New to NYC and looking for neighborhood friends!

Hello there! I'm 27M who just moved to this neighborhood and brand new to NYC. Not sure if such posts are allowed in this sub so apologies in advance. I'm looking to make some new friends and hopefully get some recs for cool cafes/places to eat around here. I work in tech/research. As far as my hobbies go, I'm a very outdoorsy guy and always down for adventures. I love working out (currently trying CrossFit), biking and hikes, playing tennis (still a beginner), going for long walks, etc. I wanna do lots of long walks in the city and thinking to walk the entire broadway. I'm also thinking picnics in the central park while reading my book and visiting different museums. I love dancing (mainly bollywood) and have tried bachata a bit (took some lessons before). I also enjoy exploring new cafes, restaurants, bookstores (also an avid reader), and solo traveling. I'm pretty chill dude and never judge anyone. I believe we are all beautiful in unique ways. If you feel like we would have a lot of fun hanging out as friends, please reach out :)

Corner of 1st & 7th

For the last two and half years, I have avoided the corner of 1st & 7th. Which is hard, because I live so close by. I had been walking to get a gatorade from the store one morning in November 2023 and I passed by what I had initially assumed was a minor car accident or something. There were people screaming though and I obviously looked to see what was going on. I don’t even want to type it out.

Some days I can’t think about anything else. The visuals are so horrifically seared into my memory. I don’t know if there is anyone else in this subreddit who was as deeply affected by what happened there in November 2023 but I wanted to take a chance and reach out here if anyone was.

I’m sorry if this is not the right place to ask. Tonight has just been one of those nights where it is all I can think about.

Appetite in NYC for a Saturday philosophy salon?

thinking about starting a small monthly thing in the LES. want a reality check beforehand

format:

- 10-20 people,
- one philosophy or ethics question chosen by group vote 48 hrs before,
- structured debate for about 55 min,
- close by asking “did anyone change their mind.”

Thinking saturday nights, small gallery-style room, wine, $25 to keep it curated and cover the space. my worry is im romanticizing a format that doesnt have real appetite, and i get burned on the first few events…

1.) would you actually come to something like this? how often?

2.) what makes these events die? the ones ive been to felt performative, or one loud person ran the room.

3.) anything like this already exist in nyc i should know about?

….honest answers welcome, including “this sounds insufferable.” rather hear that now than after i book

looking for a specific pizza shop near east village/lower east side

around a year ago i went to visit my grandmother who lives in east village and she wanted pizza so my parents and i went out searching for the nice spot, looked one up on maps and chose this really distinctive spot. it was red and white striped all along the awnings and wall all the way down and they had some pizza themed gimmick name. iirc the names of each pizza were pizza pun themed. they had some not so conventional stuff too but i only remember bbq chicken, buffalo chicken, deep dish pepperoni cups, etc. and i also believe it was somewhere near E Houston St because i remember passing by El Churro which was also a very distinctive building. but it wasn’t so far from E 8th that the pizza would’ve gotten cold, it was still warm by the time we got home. oh and i believe it was also on the corner of the street

i really want to find this place as it’s my grandmas last few weeks in the country for a while and she loves pizza and specifically loved this spot so i want to get her something special before she leaves for a while.

Is something up with The Bean?

Sad to see their bigger location close, and today at their Broadway + 9th it looked half shut down: just one employee, empty cases, half the lights off, and they couldn’t toast the bagel I ordered. I hope they’re alright overall.

World Cup jerseys on the cheap?

Looking to buy a Mexico jersey to wear Sunday - would prefer not to leave the neighborhood in this heat. I don’t want to go to a regular sports store because I know it’ll be $$$. Has anyone seen vendors or stores selling team jerseys/t shirts for cheap? I don’t really care if it’s unauthorized or unofficial merchandise or whatever. I thought there might be street vendors in union square but I checked yesterday and only saw Knicks stuff.

Hello,

I am trying to host an engagement party and was looking for recommendations of bars with space for a private party of ~50 people. Not looking for anything super fancy but would prefer a nice space. Budget around 5-7k. I would probably want a open bar for a few hours but somewhere with a minimum spend can also work. budget of around 5-7k.If anyone has any recs or has had experience with something similar i would appreciate any advice!

Thanks so much!

Apartment cleaner recs

Hi all, I have a little studio (~400 sqft) and I'm looking to hire a cleaner for a one-off deep clean. Most of the services I've seen have rates for weekly or monthly cleaning, but for now I just need one session. Anyone have a cleaner they would recommend? Also, what should I expect to pay for a single session?

Salt & Pepper still looking for their forever home

Update on my last post: Salt and Pepper are in their new foster home in east village! But they have limited time here and are looking for their forever home.. Please share and message me if interested, can connect you with the rescuers! Thanks to all who shared and bumped their last post, truly don’t know how they haven’t been adopted yet.

1 year old angels, incredibly calm temperaments, affectionate with each other, affectionate with humans, and very adaptable!

This is their third home since they were found abandoned in a box outside a vet’s office in Brooklyn in February. They stayed for 3 weeks at the vet’s office, then stayed at my partner’s apartment in EV for 3 months until I moved back to NYC with our two cats, and now they have been in their new foster home (also in EV) for 2 weeks. They would be amazing first pets for anyone thinking about adopting. I truly wish we could have kept them, we love them so much and just want them to have a great permanent home.

Dog Attacked on Waverly & 6th

(Technically West Village, but posting here for more visibility.)
Today I took my 4 year old Shar-Pei mix to meet up with some friends near the Pride parade. Since many of the streets were blocked off, we walked down a quieter stretch near Waverly Pl. and 6th Ave., by the subway entrance across from Tashkent Supermarket.
As we walked past a white man (mid-30s, presumably homeless) sitting on the sidewalk with a large brown dog (around 70 lbs), the UNLEASHED dog suddenly lunged and attacked mine out of nowhere.
I immediately pulled my dog away and found a deep puncture wound on his chest. Panicked, I ran to a nearby officer to report that my dog was just attacked but I was told there wasn’t much they could do besides tell the owner to leash the dog.
Thankfully, my pup is okay after getting a stitch, and it could have been so much worse. Just wanted to give other dog owners a heads-up to be extra careful if you’re in the area. ❤️

Free couch on 5th St between Ave A and B

Seems to be a free couch that’s in decent shape on my street. Across from Sophie’s bar.

Emotionally disturbed woman on Avenue B seems to be getting worse

Not really sure what to do here but there’s a woman who’s been around forever but lately she’s gotten more upset and disturbed - hitting herself very hard in the face and screaming. Is there anything to do here? Concerned for her health.

Looking for soccer players! 18+ city-wide casual club – All skill levels welcome! ⚽

Hey neighbors!

A few of us are organizing a new 18+ soccer club, and we’re trying to get some local players from the neighborhood involved.

We are building this to be a city-wide community, hosting matches at fields across Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn to make it easy for everyone to catch a game regardless of where you are commuting from or hanging out that week.

The Details:

  • All Skill Levels Welcome: Whether you haven’t played since you were a kid, want to get a great cardio workout in, or are looking for a solid match, we have a spot for you. No pressure, just good vibes.
  • The Goal: To stay active, improve our game, and meet people from every corner of NYC.
  • Age: 18+ only.

To keep things community-first and respect the local subreddit rules, I'm not dropping external links or ads here.

If you’re down to play or want info on our upcoming games, drop a comment below or shoot me a DM! I'd love to get you connected to the group.
