Dental Sedation
Hello,
I am considering a graduate diploma in conscious sedation. Mostly I would be interested in working as a sedationist for other dentists, not necessarily sedating my own patients to work on. I know there are a few companies / dentists which offer this service, but I was wondering whether anyone has completed this course or has any insight into the dental sedation market. Thank you!
CSU dentistry student considering applying to USyd
Hi everyone,
I'm currently a dental student at Charles Sturt University from Canada, and I've been thinking about applying to the University of Sydney's DMD program.
I didn't apply to USyd previously because I hadn't completed my DAT until August, so I missed the timing for that application cycle. Now that I have it done, I'm wondering whether it would be worth applying this year.
Some of the pros I'm considering for USyd:
- Being based in Sydney, which may offer more networking and clinical exposure opportunities
- The reputation and broader recognition of the university
- Access to a larger city with a better social life
- I wouldn't lose any time because USyd is a 4 year program and CSU is 5 years
- A doctorate program instead of a bachelor's
- I'm from a large city in Canada, so living in Orange (where CSU is) hasn't been super convenient for me
- I think I have a good chance of acceptance, since I have a competitive DAT score and GPA according to the international students statistics
Some cons:
- Higher tuition and living costs in Sydney (I've also already bought a lot of materials/equipment at CSU that I most likely will not be allowed to use at USyd)
- Larger class size compared to CSU
- Leaving a program I have already started and settled into
- Uncertainty about whether the practical benefits would actually outweigh staying at CSU
- CSU has a clinical rotation year in 5th year, so I would be getting good clinical exposure
- I would have to contact my references again to apply to USyd, even though they all know I'm currently at CSU
For those who know both programs, is there a meaningful difference in training, opportunities, or career outcomes? Would applying to USyd be worth exploring, or is it generally better to stay where I am, once already enrolled in dentistry? I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has studied dentistry at CSU or USyd, or has an opinion on either school's programs.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

rnz.co.nzintraoral sensor
Okay I need to vent and get advice. Our intraoral sensor just died mid-day, again. This is the second one in 18 months. No drops, no spills, just stopped connecting. The warranty was 12 months so we’re eating the full replacement cost. I’m a new practice owner and these unexpected $7k hits are destroying my budget. I baby this equipment but it feels like they’re designed to fail right after warranty. Are all intraoral sensors this fragile and expensive to replace? I need something with a real warranty that covers more than manufacturing defects and won’t leave me stranded. What brands actually stand behind their gear?
current pre-dental student in Australia needing advice
Hey guys, I am currently studying Bachelor of Health Science at Griffith uni and I am in my first year, aiming to get into dentistry. I am doing an undergrad because I didn't do ATAR at school, I also did not do chemistry or math methods.
For some background information, I did one year of nursing last year and my GPA from that is 5.0.
Currently, my average grade in most of my classes are in the 80s (so HDs and Ds), except for chemistry where my average grade is 40.98%. I felt really discouraged about it and impulsively cancelled my UCAT exam because I thought that my GPA wouldn't be high enough to apply for dentistry. I am now regretting that decision as I have read a few things on a Facebook page about applying to dentistry in Australia and am now thinking that I could redeem my GPA.
As I am not doing the UCAT this year, I'm planning on applying to JCU and La Trobe uni as they do not require the UCAT and if I don't get in I will either continue doing health sci next year or transfer into biomed, do the UCAT and then apply for the 2028 intake.
I was just wondering though, what realistically are my chances of getting in? Because I didn't do math methods or chemistry in high school do I need to do a bridging course for those subjects even though I am doing a bachelors degree? I don't have any experience with dentistry, I haven't shadowed any dentists, I haven't really done any extracurriculars and I am not rural or Indigenous. I also don't have anyone around me that can help me with this stuff as I am one of the first one's in my family to go to university.
If there is anything I should/can do to strengthen my application, please let me know! pursuing dentistry has been a passion of mine since I was little and I will do anything to get in.
Thank you guys so much for taking the time to read this and I'm sorry this was a pretty long post. If I need to provide any other info let me know!
