, the show gets greenlit and suddenly El is a little girl, and a cultural phenomenon is born.
As if it has done them any good, as if they ever moved on!

Summary:

So it looks like Netflix is willing to categorize their biggest property as a gay show after all. All the speculating about how they got cold feet and removed scenes that may have hinted Byler Endgame from Volume 2 are unfounded IMO. This is consistent with the documentary where the Duffers admit on camera that Netflix just wanted a finished script and they couldn't deliver.
Everything about how ST5 is a mess along with how they destroyed Byler and other couples including Robin/Vickie is the Duffer Brothers fault and Netflix had nothing to do with it IMO.
We know the Duffel Bags cannot write the word ‘gay’ in their script. I don’t believe Robin called herself ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’ when she come out to Steve. Steve stated “how could you like Tammy if she was a girl?” Which it was her way of saying ‘I’m gay’ to Steve.
We know Will is hinting in his coming out scene that he was different. Yeah, he mentioned that ‘he doesn’t like girls’. I know some general audience like to believe Will is ‘straight’ because he didn’t say the word ‘I’m gay’.
After the whole sorcerer scene and Will’s power, the characters might already know he was different at the point. I don’t think Will mentioned a gender when it came to talking about his ‘crush’.
