How to handwash vintage wedding dress?

Hi all,

I bought this wedding dress for $75 at a vintage shop. The seller said it is from the 70s but if anyone disagrees please say so! I’d love to know more about it.

I have a dress fitting tomorrow and need to clean it beforehand. I went to the local dry cleaners yesterday, but the two nice women there said with how much I would be charged to have it cleaned (at least $200) and the fact that they can’t guarantee it won’t be ruined, they recommended I clean it at home in my bathtub and hang it to dry.

I really don’t know what the fabric is. It feels silky but I don’t think it’s silk. I’m clearly not very familiar with vintage fabrics or fabrics in general.

Any recommendations for a specific soap or cleaner to use? Temperature of water? Hang to dry in the sun or indoors? Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Can dry cleaning fix this

I got this shirt online used and didn't realize there were stains on it. I thought I could fix it myself with a paste of baking soda, soap and a splash of hydrogen peroxide. Now after rinsing it looks weirdly blotchy, not even in the places I applied the paste. Not sure if there's any hope for fixing it. Material is wool. I would be open to dying or bleaching as well if anyone has alternative ideas. Thanks!

Dry Cleaners: What’s the Most Frustrating Part of Your Daily Operations?

Over the years I've been operating my own laundry business and I have to say that there are just so many issues that only someone in this industry understands.

Some of the issues that are quite common for us include:

Clients' insistence on same-day delivery for everything

The ability to manage staff members' responsibility and training process

Delaying clothes due to machines malfunctioning

Dealing with challenging clients when it comes to stain removal

Proper tracking of orders on a busy day

Increasing costs of chemicals, electricity, and labor

Comparison with huge online laundry platforms among local clients

WhatsApp calling or messaging for order updates

Scaling up the business without losing quality

And what I realized is that every single laundry business faces all those problems but not even talks about them.

Thus, I would like to ask other dry cleaners or laundry business owners:

What issues do you face daily in your laundry business?

What consumes your time the most, causes most stress and impacts your profits?

Los Angeles Dry Cleaners

Hi! Looking for a dry cleaner for my vintage wedding dress, it’s silk & has lace appliqué and pearl beading on the front. Need to take out some yellowing and press it to wear on my wedding day! Just need someone I can trust to handle the fabric and detailing with proper care and has experience. Looking for somewhere in Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Fernando Valley, or really anywhere within LA, OC, or IE counties. Thanks!

Turquoise tour shirt print broken after cleaning it

I wanna spread awareness about something that happened to my shirt after it got washed. I just noticed that the print on my shirt was a bit gone on junhan , gunil and jungsu. I've seen the information on the inside of the shirt about how to wash it and my dad did this:

. washed it with other dark clothes

. 30°c (not too hot, not too cold)

. dried hanging inside (naturally dried)

. no fabric softener

. 1200 rpm centrifuge

im really upset about it and my parents didn't expect it too happen and it's pretty weird that it happend

( bought at the Paris show)

Cleaning base tanks

My firbimatic machine has 3 base tanks. I just cleaned tank 3... it was filthy. There was a small amount of solvent left at the bottom. It made cleaning really annoying.

I am about to clean tank 2, and looking in the glass, I see it has even more solvent in the bottom. Not enough that it would come flowing out when I open the glass, but more than I want to mop up with rags and sponges.

However, I am afraid of pumping that remaining solvent to the still, because it is mixed in with all of that sludge stuff that I just pulled out of tank 3. Is this a valid concern? Should I just pump it as dry as possible? Will the still be able to handle some sludge? I plan to clean the still after all 3 tanks are cleaned.

Dry Cleaning costs

I brought in to my neighborhood dry cleaners 15 items recently and when I went to pick the clothes up, I was astounded the cost was $150. It's been awhile since I've used a dry cleaners, and yes, everything is more expensive, but what do you think of these prices: pants $12, jacket $15, button down shirts $7.50 and sweaters $11. Are these numbers in line with what you pay?

HELP

I recently bought this shawl and I'm in love with it. However, I thrifted it and I wash all clothes I thrift as soon as I get home. The care tag is impossible to find and I didn't find it until after I had washed it and spent over an hour untangling the tassels. I'm really scared that I ruined it, the tassels specifically. The shawl took a little damage on it but nothing crazy. How can I fix the tassels?

I turned it inside out and washed on a gentle cycle, in a mesh laundry bag with gain detergent, cold water.

Ruined fur

I had a fur blanket that I dropped off to a cleaners that advertised that they cleaned furs. After picking up my blanket, it was clear the pelt was ruined. The blanket was purchased 10+ years ago for roughly $3k, but the cleaners is only offering me $400 as compensation. Is this in line with industry standard?

Fabric Softer, Rinse, or Neither - which should I use in my laundry if any?

I'm curating my laundry every week routine and I need help. I have a detergent and dryer sheets locked down, but I need help for that goes into the little tray: should I use a fabric softener, a rinse, or neither?

What likely caused this damage?

I took my nearly new (and expensive) wool suit to a cleaner and discovered this damage after pickup. The cleaner immediately said it was moth damage, but I find it odd that I did not notice it when dropping it off, there is no other damage, and the suit is stored in a bag whenever not in use. Is this definitely (or most likely) moth damage or is it possible it was damaged during the cleaning process.

Question for fellow dry cleaners

Doing a deep clean on machines, pipes and other various equipment. Does anyone have recommendations for cleaning off built up dust that has been practically cemented by spray starch? Not sure if a rubbing alcohol mix would be best course of action. Trying not to use too much liquid, dusters and vacuum cannot lift sufficiently.

Need advice: dry cleaner stained my wedding dress, do I trust them to try and fix it?

I brought my wedding dress to my local dry cleaner to be cleaned and preserved (in retrospect should definitely have gone to a specialist).

It came back with these chemical stains where they’d clearly tried to clean the grass and mud stains. They told me it’s a cleaning agent that hadn’t been rinsed properly and that they will try and get it off.

Is this an easy/common mistake I can trust them to fix? Or did they really mess up and should I force them to refund me and pay for damages?

The last thing I want is them making the stain worse.

The dress is made of Polyester Mikado.

How should I go about cleaning this ribbing?

It’s %100 polyester, I was going to use dish soap and potentially a soft brush but I’m afraid I’ll fray the material… what do you guys recommend?

I just picked up my scarf from the dry cleaners. The two stains are still present and there are these "shadow stains" that weren't there before. What to do?

First photo is today. Second photo is what I handed in
