Anyone ever hit this much RAM usage?

Currently running a SymPy script to calculate some insanely complex equations (that I can’t do by hand) for research. I kept crashing this PC (that has 96GB of RAM) by maxing out the virtual memory (330ish GB) every time the script ran.
I eventually manually raised the pagefile maximum size to 3TB split evenly (1.5TB) across two partitions on a 8TB SSD and got it to not fail. It has currently stabilized at ~1.3TB of committed virtual memory with a ~1TB pagefile on just one of the two partitions (increased since taking WizTree photo).

Just curious if anyone else has ever reached such extreme RAM usage before?

*Sorry for not using screenshots like a sensible person, I just don’t feel likely trying to copy them across to my phone to post this.

UPDATE (8/18): It’s the next day now and it looks like the calculation has gotten over this little RAM hump and calmed down to a much more reasonable ~30GB in use (~20GB belonging specifically to the SymPy script).

UPDATE #2 (8/18): RAM usage is actually steadily climbing upward, currently at 65GB. Maybe it’ll find its way back to 1TB+ eventually.

UPDATE #3 (8/18): Up to 150GB now. I’m curious to see if it will have gone up more by the time I check tomorrow or if it’ll collapse back down again.

How do I safely move my computer?

Hi I'm moving into my college dorm this upcoming Monday, and it's a roughly 2 and a half hour drive to the campus. I know I need to remove my graphics card but what else do I need to do to make sure nothing gets damaged? I'm considering removing my ram with it being a ddr5 build and I do not have the money to replace the ram if it gets damaged.

Thank you!

Im fixing my dads computer to use it as my own, i sure wonder what the problem is 🥹

Like the title says, im fixing my dad's old computer to use it in my room, i immediately found out how much dust it had on it, so that's probably the reason it doesn't work anyways. Im not thre best at taking pictures but u can see the dust 🥹✌️i jst thought this was funny, i'll be getting the dust off soon tho (also i can't edit the title but i realized that its kinda just removing a bunch of dust since that was the issue, sorry about that :p)

PC randomly refuses to power on at home, but works perfectly at multiple repair shops. What could cause this?

My PC has a very strange intermittent power issue and I'm completely stuck.

Specs:

i5-12400F

Gigabyte B760M H motherboard

RTX 3050 6GB

16GB DDR5

500W ANT esports PSU

The problem is that when I press the PC power button and absolutely nothing happens. No fans, no motherboard lights, nothing.

The weird part is that I've taken the PC/motherboard to a Gigabyte service center three separate times, and the motherboard works perfectly every time they test it.

I've also taken the entire assembled PC to three different third-party technicians, and it worked normally for them as well.

But when I bring it home, the problem comes back.

I've tested multiple power sockets and even tested it in a different house/floor, so I'm not convinced it's simply one bad socket.

The shocking stuff is that this is happening when I just got into an internship(WFH) so its frustrating for me. But still gotta work on my home laptop which is so shit, can't even run minecraft on 60fps

Please help me identify whether part of a plug got jammed in this usb port or it's the port itself that is dented :(

Hey, so, uhmm... A while ago I got a cheap computer mouse with a usb cable. I stuck it in, then I tried to pull it out and a part of the plug got stuck inside the port. Or at least that was what I thought. At this point I'm not sure of anything, maybe the plug was "naked" like this from the start and I just confused it with a different one.

So me, being an idiot, I took pliers and tried to remove the "stuck" part. But it was so difficult that I actually started wondering whether I'm maybe just pulling at a part of the port itself, destrying it in the process...I know, I'm an IT nightmare.

And I got terrified, stopped touching it and decided it's a problem for another day. It's been months ago, I don't even know where the stupid mouse went so I can't even show you the plug, but here we are. At least now I have strength to admit to my oan wrongdoings.

I know, i'm stupid af but please, I need to know so that I can proceed somehow and either save money for a quiet repair, try to do something myself or actually admit to my work's IT staff that i'm dumb. Not a fan of the last option tbh :")

If that helps it's a brand new Lenovo Notebook LOQ 15IRX10

I don't know shit about computers. Why are the fans raging at me 🙂

I'm completely unsure what context to give, but this computer is around 3 years old. It sat and continues to sit on my desk for month collecting dust; I barely use it at all. Even when I'm not running any apps it does this.

Teacher looking for advice

Hello all,

I am a teacher looking for a mobile device I can use to make resources that I plan to sell on Teachers Pay Teachers.

Because school boards own whatever a teacher makes using any board resources - from tech to apps to internet - I cannot use my work laptop, even if I make the resources at home.

I already have a gaming desktop and a Samsung Galaxy S6 lite tablet from Teacher's college. The desktop is more than powerful enough but I get distracted while working on the resources and I'm tied to the room since it's a desk top. The tablet has 4GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 720G processor.

My tablet is not powerful enough to do what I need to do. I do a lot of research on Google and Canva (canva app sucks). I also love listening to music while I work. It's constantly lagging and the apps crash a lot. It worked completely fine otherwise - I.e. doing the same tasks perfectly as what it did during Teacher's College.

I need something with a USB port, and I would like to have a touch screen on the new mobile device as I find that helpful. I would rather not have a full laptop though, as they are $1300 to over $2000 in my area.

I'm looking at the 2 in 1 or Chromebook thingy.

Suggestions?

Heat issues on my 3year old computer

Picture of my ICUE meters

Pardon my hazardous english, I am not a native english speaker.
Hello, I got a computer 3-4 years ago and today I noticed that my computer was doing some crazy fan sound like going 3000rpm and when I checked the temperature, they were all at 100°C (212F).
What is surprising is that it happens when I'm launching stuff like games even thought they are light consuming in term of resources.
That issue has appeared recently as it was quite silent previously and it is not the room temperature as I am using AC.
Do anyone has any idea of what could be causing this ?
Thanks in advance.

PS : I clean the dust every 3-4 months, it should be enough right ?

Dented corner

My backpack fell with my computer instead and its dented now can I fix it myself somehow or take it somewhere to get it fixed?

TO BUY: Asus or Apple Laptop

Hi. Need help choosing my next laptop.. The last two laptops I've had were MacBook Air. The one I currently have, I've had since 2016 and it is time for an upgrade since having issues with battery life, overheating, etc.

I have heard the Asus computer is good but want to hear from others. I do not go to school, I use the computer for shopping, browsing, researching things from my job, and also for a small cleaning business. I do use excel and word, but I also use google applications (sheets, drive photos). I do not game whatsoever. For what I will be using it for, should I stick to MacBook Air (or try the Pro) or get an Asus?

Thanks!

SSD makes the whole system freeze when under load - Help

Recently, whenever I have a steam game automatically update - or download and install, as soon as it gets to the installing part, my entire PC turns into a brick and is unresponsive for multiple minutes at a time. I can still move the mouse, and click things. But things will either not open, they wont load, or it will be essentially impossible to do anything.

I have a pretty high end system. I think god is punishing me for buying a cheap NVME. Its a Crucial P3 2TB. But surely this is not the issue? Surely this drive is not designed to literally freeze your entire system under load.

I do have windows installed on this drive, yes i understand i shouldnt put my steam games on my C drive.

Can someone help me through process of elimination determine if my SSD is faulty, or if its just genuinely a crap drive.

Steam installing a game - 800mb install - Took over 30 mins with 25 of the minutes frozen / unusable. It is also worth noting that it goes in chunks. It will be going at 80MB/s+ for a bit, then it will drop down to essentially 0, as you can see in the graph. Typically the system becomes unusable when the speed is near 0.

Syscall monitor

I would like to share my Linux Syscall Monitor project with you. It's a Linux process monitoring tool written in C that uses "ptrace" to observe system calls and generate behavioral reports.

Repo .

I welcome any feedback or criticism—whether it's about the code .
