How's your Internet?

Hi there! Scroll down to skip the backstory, this is long-winded me trying to ask a simple question.

I am a 22 year old CS graduate currently living in a very expensive city on the East Coast. I have never visited Charleston, but have already learned a lot about it from reading other posts here and other sources on the web, and find myself considering a move. This would be for financial and career reasons: I may lose my job imminently, and thus be forced to move out of my current apartment later this summer. I have some workable savings ($15k), and have a plan to stretch this out a long ways while I improve my resume (online tutoring, freelance software development, and potentially YouTube). In order to do this, however, I need a place to land that is:

  1. As cheap as possible (particularly in regards to rent, which is by far my largest expense)
  2. Walkable or bikable to groceries and other stores
  3. Has a usable local bus network
  4. Connected to other parts of the country by adequate train or bus service
  5. Has reliable Internet to allow me to work remotely
  6. Has some limited dining / entertainment options (even if that just means public parks or something)

Charleston seems to check most of those boxes (to varying degrees, maybe, I don't know), and based on what I've seen I'd be happy to try living there for a year or two. Like I said, I've not been to Charleston, but I have visited Huntington a couple times, and I recall that being a surprisingly charming and attractive city. What I don't know about, however, is #5.

Can anybody here attest to the Internet speeds / reliability in the city? I get that Charleston is the largest city in the state, but it is also a very small one in a very isolated area, in a state that is notorious for its poor infrastructure. Do you guys have fiber yet? Is there anyone who has done remote work of any kind from Charleston that can confirm it's viable?

Hoping for some good info / advice. Thanks for reading and take care!

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

GLP-1 Providers

I’m looking for a GLP-1 provider within driving distance. Of course I’m going to ask my own GP about it, but I like to have options.

Thanks.

Dog Grooming

Does anyone have an good recommendations for reasonably priced dog grooming in the area? Even if it’s out of someone’s home, not necessarily a business. My dog groomer just recently moved out of the state and she had the best prices I know I wont be able to beat, but hoping someone around here has some recommendations. Thank you!

Weather Qs.

Hello!

I am on this subreddit in regards to weather related questions.

What is the weather like in the following months?

How trust worthy are locals to the weather app?

How accurate or how in accurate is the weather new or app?

What other state would someone compare the weather to?

If there is a place were I could see all this information that would be great too!

TYIA ❤️

Public places with lots of stairs

I'm looking for public places with lots of stairs to walk up and down as a form of exercise (read: kicking my ass half to death because stairs are hard). I know there are the bleachers at Laidley Field, but I don't know if that's open to the public. And I almost ate shit enough times running bleachers for high school sports to be wary of them if I have other options.

Totally willing to drive a ways out (think Hurricane or St. Albans but not as far as, say, Huntington). Thanks in advance for anyone humoring my odd request!

Book club

Hi! I have a book club that’s around 10-11 people per meeting. We meet once a month. Other than Taylor books, what other locations could hold this amount of people? We’d love for food and drinks to be available.

Thanks!

Surrogacy in WV/NC

Hi, I just want to explore the surrogacy options and outcomes. We have 3 PGT-normal embryos - 5AB, 5BB, and 6AA at Carolina Fertility Institute in North Carolina. I want to see how this process works, including costs, loan options, timelines, and any input from IPs and surrogates who might be willing to share the experience. Thanks a lot.

I sure hope this is paint… (corner of Greenbrier and Washington)

When can we vote Amy out again? I’m so tired of the only areas in Charleston getting any attention from “our” mayor being Downtown and South hills. Amy baby has got to go, she doesn’t give a damn about the east end or the west side whatsoever.

According to this chart, West Virginia is the only state where solitary learning is most popular (based on Google searches). Theories on why?

2026 West Virginia elections — US Senate + 2 House races

A few years ago I tried to research my own congressional candidates and the info was a mess -- scattered across a dozen sites, half of them outdated. So I built what I wished existed, and the 2026 West Virginia pages are now live: WV's US Senate race and 2 US House elections:

WV US Senate: https://www.localcandidates.org/elections/2026-us-senate-wv
WV US House (D1): https://www.localcandidates.org/elections/2026-us-house-of-representatives-wv-1
WV US House (D2): https://www.localcandidates.org/elections/2026-us-house-of-representatives-wv-2

You can compare candidates, their positions, fundraising, and backgrounds without bouncing between a dozen tabs. Free, non-partisan, no ads, no signup.

Built and maintained solo. Would genuinely love feedback -- what's missing, what's confusing, what would make it more useful. Happy to take questions or hear about bugs in the comments.

Places to go

Hi! I’m bringing my BFF to Charleston for a night of fun next weekend (5/16) for her birthday. I used to live in Charleston and there was a bar called Griff’s where you could sit out on the deck and enjoy drinks and food. I see that this place has closed now, but I was wondering if there were any similar places or where the locals would recommend for dinner/drinks and a relaxed atmosphere?

We were also hoping to possibly go to a drag show or find some other fun, so any suggestions welcome! thanks!
