Gratitude for the city and people

Hi, I’m a tourist visiting here, and I just wanted to say thank you. You guys are truly wonderful. Watching the Fourth of July fireworks was a magical experience I’ll never forget.

Charleston is full of kind-hearted people. Everywhere I went, someone greeted me, offered help, or simply smiled. A special thanks to the people who randomly complimented my mom and me, it was such a small gesture, yet it meant so much. Where I come from, that kind of kindness is rare.

Your traffic sense, clean streets, and how organized everything feels made my visit even more memorable. Thank you, Charleston, West Virginia, for making me feel so welcome.

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

When You Hear Country Roads

I can't help but be inspired by this. In perfect harmony, the crowd sings Take me home, Country Roads, a testament to the power of unity.

Long Running Trails/Paths?

Looking if anyone has any good suggestions for LONG running trails or paths? Ideally in the 10-15 mile range. Either packed dirt or gravel. Would love it to be flat but I’ll choose my battles 😂. All the ones I’ve found from googling are short or seem to be more geared towards hiking :\ I frequent Kanawha blvd but seems like it’s only a little over 5 miles and it’s also lacking in the shade department

Willing to drive up to 30 mins away!

Is the Capital Market Doing the Community Good as a Nonprofit?

I recently saw their "Fresh Tomato Society" donation tier where for $600 a year you can get a free shirt and some artwork, which made me realize that the Capital Market is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Are they actually helping the community as a nonprofit? I don't see how what they do is different from a regular business that rents out spaces to vendors. Am I missing something?

To be clear, I love going to the Capital Market. I love that it's an area to hang out in Charleston. I am just curious about how they help the community as a nonprofit.

Regatta parking?

This is the first year I’ll be going to the regatta, planning on Friday night, and was hoping to park downtown instead of try to take the shuttles. Does anyone have advice for best places to shoot for? I was thinking the park place garage might be less crowded but I have no idea.

Conference in July

Hi all! I am coming to Charleston for a conference 7/20-7/24. I am looking for recs to spend my time after the conference, like places to eat, etc. I won’t have time to go to New River Gorge (unfortunately), but just looking for things to do around the city and places to eat! I’ll be staying at the Marriott in the town center and will not have a car (but will uber wherever).

I like trying new and unique foods (generally any food that’s delicious), breweries/beer, anything paranormal, hiking/walks, cute and cozy coffee shops, LGBT+ things, etc.

I look forward to being in your city! I actually passed through once a long time ago and it was very pretty!

TIA!

Hoping someone can spare some insulin

I just used the last of my insulin and currently don't have the $59 / need for the next vial. This condition is a 24/7 ride and yeah, some days are harder than others.

If anyone is in/near Charleston and in a position to help, even a little, l'd be so grateful. Dm open

Things no one is talking about?

Hi,

I'm a reporter moving from upstate NY who just got a job with the Charleston Gazette-Mail, and am looking for some issues to tackle in an investigative, enterprise journalism way. Since I'm not in the area yet, I cant use my normal ways of finding stories and don't want to rely on articles already written about these issues. I want to focus on what people think needs to be talked about, and what people want to read.

So, citizens of Charleston, I ask you: What is an issue everyone is ignoring/barely talking about, that you want some light shed on?

Edit: My DMs are open, if you feel safer there. I promise any conversation we have will be confidential, off the record, and background until you say you want to go on the record. I cant guarantee anything you say will be published, but i can guarantee I will heavily research anything you send me, and if I pick up the pitch, you'll be someone I come to to discuss it.

Edit: Thank you all so much for all of the suggestions! Due to the volume of comments and DMs and the extent of research id like to give each tip, I may be delayed in answering you, but please keep sending your suggestions. I'm reading each one and each one is incredibly important.

Sliding scale/affordable dentist for extraction?

My boyfriend has two teeth that need pulled and only has Medicaid. Health Right can't get him in for several months to see a dentist, does anyone have any recommendations for a place to get them pulled without paying a million dollars?

Influx of bad drivers

I was stuck in the traffic from the bad truck accident and unfortunately got a glimpse of the deceased. I’m scared of being burned alive so that wasn’t too great on me.

Today, I was on 64 split going to beckley just before the concrete barrier. Man was in the left lane heading to clarksburg. I guess he wanted to merge but didn’t have a blinker on the entire time, had he did use it I would have absolutely hit the brakes and allowed him over. He saw I was behind him, and beside him. Semi in front of me, car’s length. I’m going like 57/62. He looked me in the eye and swerved. I had to dodge. There was another truck beside me. People often fall over the bridge and die there. I even said to myself, “man I need to be way more mindful of keeping far distances just in case” today before I left my house.

This man sped up. I got his license plate and called the non emergency line anyway. But I am rattled already and threw up a few times from the fear.

What the hell is happening here? I feel like this past year, we have had a huge increase of crazy drivers. I’m not talking just about reckless speeding but I’m talking like the MOST dangerous and careless moves on the road to harm themselves and the people around them. I have been almost hit several times in the last month, semis merging with no blinker, people swerving between lanes, yesterday near Dunbar cold spot I saw a car drive in the grass to get around a car in front of them at the red light. That has been the LAST week.

Art class

Hi! I’d love to take a water color class, or really any art medium. Anyone know of a place? In the past, I did a couple weeks long drawing course with Uncork and Create. I’ve also done a couple one day classes with the Clay Center. However, I’m still a beginner.
Thanks in advance!

Edit: I have also taken classes at Echo-Lit, and the library. I was hoping for somewhere/someone who was doing more of a “4 week _____ class”.
