Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Cedar Rapids School and Required Home visit

Hey, Cedar Rapids! I wanted to get your opinion on this. My daughter is starting preschool. Her Mom and I received this email. I've hidden any personal information of the teacher. I'm curious about the Home visit as this is the first time I've heard of it and do not remember it being a thing for a 7 year old going into 2nd grade. Someone I mentioned it to at work stated its a law requring a home visit. I can not find information supporting that but the email is stating it's requirement.

I need your helping to find my missed connection

Looking for someone I met on a flight from Cedar Rapids to Chicago on August 15. You were from Ottawa and had been visiting a friend in Cedar Rapids; I was headed back to California. We talked most of the flight about work, travel and a word game. I regretted not asking for your number before we split up at O’Hare. If this sounds like you—or your friend who was visiting from Ottawa—message me and tell me something we talked about so I know it’s you.

Plumber for water heater replacement?

I'm looking to get a new power vent water heater and I'm shocked at the quotes I'm receiving. The units sell for about $1200 at Menards (consumer pricing - I'm sure plumbers can get them cheaper) and I'm getting total job prices in the neighborhood of $3200-$3500 for a straight drop-in replacement. $2000+ for labor and disposal seems ridiculous.

Any suggestions for good, affordable plumbers?

Don't buy carpet at home depot.

We bought carpet from home depot. They require a person come out and measure "so things go smoothly. The guy came out and measured, made a drawing on his tablet of seam location and size of room.

The carpet was special order and should arrive in 4 weeks. We got a call two weeks later that the carpet was in and we could get it installed right away. Great!

The installer came out and we were talking through the job and his drawing from home depot had the seam in a high traffic area in front of the doorway.(my guess is they "got" this carpet early because it was in their warehouse when we ordered but not big enough to be installed per drawing so they changed it)

We had the carpet reordered. Anouther 4 weeks.

The installers came today removed the old carpet and pad,and put down new pad. They brought in the carpet enrolled it to find it was cut short, so we would need two seams in high traffic areas.

We called home depot and they said it would be anouther 4 weeks to get replacement carpet.

We canceled the order.

Ridiculous!

Are you planning to give birth out of town due to a lack of available options?

Gazette reporter Fern Alling is working on a story about maternal healthcare deserts in the state and how distance to a delivery unit impacts the care pregnant people receive.

They're interested in talking to anyone who is currently pregnant and planning to give birth 30+ minutes away from home or someone who has given birth out of town due to a lack of available options — whether they made it to the hospital or delivered in a car/ambulance.

If you are interested in sharing your story, please email Fern at fern.alling@thegazette.com or call 319-398-8331 before Wednesday, August 26.

Can anyhone help with an Android phone? Asking for a friend

I went to a local shop to get my hair cut today. The lady who was cutting hair next to where I was getting my hair cut was telling her customer about her cell phone woes.

Without boring everyone, is there anyone here who would want to help a lady with her Android cell phone woes?

I got in on the end of her story, but somehow HER photos (that she does NOT want to lose) have ended up on her mother's Android phone, and her (elderly) mother is locked out of her phone. Basically, her mother has forgotten what her password is to her phone. Her mother has it set to a WORD. (I'm used to iPhones where you use 4 or 6 numbers as a passcode, not a word.)

I suggested a few things, but I was of NO help once I found out that her (elderly) mother seems to not be able to remember what her password is on her phone.

If anyone has any suggestions, or can help, please feel free to DM me. The lady lives here in Cedar Rapids, so I'm sure the phone is also here in Cedar Rapids.

Seeking Roommate Starting by Sept. 15, Willing to Give Discount for Cat Care

I am going on tour for several months and am looking for a roommate. I have a fully furnished 3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom House with a large backyard and in-unit laundry located in northeast Cedar Rapids. I will be touring from mid-September to the end of November and January-May. I Willing to give a discount on rent to account for taking care of the cats. Utilities are negotiable. Currently seeking $1000-1200 on rent (not including cat care discount)

My Ideal roommate is someone who:

  • Cares about sustainability and gardening
  • Likes cats
  • Looking for a 9-12 month lease (open to longer depending on how well we work as roommates)

This could be a great deal for someone new to the area or someone looking for good housing at a cheap price. I won't be in town for most of the year so you will mostly have the place to yourself.

Please respond to this posting for more information and pictures.

Dumb website design

Hey CR, could you please not hide the X on your pop-up underneath the accessibility button so that it's nearly impossible to close the pop-up? No I don't want to be forced to sign up for your stupid newsletter.
