Need advice: UPSC to MBA – How can I build relevant work experience before B-school?

Hi everyone,

I spent the last few years preparing for UPSC, but I've decided to move on and pursue an MBA. I'm currently preparing for CAT.

My concern is that I have no conventional corporate work experience. I know that any work I start now won't count as work experience for CAT admissions, but I'm more concerned about Summer Internships (SIPs) and final placements once I'm in B-school. I feel having some practical experience would make me a stronger candidate during interviews.

Since I'm preparing for CAT, I can only commit part-time until November. After CAT, however, I can work full-time for around 4–5 months before joining college (assuming things go well).

I'm looking for roles that would genuinely help me develop relevant skills and strengthen my profile. I'm open to startups, business analytics, operations, product, consulting, founder's office, research, or anything else where I can learn. It doesn't necessarily have to pay well. Learning and resume value are my priorities.

A little about my background:

  • Graduated from IISER Pune with a major in Chemical Sciences. Minor in Maths and Physics.
  • Completed my MS thesis abroad and co-authored a paper in ACS Catalysis.
  • Runner-up in an online Startup Weekend during COVID, where our team built and pitched a startup concept in 72 hours using market research, customer validation, and a working prototype.
  • I might also get a Business Analytics internship through a friend next month at a small firm (not confirmed yet).

Given my background, what kind of roles should I target? Where should I look? Are there any platforms, startups, fellowships, or opportunities that you'd recommend?

Any advice or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

F20 Looking for My First Tech Job in Bengaluru

I finished my final university exams just few, but I've been searching for a tech job for months.

I have an education loan to repay, and the pressure is growing every day.

I've built projects, completed an internship, and applied to hundreds of jobs. I've been shortlisted by several companies through both on campus and off campus hiring, but many of them ghosted me after assessments or interviews.

The only offers I keep getting are for sales roles. I respect those roles, but I've worked hard to build a career in tech.

Sometimes it feels like referrals matter more than effort because I don't have anyone who can refer me.

I'm not asking for sympathy. I just want one opportunity to prove myself.

If your company is hiring freshers for software development, AI/ML, cloud, QA, IT support, or related roles, I'd be grateful if you could let me know or consider referring me. Even a single opportunity would mean a lot.

This shortlist mail from Native Engineering every fresher expect...

been sending out applications for weeks now, mostly into silence...so when a mail from Native Engineering popped up saying I'd been shortlisted for their Junior Engineer internship, I wasn't expecting much, but figured why not joined the webinar anyway…

Turned out to be more useful than I thought.... they broke down the program,,,what the internship actually covers, and how it's meant to give freshers some hands-on exposure before they're thrown into the "experience required" trap. No hidden catches either, they laid out the entire process including fees right at the start…

Half my problem this whole time has been not knowing what skills I'm missing for that elusive "EXPERIENCE." This session at least cleared that up a bit....

posting this for anyone else stuck in the same off-campus grind, might be worth a look..
