Quotes from Tosh's presser after UNLV 39-31 loss
Credit to our reporters Thomas Dunn on X @ Thomasdunn24 and Joaquin Ruiz on X @ WalkingRuiz
On the 39-31 loss to UNLV:
“… The fact that those guys came out there at halftime after a really poor performance in a fight like they did, it was awesome. And it told me I got a team still that believes in me as I believe in them …”
“We must improve on critical situations.”
On if QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele could go back in
“Jaron, when we came out, was medically cleared. I personally was not comfortable with the way he came off the field. He was medically cleared to go in. I made that decision to not jeopardize Jaron’s health. Much more important than any game is his health. I made that decision, not going to put anyone in harms way.”
He also praised Jackson Brousseau’s performance.
On the tidal wave of Cal penalties
“Unacceptable. When our team meeting starts with the word discipline, showing the penalties that lack it. Got to do more. I got to do more and I will. We can’t expect to get any different results if we’re just highlighting them in meetings. Create consequences for them because they’re creating consequences for us.”
On the OL surrendering gigantic amounts of pressure
“Starts with me as far as the approach. We did a lot of things this week in attempts to give us a spark. As we sputtered out and didn’t perform, what sparked us was reps we didn’t do a lot of practice for. When it comes to 4 man, our OL has done a substantial job in blocking guys. When they bring 7, we’ve got to have answers for that.”
On the explosive plays given up defensively and the consistent problems against the run
“Execution, one individual didn’t execute their assignment. The defense will not work, whether it’s 10 or 9 guys doing their job. Didn’t cancel their gap. It starts with me. Defense will not work if we don’t execute our job and communication. Should’ve stayed as it was and we have to resound our communication. [It was] like the parting sea there."
Tosh Lupoi on Jackson Brousseau’s, Taimane Purcell’s and Niles Davis’ effort
On JB: “He practices like that. We make sure to get reps throughout the week to make sure they’re ready. Fired up to see the way he came out.”
On TP: Our job to do so (to get him more involved). Got to make sure we put our best players on the field. He’s got an awesome future with us. Guys like that can spark us.”
