KLX 230 high idle - manual throttle adjustment?

Just picked up a 2023 KLX230R and I’m trying to figure out if what I’m experiencing is normal EFI behavior or something I should address. The bike tends to idle really high sometimes, and when going downhill or off throttle it almost feels like the RPM hangs or even picks up speed instead of giving consistent engine braking. It can get a little sketchy coming into turns or technical sections because it feels like the bike wants to keep pulling.

I’ve checked a few basics already and I’m still learning these newer EFI bikes. I’ve been seeing a lot of people recommend the HiVolt/manual idle adjustment screw conversion for the KLX230 and was wondering if anyone here has experience with it. Did it actually help the hanging/high idle issue? Any downsides or bad experiences? Anything I should know before installing one?

Also open to any other recommendations or things I should check first before ordering one. Appreciate any advice from other KLX230 owners.

New to riding - Gear, Maintenance, and Beginner Advice?

Just picked up a used 2023 KLX230R with around 30–50 hours on it. I rode years ago as young kid but I’m basically getting back into riding and trying to learn everything I need to ride and what I should know about these bikes.

Also trying to figure out what riding gear I really need starting out. Right now looking into:

- helmet
- boots
- goggles
- gloves
- knee pads/braces
- riding pants/jersey

What gear is actually worth spending money on first, and what brands/models would you recommend for trail riding? Any advice for someone getting back into riding after a long break would be appreciated too.

Also more bike specific, so far I’ve already cleaned and re-oiled the air filter, and next thing planned is an oil change. Looking for advice from experienced KLX230 owners on:

- common maintenance items
- stuff to watch out for on the 2023 KLX230R specifically
- beginner mistakes to avoid
- mods actually worth doing
- things I should check after buying used

No title purchase advice

Looking for some advice on buying a dirt bike with no title. I live in Virginia and the bike is in North Carolina.

It’s a 2023 Kawasaki KLX230R (off-road/trail bike, not street legal). Seller says the original owner lost the title, but after running the VIN through a vehicle history site, it almost looks like a title may have never been issued at all and he sent pictures of vin and scan. No theft records, no accidents, no salvage/title brands came back.

Current seller says he bought it from an older fella that bought it for his kid. He seems pretty upfront and not sketchy, but I’ve always heard “no title = walk away,” so I’m trying to decide if this is actually a big deal on an off-road bike or not.

Price is $3500. Bike looks clean and seems mechanically solid from videos/pictures. Looking to knock some off since no title.

Main questions:

- Is it common for off-road bikes in NC to never have titles issued?
- How hard would this be to deal with later in VA?
- Would a detailed bill of sale be enough?
- Is this something you’d buy or just pass on and wait for a titled bike?

Just trying to avoid buying myself into a nightmare later on. Any advice appreciated.

My leg hurts with Leatt knee guard

Hey guys, I am very new to dirt biking. I bought these Leatt Dual Axis knee/shin guards, but when I fall even a little bit (just trying at home), my knee still hurts. Is that normal, or is it because of the position of the guard on my leg?

Top end been done wrong?

My son’s bike is 6 hours into a full top and bottom end rebuild, on Sunday he was on the track and he heard a loud crackle and the bike but out but never locked up. Took out the spark plug and noticed the bottom electrode had snapped off hence the bike cutting out. Tried and new spark plug but wouldn’t start.

Upon doing and compression test it didn’t lift the needle a slight bit I thought the piston/rings may be damaged from the small piece of metal that broke off the plug. I’ve noticed this ring on top of the piston clearly where it’s been hitting the head insert…am I to assume the mechanic has NOT set the squish correctly hence the piston eventually wearing and hitting the spark plug and snapping it which has the cause damage to the side of the piston and snapped the ring!

I’ve asked the mechanic and all I got back from him was “no idea” wasn’t that unfriendly when he wanted the custom and £800 to carry out the work.

Need gloves

I need new motorcycle gloves. I know they’re not meant to last forever, but I’d really like to get a pair that will last a long time (or are at least repairable with some needle work?). I do a lot of trail riding in Florida, so preferably not too hot. I’ve had the KLIM Mojave gloves recommend to me. Thoughts on these gloves anyone?

Also, are there any gloves that offer a little padding for the pads of your fingers? Not too much, I still want to be connected to the bike, but just enough to help with the blisters? lol

Need help

Do you think you can solve what’s wrong with this motorcycle based on this description

Hey guys, i've got a 2017 Beta 350 Race edition that i've had the pleasure of owning 7 years now. Nearly 9,000 miles and 400 hours of incredible memories and experiences riding Moab, Idaho, Tennessee, West Virginia, Michigan ice, enduro and countless out of state dual sport trips.

It has developed a hanging high idle issue after rolling off the throttle when in gear the past few years that begins to occur after riding for ~30 or so minutes. Makes it really difficult to ride technical single track when you lose your engine braking ability... Never happens when the motors cold. I'm on my 3rd throttle body, first 2 had the butterfly valve wear into the housing and created a gap for excess air to pass through even when fully closed.

I've checked intake boots for leaks, etc.. without any potential root cause identified. I'd like to keep the bike as a backup dual sport but need to get this issue sorted, have not had any luck to date. Trying to avoid throwing parts at it, any ideas/suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance!

I’ve been researching options for my first adult dirt bike and I’m trying to figure out what actually works well for someone completely new to riding. Most of the advice online seems split between people recommending smaller beginner bikes and others saying you should start bigger so you do not outgrow it too quickly. Since I do not have much riding experience yet, I’m trying to focus more on control, comfort, and reliability than outright speed or performance. My riding would mostly be simple trail riding, dirt roads, and casual weekend riding rather than motocross tracks or jumping. I want something that feels manageable to learn on but still capable enough that I would not immediately want to replace it after a few months. I’m also hoping to avoid buying something that turns into a constant maintenance project because I’m still learning basic mechanical stuff myself. I even spent some time comparing different setups and parts online. Including a few eBay, Alibaba and Facebook marketplace listings, jus to understand what styles and engine sizes are most common for entry level bikes. That helped a little, but it also made the choices feel more confusing because there are so many opinions on what beginners should start with. For riders who started later as beginners, what bike ended up being the easiest and most confidence inspiring to learn on?
