Englewood imposes first-ever mandatory water restrictions

Englewood imposes first-ever mandatory water restrictions

Hi neighbors -- Englewood now has its first-ever mandatory water restrictions, following a 5-2 city council vote on Aug. 17. Odd-numbered addresses can water lawns in the mornings and evenings of Mondays and Thursdays, and even-numbered addresses on Tuesdays and Fridays. And although the fountain outside city hall employs a closed-loop system that uses relatively little water, it has been shut down in connection with the restrictions. Englewood council to vote on mandatory water limits tonight

Tonight — Monday, Aug. 17 — the Englewood City Council will vote on a resolution calling for mandatory two-days-a-week lawn-watering restrictions due to the ongoing drought. The resolution would also expand the powers of the Utilities Department director during the period of restrictions, which would not have a firm sunset date because of the uncertainty of water supplies and weather. There would not be limits on watering vegetable gardens, as the resolution is written. Englewood sabbatical policy rewards longtime employees

After years of work and the stress that comes with it, many employees can start to get tired or face burnout at their jobs. Often, that feeling leads to employees searching for a new job. However, the City of Englewood is offering a new solution, and so far, it’s working.

Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Englewood began to offer the option of a sabbatical to long-tenured employees. Employees could, depending on how long they had been working for the city, take an extended break to relax and recharge before returning to their work.

Historic Englewood: Schools

Continuing the theme of Englewood schools, this is a photo of Englewood High during construction in 1920, near the intersection of Broadway and Hampden. The school later became Flood Middle School and was demolished in 2013.

‘Schools of Englewood’ museum exhibit opens doors

Hi neighbors -- The Historic Englewood Museum has opened the “Schools of Englewood” exhibit, spanning local educational history from the 1860s to the present. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday through January, and for this exhibit, admission is free. Admittedly I'm kind of an Englenerd, but I think it's pretty cool. Where in Englewood?!?

Last week’s location was correctly guessed as on Jason St. near Hampden, as viewed from VRCC’s parking lot. Can you guess this week’s location?

Question on Englewood's new tiered water rates

Updated -- It turns out that if you use less than 9,640 gallons of water per month, Englewood's new tiered rate plan saves you money.

Here's the TL:DR original:

As an editor, I often think "they should have hired an editor," and I'm thinking that right now after reading Englewood Utilities' explanation of the new tiered water rates.

I was gonna call today to ask a question but a couple of my grandkids wiped me out and I fell asleep until after business hours.

So ... the cutoff for tiers is 6000 gallons a month. To barely keep my lawn on life support this year means I'm using about 7000 gallons a month.

Here's my question: Will I be billed for 6000 gallons at the lower rate and 1000 gallons at the higher rate, OR will all 7000 gallons be billed at the higher rate?

Thanks, neighbors!

Englewood Utilities director to make case for mandatory water restrictions

Hi Englewood neighbors -- If you get Othoniel's email updates you probably already saw this, but if not, Englewood Utilities Director Pieter Van Ry will appear before the Englewood Water and Sewer Board this Tuesday, August 11, in a meeting that starts at 5 p.m., where he will make a case for a resolution that would call on Englewood City Council to impose mandatory water-use restrictions for people who get their water from Englewood. The current voluntary restrictions urge watering no more than three days a week, and whether mandatory restrictions would impose a two-day-a-week schedule is not clear from the vague agenda item.
