Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Countries That Tax American Tech Companies. Will It Actually Work This Time?

Just as US-EU trade tensions seemed to be cooling, a new flashpoint has arrived.

Trump has threatened a 100% tariff on any country imposing a digital services tax on American companies, and made clear it would supersede any existing trade agreements. This comes less than two weeks after the EU approved a deal designed to cut tariffs on US goods.

The tactic has worked before. Canada repealed its 3% digital services tax after a similar ultimatum to keep trade negotiations alive.

But the EU is a different beast. France already has a DST in place and has previously said it won't bow to US pressure. Germany and Belgium are planning their own versions. The core disagreement, whether large American tech companies pay enough tax on European revenue, has been running for years with no resolution in sight.

For ecommerce sellers operating across borders, this isn't abstract. A 100% tariff on goods from major EU trading partners means higher sourcing costs, more expensive imports, and consumers on both sides paying more for everything.

A few things worth discussing:

Do you think EU countries will back down the way Canada did, or is this a different situation entirely? If these tariffs do go into effect, which product categories do you think get hit hardest?

Has anybody had a similar issue before?

To cut a long story short I’ve just sold one of my watches on eBay, since eBay brought in the authentication system I’ve sold maybe 4/5 watches, never had a problem always been authenticated no issues, always had positive feedback. Had a this account for more than a decade and I’m sat on 100% positive feedback.

This time, granted it’s pretty much double any previous sale, I’ve had nothing but issues. I used Malca Amit to ship the watch to ensure it was full insured whilst in transit. Previously I’ve used Royal Mail and Sercurus but switched after finding out Sercurus don’t actually insurance parcels to third parties.

Anyway Malca Amit picked up my parcel last Thursday (16/07), and from Friday (17/07) onwards it showed as delivered on Malca Amit and eBay’s tracking, but took ages to show as arrived at hub, little known to me the eBay hub had actually rejected the parcel on the Friday and subsequently the Monday (20/07) too, because they said the EVTN number wasn’t on the label (it was, and always was just written on there but in pen not on the label text). Because I didn’t know eBay hadn’t actually taken delivery of it I contacted their customer services and asked if it had been delivered and was told about it being rejected at around 12:30 on Monday. I then managed to sort out the EVTN issue and Malca Amit delivered the watch on the Tuesday (21/07), this was then authenticated and has since been received by the buyer who was really pleased and left really good feedback.

Then on Tuesday after the item was authenticated but before it was delivered I had two emails (in the attached images) one saying my account had been temporarily restricted and one saying my payouts had been paused. I think understandably, I’m quite pissed off that eBay are now holding my £16k for at least five business days. The only action I was given was to upload tracking for items sold in the last 30 days, that had already been done and I always upload tracking for both mine and the buyers peace of mind. So I replied directly to the email and let them know I had already provided the tracking number and always do.

I’ve called eBay numerous times and had numerous different answers I was told yesterday that my funds would be released between 24 and 48 hours, today I was told I had to reply to the message directly in the app and couldn’t reply by email (the email literally says reply by email and it’ll be received) and that I couldn’t possibly speak to the appeals team as their an ‘offline team’. Then finally I was told by somebody else that the appeals team would contact me by tomorrow at the latest, and that the funds would automatically be released to me after five business days, which makes you wonder what needs to be investigated if the funds get released after five days regardless. The last guy I spoke to tried to help but he just kept going round in circles and couldn’t really answer anything and I’m not massively hopeful I’ll get my payout on Tuesday.

Has anybody else had a similar experience? I’ve been told the tracking is no longer an issue as the buyer already has the item and has left positive feedback, but the funds have been held as it’s a spike in average selling price, again I completely get that and completely get anti money laundering checks or identity checks or whatever but I haven’t been asked to prove my ID or my original purchase for the watch or anything. From reading other users experiences I have a feeling my account is going to be permanently banned, for no reason, and I’m going to be sat waiting on a pretty substantial amount of money for up to 190 days. Really not impressed and it’s the last time I’ll be using eBay to sell anything remotely valuable.

Buyer opens payment dispute 3 months after delivery + positive feedback

UK) A buyer placed an order on the 10th April and it was delivered on the 15th. Once they received the order they had left positive feedback and didn’t contact me once.

Fast forward to today, they have opened a payment dispute with the finance institution claiming they “ haven’t received their item”

I still have the tracking information which shows proof of delivery and map of delivery location (being the buyers address)

This is clearly a fraudulent dispute and I hope the buyer faces consequences

Will I win the dispute if I provide all the evidence?

Not vinted but same vibes

Does anyone have experience rejecting a refund on eBay? Will it reflect badly? These were brand new, not even tried on as my son outgrew them (they were gifted) before getting a chance to wear them and the buyer has had them for a week. I feel like they've worn them on holiday or something and now want their money back. What would you advise?

Royal Mail have lost my parcel

I posted a parcel via Royal Mail simple delivery 2 weeks ago, and I’ve rung Royal Mail and they’ve said it’s lost. What should my next steps be? I’m covered by simple delivery, I have proof of postage & the item is worth £300-ish and is going to the US

We took care of returns for you?

4 photos for you to get through.

You see the sealed case.

Buyer has opened it and has sent a photo of a damaged pop.

Surely out of my hands in the first place right?

As for ebay. This was handed within about 5 mins of him opening a case, so he gets to keep item and his money back. Yes, I wont receive the item back, I wont lose money but I think thats besides the point here don't you? Am I wrong in thinking this just creates a whole level of fraud? So I could buy say a ps5 physical game, put a few creases on the cover and say its no good, would I then keep the item which works and get my money back? This must be turning sellers off. Im disgusted with it, I honestly feel for anyone whos lost money and the item.

Buyer is going to miss delivery - item will be returned to me - do I just lose £20 postage?

The buyer bought the item, I dispatched it straight away and told them when it would be delivered and that it would need a signature, they did not reply to me. They’ve missed delivery twice now. I’ve messaged them again to tell them they need to be in as this is the final delivery attempt. If they aren’t in, I assume my item will come back to me and I’ve lost the £20 as obviously they’ll want a refund. I shipped this privately through UPS. Frustrated as I don’t wanna lose this money but also the packaging will be probably quite beaten up after being back-and-forth so the item might be less easy to sell or I’ll have to reduce the price.

What happens now?

I’ve only sold a few things on eBay - this being my third. I’ve never had this so not sure what to do.

I sold a Jellycat on eBay, after trying on Facebook groups I thought eBay would be safer in the end.

It sold fairly quickly for £90.

Problem is they are now saying it was damaged in transit (the tag apparently got a crease).

However the person who bought mine is the husband of someone I was speaking to on Facebook. This person commented on another post she’d bought the jellycat for a significant amount cheaper than mine via another platform.

I have screenshots of them wanting to buy, iso posts which say they’re looking for it on the 14th, saying they’d found one on the 15th and mine sold on the 16th. I also have a screenshot of her profile tagged with his profile, this also shows she lives in the same area. It’s not hard to piece together what she’s doing.

However eBay have put the transaction on hold. I’ve also got this message (photo). I’ve not got the option to respond or do anything.

Do I wait it out? Do I ring eBay today? Do I stick to the facts that mine was perfect when I sent it? Will I still get my money?

Offers and Buyer Protection Fee

I've can't find an answer for this. If I as a seller make an offer does that include the Buyer Protection Fee or not?

As I buyer the offer does include the fee, but I've not been able to find the answer as a seller making the offer.

built a free 'do i owe tax?' checker for sellers

hey all, made a free little tool that might save someone here a headache.

i'm a compsci student who started selling bits on vinted and ebay to keep myself afloat through uni. last year i genuinely could not work out if i owed HMRC anything. everyone i asked said something different. the gov. uk pages are fine but long, and i just wanted a number.

so i built one. you type in what you've earned and what you've spent, and it tells you straight away whether you need to register for self assessment and roughly what to set aside. there's even a tickbox for "i'm just selling my own old stuff" because honestly, half the time the answer is you owe nothing at all. runs in the browser, no sign-up, nothing gets stored.

it's not tax advice, obviously — just the £1,000 trading allowance rules and current bands done properly. if anyone spots something wrong, tell me and i'll fix it. that's half the reason i'm posting.

Was sold a fake/replica item and looking for some advice please

Hi all, I bought an item of clothing and when it was delivered I could tell right away that it was a fake. I asked for a refund and the seller said no, so I opened a dispute and left it to ebay to settle and they found in my favour. Ive now been told to print a tracked returns label and send the item back. Now my concern is that due to the seller initially trying to scam me is there a chance that they lie/pretend that the return item wasnt sent or that I returned the wrong item etc? Has anyone had to return something in a similar situation and could they offer any advice?

Buyer wants refund 11 days after receiving item and my account has been banned

So a bit of context i have/had an Ebay account and last week received a ban for exploitation of the refund policy. Of the 7 things i've order only 1 items has actually been accepted by me and 1 is yet to arrive. On the face of it it looks bad and i've accepted the fact i wont get the account back.

But the items being refunded weren't actually my fault: 2 items were never posted and the sales cancelled by the seller, 2 items were fakes sold against Ebay T&C and returned at the request of the seller, 1 item had a damaged label and was returned to the seller as it couldn't be delivered.

I've called CS and get the same response, my account is banned and i have no recourse through them, they've revoked their buyer protections.

But i've just had a message from a buyer i sold a watch to on my account (that they've had for 11 days) saying there is nothing wrong with the watch they've just changed their mind and they're now saying they want a refund, can i still process the refund and get the watch returned as i have no options for this and eBay are saying they'll refund the buyer automatically if i dont respond?

I've also been waiting for an item to arrive that's been in transit for 21 days, that was meant to have come from Leicester but is arriving from Dubai that i cant challenge and i'm guessing i'll need to charge back through my bank as it's bouncing around in the UPS system for a week. It was this case that got my account suspended i'm guessing the seller reported me after i challenge them about where the watches were coming from and the inconsistencies in their listing.

What has happened to eBay, and what can i do?

EBay cancel a sale that I sent out

I sold a iPhone 17 pro for £999 and I’ve sent out the item. I get a email at midnight informing me the account is a scam and they’ve deleted the account and cancelled the sale.

However I’ve already sent the item out and Royal Mail can’t do anything.

What now does eBay refund me? The reason I ask is eBay once said no to a refund and then went yes a few days later.

Any one get experience on this?

Steps/Checklist to make sure I receive the 10% Final Value Fee discount after recently becoming a Top Rated Seller?

Hey everyone,

After the monthly evaluation on July 20th I crossed the thresholds required to become a Top Rated eBay seller & am no longer an Above Standard seller. In order to get a 10% discount on Final Value Fees I know my listings need to offer both:

#1. 1-Day handling time or same day

and #2. 30-Day Free returns.

My questions are mostly these: Do I need to offer free replacement of the item as a return option, or ONLY offer a full refund option for my free returns? Also, how do I check that a listing is "Top Rated Plus" (Where do I check on the screen/listing to see the banner?)

Any other tips/tricks I should know about here?....How do I mass select & edit 100 of my listings to make all 100 of them "Top Rated Plus" at the same time so I don't have to do it individually for each listing?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

eBay GSP so confused...

So I've been looking at my account today to understand what my current status is on eBay international sales, we do make sales internationally but I ship via Royal Mail Click & Drop, so I don't understand if I am using GSP or not?

It says in my eBay account I am, but then I charge a fixed fee for international shipping and it seems the majority of countries are switched off, which seems weird. Surely, if eBay is managing everything then I should sell to as many countries as possible?

Also I couldn't see this 'ship to eBay hub' thing, so yeah I am just confused... any help?

Sellers who don't want to cancel a sale "posting" things via Evri

Hi all, I'm beginning to have suspicions that some sellers are doing something with Evri so that they don't have to sell an item that has been won at auction. A couple of times now I've won a good deal at an auction and the seller has used Evri to send the item. The item gets marked as having been dropped off at the parcel drop off point but then it never gets picked up by the courier. So after a week or so when the item hasn't moved I end up saying it hasn't arrived and get a refund.

Is there some way a seller should take a parcel to the drop off point get it markes as dropped off but then take it back home. Is this even a thing?

This is only a very tiny number of sellers. I'm a seller myself and most of the sellers I've dealt with have been great.

Tax implications of sports cards sales?

Complex one- I’m over the threshold so will need to self assess in a few months.

However wondering if anyone had experience of the following:

My account is a personal account, nearly all of what I’ve sold is football cards OR football card boxes.

Most of the cards I’ve sold are cards that have been pulled from boxes I’ve bought, pretty much none for more than the cost of the box: example, £200 football hobby box; maybe sold £50 of cards from it, and kept the rest. Would this just be classed as personal and to not self assess on this at all? (However if I could include the losses that would probabley help for the next part)

The second lot of what I’ve sold is sealed boxes; with these I’ve bought with the intention to sell- example I may have bought a box for £200 and sold for £250. This I know I’ll need to include on the assessment.

The third part is a few cards I’ve bought then re-sold, some for a little bit more than I paid, some for a loss. Some cards I’ve just bought and added to my own collection.

I’ve also got a few sealed boxes that I haven’t sold OR opened yet- can these all be deducted from “profits”?

Basically I’m definitely down money between the boxes I’ve opened and the ones I’ve resold - Could I just include everything in my self assessment? in which case I’ve definitely not made profit. Can I include boxes I’ve not sold yet?

It’s a weird area because it’s mainly for a hobby but I do often buy extra boxes to sell for a profit (to cover some of the costs of the ones I open)

Sorry for the complex question and thanks in advance if anyone has experience themselves.
