Auto-Mask Benchmark

I have recently upgraded to FinalCut 12.3 and have tried the Auto-Mask feature. Those of you on the M5 Max I would like to know what results you are getting. Let me explain:

I have a 1:00 minute video (4k30fps h265 4:2:0) and have applied one auto-mask. The export takes about 2:15 minutes on my machine, which is a 16' MBP M4Pro 14 CPU cores + 20 GPU cores & 24GB RAM.

I am wondering if upgrading to an M5 Max would improve the speed with Auto-Masks specifically or not. I have done numerous tests and everything points towards the fact that auto-mask utilises the neural engine more than the gpu (i might be wrong, but that's my conclusion after the tests i have done).

TLDR: would appreciate if you could replicate this test: 1 minute video + auto-mask (apply one effect through the auto-mask, like raising the exposure) and export it without any other effects applied.

DesignStudio (MotionVFX) license not verifying in Final Cut Pro — support not responding

Hey everyone,

I purchased a 1-year license for DesignStudio (MotionVFX plugin for Final Cut Pro) and it was working fine, but now I'm getting this error every time I open FCP:

"Unfortunately, we cannot verify DesignStudio license. Buy one and then restart Final Cut Pro. If the problem still exists, reinstall the pack."

The license shows as active in mLibrary, so it's not an expiration issue. I've tried:

- Deactivating/reactivating the license in mLibrary

- Restarting my Mac

- Reinstalling the pack

- Checking Gatekeeper/Privacy settings in case macOS was blocking something

Nothing has fixed it so far. I reached out to MotionVFX support through their chat (mvfx.com/chat) a while ago and haven't gotten a response yet.

Has anyone else run into this? Did you find a fix, or a faster way to get support to actually respond? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Should I learn it?

Apple just released an update across the entire suite. How do you think it compares to DaVinci Resolve today?

I want to learn editing and graphic design (anything except Adobe). I'm torn between these two options:

DaVinci Resolve (free) + Affinity Studio + Cavalry Studio <- This is the option I prefer.

Apple Creator Studio (I already own it)

But my problem is: 8GB of RAM, MacBook Air M1, macOS 26. And the fact that I don't have a big budget for plugins or a paid full version of either software. I pay $3/month for the Apple suite because I'm a student.

I know my only option here is Apple Creator Studio, but I also have another MacBook Air M4 16GB, but it's not mine; it belongs to the company I work for. So if I quit, I'll have to leave it behind and use the 8GB one. My question is:

Should I learn to use the DaVinci Resolve suite... or Apple's?

Because if I learn DaVinci Resolve and they take away my computer, I'll be short on RAM, but it will be more useful in the future.

Or should I use both?

Right now I clearly know I don't have much room to maneuver, but in the future I want to aim for high-ticket projects and my current goal is to earn more than $700 for now (I'm from Latin America). I want to make good animations, motion graphics, etc.

Returning to FC after 15 years, need advice

Context:
I’m a 20 year veteran of Audio Post and Editorial Post. Started on Media Composer/Pro Tools, still drive Pro Tools daily.

But I had several years of Final Cut as an alternative from Version 4 to Version 7. Yes, I’m one of the one’s that jumped ship with the trashcan and FCX.

I’m intrigued by the creator studio. I already pay a hell of a lot more for other suites, and I think this will give the ProApps team the funding they need.

Question:
Helping a team with an ongoing project, that I also want to try something stupid, mix in Logic. I think FCPs speed and some motion generators can really make this move quick.

For the life of me, I can’t wrap my head around the magnetic timeline, and any tut I see from the FCP crowd on YT is more geared toward newer (or younger) people. There’s nothing really geared towards increasingly older folks like myself that have two decades of muscle memory baked into my head. I’m here to try and embrace it though..

I get most of it, but my biggest head scratcher is a 5-6 camera shoot with about 4-5 mic lines from the bag and trying to do a proper edit with each of those mic lines. I feel like making each speaker a “lane” is the way to go, but unsure…. The idea though of object based editing is quite interesting… just wish you could toggle off the magnetic aspect and not just use a tool to create a slug clip. I digress…

Anyone have any recommendations for learning material? Apple’s official docs is not rich (unless I have the wrong one).

Thought about ripple since those guys are still kicking it strong, but not sure if the package is geared towards someone like myself.

Anyway, I have high hopes for the ProApps. Pixelmator and MotionVFX was mission critical grab.

Looks like bright skies ahead. Need to make Logic more like a DAW though….

Looking for editors to test my Dialogue Enhancer plugin (Free)

I'm a video editor from the Netherlands, and over the past few months I've been developing a plugin for Final Cut Pro called Dialogue Enhancer.

The goal is to improve dialogue with as little effort as possible. Instead of tweaking multiple EQ and compressor settings, you choose one of four sound presets:

• Neutral
• Warm
• Bright
• Broadcast

and then adjust a single “Enhance’ slider to dial in the amount of processing.

I've been using it on my own projects for a while now, and it's reached the point where I'd really like feedback from editors outside my own workflow.

I'm looking for a small group of Final Cut Pro users who would be willing to install the beta, use it on a few real projects, and give me honest feedback.

I'm especially interested in things like:

- Does it actually improve your workflow?
- Which preset do you end up using most?
- Where do you usually set the Enhance slider?
- Does anything sound harsh, muddy, or over-compressed?
- Is there anything that feels confusing or unintuitive?

The beta is of course completely free. I'm not selling anything I just want to make the plugin as good as possible before releasing it publicly.

If you're interested, leave a comment or send me a DM and I'll send you the installer.

Thanks a lot!!

Trying to add an on-screen timer to a timelapse clip. What's the best method to do so?

Hey everyone, I'm editing a video and have a long clip I'm going to speed up and make into a timelapse. I want to have an on-screen timer to show how long it took in real time to complete the task I recorded, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to do so.

I have MotionVFX, but the plugins they provide aren't intuitive and don't seem to work as advertised. I want to make some breaks in the timelapse where I play a few seconds in real time, then go back to a timelapse. Does anyone have any recommendations for a way to get an on-screen timer that can handle all this? Thank you!

MotionPrep - Publish and organize parameters in Motion. (FREE)

Hey guys, I built a FREE tool called MotionPrep that lets you publish/unpublish and bulk-organize parameters in Motion for FCP, just by dragging and dropping into the app's list. Still in beta, but working smoothly here. Would really love to hear what other motion designers think about it. I recorded a quick video showing it in action so you can get an idea of how it works, and if you want to know more and download it, just check out the full post here: Century - MotionPrep 👈🏼

FCP 12.3 always freezing when changing a project's resolution.

Have anyone else faced this issue of FCP 12.3 freezing completely when changing a projects resolution? It happens every time for me.

This is very inconvenient as I have a horizontal project that I want to convert to vertical to extract shorts/reels from. But FCP freezes completely when I try to change the project's resolution or aspect ratio.

Hopefully it is a common enough issue that Apple would release a fix soon.

FCP TO DAVINCI ROUND TRIP

I've edited a video in FCP and am trying to grade it in Davinci. I exported the XML from FCP, imported it into Davinci, fixed the errors by ticking off Conform Lock Enabled and Reconforming to bins. However, the video in Davinci is playing the source media without the edits I've made in FCP. I can clearly see the timeline has the cuts I made and everything, but it's not paying the portions of the video that's supposed to be at each cut. Instead the cut kind of resets the video to the beginning of the source media. Anyone know how to correct this?

Keyframeless custom captions style won't work

First time using Keyframeless, i didnt even know it had captions and even supporting other languages than english, working pretty nice in mine.

https://preview.redd.it/tppgpoq964bh1.png?width=684&format=png&auto=webp&s=82740950e76fd02390c319b2904ad7ba2163b3f3

When choosing the captions style you can drop the moti file from any custom title you've got so i wanted to use the newest Dylan Bates subtitles which i bought literally few hours ago. But it doesnt work.

Every built into the keyframeless style works, but any custom i drop there doesnt - basically the captions dont change the text inside

So instead of the captions showing what was said its just the default text being displayed

Anyones got any ideas id love to get these custom subtitles to work with keyframeless and actually show the correct stuff.

FCP Dual Monitor Bug: Clicking Inspector on Screen 1 breaks Timeline sync on Screen 2

Running a dual monitor setup in Final Cut Pro:
Monitor 1: Browser, Viewer, Inspector
Monitor 2: Timeline
The Problem:
I select a clip on my timeline (Monitor 2). As soon as I click into Monitor 1 to tweak a setting in the Inspector, FCP shifts focus to Browser instead of staying on my timeline clip.
How do I lock the Viewer and Inspector to the active timeline selection so clicking Monitor 1 doesn't hijack it? Thanks!

Trying to figure out a workflow and solving issue with a NAS

I recently invested in a NAS Asustor AS 6704T Gen 2 ( a first time), extras 10G switch and everything else to get a better 2 editors workflow using FCP and a better storage solution.

I did spend a lot of time doing research since I am full noob on technical stuffs related to network but...didn't think there could be an issue with FCP libs, NAS not being an APFS volume....thanks Apple.

I have never had the intention to edit directly on the NAS but I realized I may sometimes have to open an FCP lib already archived on the NAS for a quick modification, drag and drop an element or event from one lib to another and so on.

Long story short:

FCP libs get corrupted as soon as my modify a Project name and FCP throw me an error message stating that it can't read my library anymore. I try to open it twice again and then it work again... weird, not trustworthy. Any idea why ?

I have read threads here and there to optimize settings and have done the best (SMB 3, SMB 2 lowest, SMB signing set on default, enable Samba VFS, and even went to the Samba config file through terminal to add a line" Durable Handles 2048 " since the latest ADM version on the NAS doesn't offer a graphical interface to get this setting.

My volume is a 2 x10TB ironwolf in Raid 0 , BRTF file system (remembered hearing it was better than ext4 for some reasons, yet, still not APFS of course), I have 2 x 1TB Nvme used for Read only cache

Long story long :

My network is the following
I work on an external 2TB SSD connected to my laptop for professional work as I have always done, I am connected in 10G to a Qnap unmanaged 10Gbps switch in another room.
My wife works on our personal projects like youtube and others on another 2TB SSD connected to her laptop in that aforementioned other room where is is also connected to that Qnap unmanaged 10Gbps switch. Her older laptop is only using a 2.5G adapter for now though as the whole investment was already a lot for me at the moment. It may be a tad limiting if we want to edit at the same time from her SSD connected to her laptop.
The NAS uses SMB multichannel to benefit of its 2 x 5Gbps LAN ports connected to the 10G switch.
Finally that switch is connected to the entrance box where another Qnap 2.5G + 10G switch receives internet, sends it over to a wifi router, distributes the cables going to the rooms in 10G.

Our workflow is the following:
We work on our own external SSDs plugged into our laptops, I sometimes access hers if I need to work on personal stuffs too, our media files are in a dedicated Footage folder on these SSDS, I don't import them into FCP libraries,
At night, I back up everything these 2 SSDS to a bigger SSD connected to my laptop using CCC, then I back up this big SSD to my NAS also using CCC
Finally I back up that NAS using the Asustor Backpu central app to an Akitio box connected to the NAS through USB with also 2x10TB ironwolf drives which are not aggregated, then the NAS should backup the most critical 10TB to an Hetzner storage box using Syncovery (If I manage to get it work correctly cause for now it keeps getting stuck on an FCP library which contains too many files- I guess - despite having set up exclusion masks...)

Once a project is finished, I planned to consolidate our libraries, export a clean version of the edit and delete all the footage to get a smaller footprint, all contained inside the corresponding FCP library and move it manually to the NAS. Nothing left on the SSDS.
Problem is, it would be convenient not having to copy back these FCP libraries locally if I had to access something or do a quick modification but afraid of getting them corrupted but I could accept this if I was at least sure that simply storing them on the NAS without opening them wouldn't compromise their integrity.
I also wish I can avoid having to compress them to send them to the cloud cause this would add another tasks and I would need to redo all the copies I have already spent doing....

I know it s a messy post, as messy as all this stuff is for me. NAS is complicated, even more so with FCP, I didn't expect that but don't want to go back to my older workflow which became cumbersome as projects increased, and less versatile for collaborative work.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Take care of you, and your valuable data

Final Cut Pro 12.3 new Ai match color: Real tool or hype?

There are a lot of expectations when 'auto match' or 'ai color grading' is touted. But every time I have tried them in NLE software I'm always disappointed.

That's why I was very intrigued with Apple's new match color in Final Cut Pro 12.3. This was a feature they already had before but it was a black box #1 and it was an algorithm that didn't yield results that were very good.

So I was curious to try out the NEW match color using Apple intelligence and ran the comparison against DaVinci Resolve's auto 'Shot Match to this Clip' and Adobe Premiere's 'Apply Match'

I have to say, for the first time I am speechless with results and it finally feels like it is something that could be usable.

I made video exploring new feature and comparing it to the other auto match features in the other NLEs.

Best beginner-friendly Final Cut Pro courses?

I am a complete beginner and have never worked with Final Cut Pro before. I really want to learn it from scratch and build a solid foundation.Since I prefer a well-structured, step-by-step learning path over searching for random individual tutorials, I am specifically looking for great course recommendations. I don't mind paying for a high-quality course if it's worth it.What are the absolute best paid or structured courses you would recommend for someone starting at zero?
