Buyer wants to return watch as 'faulty' or get £700 refund

I recently sold a very expensive watch through eBay. It went through authentication and then arrived at the buyers address. Within a few hours of it arriving he had sent a picture of a "gap" in the watch - between two moving parts. This gap was clearly pictured in the ad, and is only visible when the moving part (the reversing watch face) is moved.

He is demanding it is faulty despite photos clearly displaying what he is determined is a fault, but it's just a part of the watch.

I already gave him a £700 discount when buying the watch as we negotiated a deal through the offers system. He is now asking for me to send him another £700 so he can get this "non fault" repaired. I have refused.

He has now opened a case.

Unsure what to do - I gathered that eBay authentication also checks for faults so I should be covered on that front? But apparently the whole system is very unpredictable and can really rule in anyones favour?

It's not faulty. And what he is describing as a fault is clearly pictured and is just a part of the watch. Is it worth just refunding him? Or should I hold out?

Photo with the arrows is his, photos without is a screenshot of one of the many original pictures i took on the advert.

Received an email saying the case is now on hold "We have placed the case on hold to allow additional time for us to review the entire case. No additional action is needed from you at this time."

I'm very worried

Many thanks in advance

I need advice from full time sellers

I’m currently selling on ebay, poshmark, mercari, and facebook marketplace full time. I buy storage units and flip the contents inside as well as flipping items from yard sales and estate sales. I’ve been doing this since January and it’s been very fun & I love it but there are obviously highs and lows.. I haven’t even thought about taxes yet. I’ve made about $5,000 net since starting and I know I haven’t been doing it long but I just feel so discouraged.

I just started a youtube channel and that gives me a little hope that I can actually scale this the way I imagine. I guess my main question to everyone is, do you think this is something that can become an actual career or pay the bills one day?

I talked to a very wealthy colleague of mine and he says he doesn’t honestly see the marketplace being a scalable business but doubling down on content and youtube can definitely be the best scaled thing I can do and become “successful” from it.

Delivery Attempted No Response From Buyer

Hi, I’m new to selling on eBay and not sure if I should do anything about this or wait for the buyer to respond. I shipped on time but tracking says delivery attempted on May 15 and asks for buyer to schedule redelivery, but no response from buyer and it looks like it will be returned if the buyer doesn’t respond.

I’ve noticed recently that autopay seems to happen randomly, and it happened with this auction. The buyer messaged me saying he didn’t like autopay and wouldn’t be buying from me again. I told him I had no control over autopay, but encouraged him to reach out to ebay and share his concerns. He didn’t ask for a refund and I shipped the item. Now he’s not responding to my messages about the item’s delivery. Should I just call this a loss and refund him? The plant will be dead by the time it’s returned to me, since I’m in Florida and it was shipped to Colorado. It’s starting to look like he is intentionally avoiding the delivery. And I had nothing to do with autopay.

When can I expect my payout to go back to normal

Ive been selling on eBay full time since 2019 and got this email April 20th last month and my funds have been getting released three days after delivery instead of two days after the buyer pays. I am assuming this was due to higher than usual sales during my previous month. It has been about 30 days of this payment hold and I’m wondering if anyone knows how long eBay tends to keep this payment hold on accounts. I ship pretty much every day and I get all of my labels from eBay and every time I contact customer support they can’t give me a timeline on when I can expect my payout schedule to go back to 2 days after the buyer pays.

Why is my typing box in messages all squashed on desktop?

I tried clearing cookies and tried on Chrome and Brave. Both do this.... what the heck??

Update: It's been fixed.

Buyer claims that I sent the wrong item

I sold this guy a pair of XM4’s a few days ago. They were brand new but just taken out of the box. They arrived to his address yesterday, but this morning I woke up to him requesting a return. He claims that I didn’t send him the Sony XM4’s but instead he said I sent him some random pair of Bose headphones. Where do I go from here. I actually sent him the Sony headphones. I’m worried that when he returns my items, it won’t actually be my headphones, but this random pair the he has. What do I do?

EDIT: He just messaged me back and said that he mixed up the box with another one, and he did receive my headphones that I sent. Thank you guys for the help though👍

Buyer opened Return Request with AI photo

Hi all, I sold a router a week ago and item was delivered a couple hrs ago based on USPS Tracking. Buyer opened an Item Damaged request shortly thereafter with this as the pic. I did accept the return and provided a label, and now going to wait the up to 21 days for them to ship the item back. Is there any way I can get this return request thrown out solely based on the image they provided, which is clearly AI?

Buyer failed to get item from customs. Wants higher refund cause item is now $$$

UPDATE: Reached out support and this was their reply! I plan to refund the guy if/after I get my card back less fees. Left a comment below with a screenshot of supports response as well.

Thanks to everyone for the responses and advice! Hope this helps anyone in a similar situation in the future. BTW, the ebayforsellers Instagram is legit, a live human will respond quickly from my two experiences with them (both because of this same guy haha)

Hi everyone,

Newish seller here. Sold an item on 4/14, arrived in the UK on 4/21. Item was being held at customs awaiting his payment. I messaged the buyer to check if he had received the item on 4/24. He replied back to me on 5/2 saying that he didn't receive it yet. After a lot of back and forth in which I tried everything I could to track the package and such and gave him instructions on what he needs to do on his end, it passed the timeframe from which he could retrieve his item (21 days) and it is now apparently on it's way back to me.

This item has now gone up in value since the time I sold it to him, and he is asking me to refund him the additional amount that it's gone up on top of what he paid so that he can get the same card again at the new higher value.

This guy did tell me he was autistic and even left me a negative feedback before receiving the card that was actually meant for another sell (I was able to confirm this with support and get it removed) so he's definitely not a normal customer.

My questions are:

  1. What am I actually obligated to do here based on ebay policy?
  2. What should my next steps be?
  3. Can he leave me negative feedback again after his original mistaken feedback was already removed?

If there's anything missing that I should know of, I'd greatly appreciate the info! Thank you in advance!

I am having some trouble with ad types

Hello friends, I have been selling on ebay for quite some time now but it was always casual. I have moved into trying to sell items more as a business and figured I should do some ads to help with that since the category is a bit oversaturated. I tried the general ad type first but didn't really see any success, so last night I changed it to priority at $3 daily limit (just to try it out and see first) and within about 8 hours or so it reached the max limit and is now not being promoted despite only getting 42 clicks and 2 watchers with no sales. The math of clicks and everything ads up but now I owe $12 for the ads and the item only gets me $5 in profit per sale so that's not really sustainable at the moment. I would appreciate any advice on what to do to be able to keep my listing in the promoted section while not going in debt for it lol

If they message before buying I'm blocking them!

Here I am again, stuck with a nonsense return from a buyer who asked "is this new" on an item listed as used. From this point forward if they message me at all before buying its an instant block!

This damage can’t be from “walking in light dew” right?!

I haven’t had a situation like this yet, sold some boots in really good condition. Buyer said they wore them 3 times but the third time there was some light dew on the grass. I don’t see how some light dew could chew these soles up like this.

Buyer is requesting “some kind of compensation”, which also is weird because if this genuinely happened like this then why wouldn’t the ask to return for a full refund? I want to be fair but this doesn’t add up to me.

Aggresive Buyer with an 8 day old account demanding refund

His account is only 8 days old.. very aggressive guy.. will i win this case? I dont want to refund him cause hes rude. Also genuinely concerned that ill lose the case cause the "box" in the title? Its literally four boxes I sold him and the description never says anything about each box containing 12 packs or anything.. we are talking about a $450 difference in product. I dont mind refunding but also dont wanna lose money on shipping label.. again its also not worth the bad review... how can I go about this situation? Its my first time selling magic cards.. I was gonna get into it but I backed out and decided to make a little extra cash instead.. but now im regretting it. Lol

Clothing sellers, how are you doing?

I was doing great last year but this year seems to be completely dead for me. I know I am listing way less but my quality of items is much higher. I've been mostly listing golf and golf adjacent brands Greyson, Birddogs, Redvanly, Vineyard Vines, FootJoy, and of course Peter Millar. Alongside them I also list brands like Barbour, Faherty, Tommy Bahama, Johnnie-O, Bonobos, Lululemon, and Ralph Lauren. I get that the greater economy isn't doing too hot but surely these upper middle class buyers I'm targeting are doing fine. Have trends changed? Am I being "punished" by eBay for no longer listing and selling 50 items a week? How are you guys doing? Let me know!

Has the quality of eBay buyers dropped recently?

Realizing there are many different product categories which come with their buyer demographic, I’m asking in general if the quality of buyers on the platform has dropped.

As an example I used to get mostly honest buyers that knew what they wanted and came to eBay to get it cheaper and were grateful when it met their expectations. Now it seems I’m having to worry more about indecisive or immoral buyers pulling some crap after they receive the item. They typically communicate very poorly, if at all, and aren’t willing to work to a solution. This tells me they’re just wanting something free, be it having the seller pay to return an item they never wanted to begin with or keep the item and try to get a refund.

I still get plenty of honest buyers and good transactions - the majority, but the scum seems to be rising these days and it creates a lot of uneasiness and more profit loss. For context I’m not selling in a high scam/shady buyer product category so I can only imagine what those sellers are experiencing.

Am I just having bad luck with buyers lately or is anyone else feeling this way.

eBay To Begin Hiding Non-Standard Size Apparel and Footwear Listings Starting in July. Be Sure To Update Your Listings Before Then!

eBay will begin hiding Apparel & Footwear listings beginning in July unless they conform to its size requirements. eBay informed developers of the change, calling it a Size Standardization.

Update: "Apparel & Footwear listings with non-standard, missing, or incomplete size information may be blocked or hidden starting July 2026. Normalization begins in June."

eBay said the size standardization for Apparel & Footwear listings on eBay was a step toward improving listing quality, buyer trust, and overall marketplace performance, and said the update would apply to listings created via APIs, File Exchange, and third-party tools. Presumably, eBay will require sellers who create their listings manually to also conform to the new standards.

"Starting from June 2026, eBay will begin automatically normalizing existing listings with high-confidence size values (e.g., "Small" → "S") and flagging low-confidence or invalid entries (e.g., "See description" or "N/A").

"Starting from July 2026, all new and existing listings with non-standard, missing size values, and/or condition values will be blocked from the site or placed on hold."

eBay said it would handle normalization of high-confidence values automatically, and flag low-confidence or invalid entries. "Starting from July 2026, all new and existing listings with non-standard, missing size values, and/or condition values will be blocked from the site or placed on hold."

Buyer threatening negative feedback over Israel shipping suspension. What to do?

So im relatively new to ebay selling and have been doing it full time for about 5 months now and just ran into one of my first major international shipping problems and wanted opinions on whether I handled this badly or not.

A buyer from Israel bought a pretty large item from me around 3 months ago and I shipped it out immediately through USPS Priority Mail Express International using shippo. About a week after I shipped it, USPS suspended shipments to Israel because of the conflict over there, but I didnt know that at the time. The tracking then got stuck for about 2 months saying “Processed Through USPS Facility” in Jamaica ny before eventually updating to “Returned to Sender.” I finally got the package back at my house in California on May 6. The tracking still to this day says "Returned to Sender in Jamaica, ny" btw and im in california .

During the entire process I stayed in communication with the buyer and once the package came back to me I offered him a full refund multiple times. The buyer kept declining the refund though and instead kept insisting that i resend it through FedEx.

The issue is fedex shipping for this item is extremely expensive, more than what the buyer originally paid, and im also still trying to get refunded by usps for the original shipping cost which was about $140. On top of that I honestly dont feel comfortable shipping to Israel again right now because I dont want the same issue happening again with another carrier.

I explained all this to the buyer and told him I understand why hes frustrated because after 3 months he still doesnt have the item, but at the same time I also feel like this situation wasnt really my fault since the shipment got caught in the middle of USPS suspending service to Israel. After that he started threatening negative feedback and saying stuff like hes going to get ebay involved and "ive waited for 3 months and got nothing! how would you feel if you were me!?" and i understand where hes coming from 100% but i dont think he understands where im coming from as the seller and doesnt understand that i didnt have control over the outcome of this situation. It was just bad timing. I really dont want negative feedback over this because i actually did everything i could and communicated through the entire process.

I guess my main question is where did I go wrong here as a seller? Should I have just refunded him immediately and fully ended the transaction once the package came back instead of trying to work with him on reshipping options? What would you guys do/have done?

eBay will reimburse sellers for Post-INR deliveries if an eBay label is used

I thought this was more common knowledge since the update occurred last year, so I wanted to help spread awareness since it looks like it’s not well known. I used to ship with PirateShip but have moved to eBay labels because of this change.

https://www.ebay.com/sellercenter/news/2025-september/inr-policy-updates

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-protections?id=4345 (Scroll down to ‘Other protections’ then click on ‘eBay Money Back Guarantee requests’ under ‘If a buyer reports that an item hasn't arrived’ it states ‘Additionally, we’ll protect you if you use an eBay label and the item is delivered to the buyer after you’ve issued a refund. We'll automatically reimburse you for the item, remove defects, and exclude the case from service metrics.

Is this the best course of action?

Just sold this graded card and I guess my eBay International program was off? Wondering if I should relist as BIN and let buyer buy again, or should I just figure out the shipping g and roll the dice? I’d prefer to keep it all through eBay.

How many cards do you ship ESE?

I am selling some cheaper lots, most are 2-6 cards. Getting asked to lower the price of shipping but I charge a flat rate $4.99 for USPS ground and cover the rest out of pocket. I know eBay has a trading card kit that can hold up to 24 cards and still ship ESE, but right now I’m using the same sturdier envelope as them but not the insert they customized. Do you go over 2 cards for an eBay Standard Envelope (ESE)? If you use or have used eBay Standard Envelope trading card kit to ship eBay Standard Envelope is it worth that ~$2 per kit cost to be able to ship eBay Standard Envelope?

Thanks for your help. Was shutting the store down, now have too much loose product to do so yet, so any advice so I can move the rest of my listings would be great!
