Weekly Discussion Thread No. 212

Two losses in the two friendlies against Paderborn hopefully provide the final wake-up-call for the start into the season next Monday. 0 movements transfer-wise. There is a downside - 10, 6 & 9 - and an upside - El Mala - to this.

Advice for tickets

Hi everyone,

My friend and I have a tradition of going to watch a random team in Europe in February. This season we've chosen Köln! Have you guys got any advice for getting tickets? Should we become members of some sort or can you generally pick up tickets on general sale? We want to get in a few games if possible so if there are any local lower division teams in the area that are accessible by public transport and good to see we'd love to hear your suggestions!

We had a nightmare last year in Madrid with 3 of Madrid's la liga teams all having terrible ticketing systems so want to avoid this situation again!

Looking forward to visiting Köln and in 5 years of doing these trips the team we've gone to see has never lost! Hopefully we can keep that record going!

Thanks!

FC Köln | Hendrich exclusive: "I hope I can set that kind of example for the others."

Kathy Hendrich is the marquee signing for the 1. FC Köln women's team for the new season: the German international moved from Chicago to Cologne last week. The center-back made her debut in the FC jersey during a friendly match against Twente Enschede—and afterwards spoke about her fresh start, the transition from the US to the Bundesliga, and her role as a role model.

GEISSBLOG: Kathy, the match against Twente marked your first 30 minutes for FC. How are you feeling?

KATHY HENDRICH: "Very good. I was happy to get some minutes under my belt; it was a lot of fun. It was a good test, and everyone was fully focused. We rotated the squad a lot, but you didn't really notice it all that much."

You’ve only been here for a few days. How was your arrival?

“It went well; I’ve already trained with the team twice. I was welcomed really warmly—the girls are all very nice. I already knew a lot of them, too, which makes things easier.”

You know Marina Hegering well, of course. You might even play alongside her. Has that become almost routine?

"She’s certainly no stranger to me—the same goes for Lisa Schmitz at the back; we’ve played together quite a few times. That helps a lot. But ultimately, it probably doesn’t make a huge difference who you play with—the strengths are all very similar."

How are you finding the transition from America to the Bundesliga here? What are you looking forward to most?

"In America, it’s more of a counter-attacking game; it’s more end-to-end. In Europe, it’s much more about possession and is highly tactical—that will be the biggest adjustment. But I’m looking forward to it; I like both styles of play."

What are your personal goals with FC now?

"I simply want to be successful with the team. We have a really good squad with a lot of potential, and I hope we can climb as high up the table as possible."

You’ve also had contact with Britta Carlson through the DFB. Does that make settling in easier for you?

"It’s the same principle: the more people you already know, the better you know what to expect from them. I know what she demands and expects as a coach, and that’s certainly not a disadvantage."

Where do you see the team finishing the season?

"That’s always hard to say because you get held to it later. I’m not a fan of constantly checking the standings during the season; I prefer to focus on the task at hand in training every day. You always want to win—that should always be the goal in a match."

What does it mean to you to play for FC, closer to home?

"For me, it’s like coming home. I started out nearby—playing on the same team as Lisa and Marina back then, too—so in a way, it feels like things have come full circle. And it’s a bonus having my family close by."

You are also a role model for the younger players on the squad. What advice do you give them?

“I simply try to be myself and do what I always do. I want to show that you can achieve a lot if you work hard every day and stay focused. I hope I can set that kind of example for the others.”

1. FC Köln: Transfer Gespräche mit Khedira laufen

I’m not really a fan of …; I’d prefer to see a player with more potential for development in that position. What do you think?
