They could have sold the raffle car as an art object
In 1982, the Peter Stuyvesant Collection invited Wim T. Schippers to participate in a functional performance project in which Parisian taxis were transformed into art objects. Schippers decided to work on a Renault 18 GTL taxi using a sledgehammer. At first, he gave his assistants precise instructions to “pre‑dent” the car, but soon they—spurred on by Schippers—worked the car into such a group frenzy that it ended up looking as if it were ready for the scrapyard. For the two years that followed, the heavily battered Renault continued to drive through the streets of Paris as a taxi, to the great shock of tourists who thought they had hailed a cab driven by someone with a long history of accidents.
Wim T. Schippers on his taxi: “Everyone thinks the first dent is the worst. I solved that problem this way. With a new car, every dent or scratch takes something away; in this case, it adds something. It’s poetry on wheels.”
Tipped off by artist John Körmeling, a search was launched for the dented taxi. This search ended at a depot in Angerlo, where the car had been stored for years under the care of Jan de Ruiter, mayor of Zevenaar. A reader informed us that Wim T. Schippers’ dented taxi is now on display at the Zevenaar town hall. We do not know whether this is temporary or permanent.
