The first Toronto Mayoral Debate is being moderated by an absolute buffoon

Jesse Brown? Are we fucking serious?

---------------

According to a press release issued today by the Jewish Lawyers of Canada, their organization will be hosting the first mayoral debate of the 2026 Toronto Municipal Election, on September 8^(th) in front of a hand-picked audience of 1,200 people, specifically “to discuss public safety, antisemitism”, and other unenumerated issues. Most notably, the moderator of this debate will be none other than Jesse Brown, of Canadaland infamy.

If you’re unfamiliar with this notorious man, allow me to bring you up to speed. https://www.jakelandau.ca/p/the-first-toronto-mayoral-debate

Jesse Brown re-tweeting slander against Palestinian pediatrician Hussam Abu Safiya

Despite Israeli allegations of Dr. Safiya being involved in terrorist activities, he has been detained without charge since December 2024. His detention has been condemned by numerous human rights and medical associations, and his lawyers report that he is experiencing torture and daily abuse. Israel has been well documented committing war crimes against healthcare facilities and workers in Gaza.

Jesse finds a new way to sink lower and lower every day.

Today's the Big Story on Antisemitism on Canadian College Campuses

Did anyone else listen? There was no subreddit for the show I could find, so I came here. I know it isn't directly Canadaland related, but it is a critique of Canadian media, so maybe?

I just kept wondering about these stories.

Like, I used to work with someone (they moved on to a different company) who felt simply agreeing that Palestine was a place, and Palestinians were people, was "antisemitic" so I'm torn between believing these students, but also wondering just what kind of "antisemitic comments" are being said in an Engineering class by a professor. Like, how does it come up?

Actual accounts are not outlined as of where I paused (over half way through the discussion) and the host and guest have moved on to discussing how to make Jewish students feel more welcomed on campus, so I do not think I'm going to be getting any examples of what these students were facing.

It just feels like a bait and switch. Why not provide at least one or two examples? If I were to accuse someone of sexism, I would be asked to provide an example.

ETA - the York U Prof who committed "an act of vandalism" at an Indigo bookstore was referenced. Good god.

Hitler font?

I dunno, man. First off, I can’t seem to find “Hitler font” anywhere in my Google Docs. Second, it’s not even the same fucking font.

There are legit things in that package that someone who read it might find a reason to argue about. But of all the dumb takes available, Jesse picked the one that can’t even pass a visual fact-check.

AMA w/ Jeremy Appel (The Orchard) on Postmedia + far-right politics in Canadian news

https://preview.redd.it/i9l3q14ss0jh1.png?width=2400&format=png&auto=webp&s=c9ff6c551eafbb6d4baae9cab80b0d2cce66ee38

Join journalist Jeremy Appel (The Orchard) and Ricochet’s editors on r/RicochetMedia next Wednesday, August 19th at 7PM ET for an AMA dive deep into his latest piece, ‘Dumpster fire’: Postmedia’s decade of pushing Canada’s politics to the right.

Jeremy’s piece breaks down how Postmedia, Canada’s largest newspaper chain, has amplified conservative grievance politics — creating fertile ground for MAGA-style ideas, Alberta separation, and an increasingly polarized landscape in Canadian news.

Ask your questions about his reporting, Alberta politics, Canada’s news landscape, and more!

Canada is burning. Why won’t CBC tell us why?

NEW FROM TARA MAHONEY

When the public broadcaster reports on wildfires, heat, and extreme weather without connecting the dots to fossil fuels, it leaves Canadians without the context they need to understand the crisis unfolding around them.

Jesse Brown points to unsubstantiated opinion pieces as 'proof' that anti-Zionism is to blame for anti-Jewish attacks

Jesse has had a busy couple days on Twitter attacking 'anti-Zionism' as the cause for any incidents targeting Jewish Canadians. As part of this, Jesse references two recent pieces in the Globe and Mail and Wall Street Journal to bolster good claims; it's not just Jesse saying this, look at these two respected newspapers saying the same thing. If they can blame everything on 'anti-Zionism' why can't Carney/others in power?

Except, it's of course not that simple. Both linked pieces are from opinion sections of their respective papers. The Globe piece is from the Editorial Board, so the claim the *paper* is saying this is somewhat accurate. That said, it doesn't actually lay blame for any specific incident on 'anti-Zionism' but rather only that Carney's speech "fell flat" because it didn't mention anti-Zionism (while also using an, in my experience, inaccurate definition of 'anti-Zionism'). Jesse implies the editorial had more to say on anti-Zionism than it does.

The second article is more ridiculous, and certainly doesn't represent the 'voice' of the WSJ. It was published as part of the WSJ's Free Expression newsletter of opinion pieces, and it's exactly what you would expect from that. The article reads like many of Jesse's recent rants, directly connecting all recent events targeting Canadian Jews (including some events that seem tenuously connected at best, like the recent INKAS facility shooting) with Canada's pro-Palestinian/anti-Zionist movement with absolutely zero evidence offered to support that conclusion. Other bizarre, unsupported, or inaccurate claims include:

- a ridiculous suggestion that Canada (or some municipalities/provinces) are about to institute beaches where Jewish people are banned

- visible Jews have been "fired on" by passing cars (without clarifying that they were fired on with toy guns, still an awful thing to happen but seemingly intentionally misrepresenting the events to sound worse)

- that the slogan "free Palestine" is impossible to understand / doesn't really mean anything

- that Mayor Chow is "a far-left radical so insidious she rivals New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani" (really? I wish...)

- that pro-Palestinian protesters have primarily/exclusively targeted Jewish neighboirhoods and families (not true)

- that anti-Zionism is devoted to "dissolving [Israel] and driving the [Jewish people]" living there into the sea (a common claim that's easy to confirm at not a common belief by simply listening to 'anti-Zionists')

- that it is impossible for a politician to 'stand with the Jewish community' in Canada, while now simultaneously being supportive of the actions of the Israeli state

- that politicians like Doug Ford are not serious about antisemitic crime, because they haven't (illegally) interfered in the justice system to prevent someone from getting bail

I'll link the articles below if anyone wants to eat them (though you're not missing much of you don't). Either way, this is another strong example of self-styled 'journalist' Jesse Brown using his position to intentionally spread misrepresentations and profit falsehoods to advance his political goals (ie, propaganda).
