London Pop-Up Haul

London Pop-Up Haul

Hey!

This was my first up pop-up sale and I found a lot of the info here useful, so just adding my own in case it helps anyone.

My haul:
- LOTR set - £100
- The Iliad - £50
- 1984 - £25
- DrStrange comic (not pictured) - Free
- Cookie - Free

I didn’t find 1984 out, but based on advice from here at the end of my time just asked if they happened to have a copy. They kindly found not one, but two! The latest version and the blue 2014 version. I took one and a lady by me took the other.

We arrived quite late, 9:05am, and got in at 13:55. So, yeah, expect a wait aha. Apparently even those arriving from 7:30 had to wait a similar amount of time, they just got to go in first. Staff mentioned there was a LE Count of Monte Cristo that went in the first 40mins and some other LEs from storage.

Staff were lovely, would try to keep your spirits up, showed off a copy of the upcoming GOTR LE. The room with the books was quite small, felt really cramped tbh. They refreshed books occasionally. I’m not sure what happens if you’re in-between refreshes, they had just refreshed before we went in and like 60% of books were taken when we left.

They had lots of the new Iliad and Odyssey LE sets for £500, or you could buy the books separately for £150 each.

Overall a good time but expect to dedicate half the day to it. I personally wouldn’t have bothered if it rained but thankfully the weather worked out.

Document your collection for insurance: new insurance records feature on RareBindings.net

Hello lovely book collectors!

I wanted to share another update on https://www.rarebindings.net, the site I built to help keep track of all the special editions being released these days.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if your collection was damaged, lost, or stolen? Could you actually prove to an insurer what you owned and what it was worth? I recently added insurance records to help with exactly that.

For each book in your collection, you can now create an insurance record with:

- Condition grades for the book and dust jacket, plus any flaws and condition notes

- A replacement value, with optional appraisal details

- Purchase source, copy identifier (e.g. your number in a numbered edition), and provenance notes

- Photos of the book itself, such as the front, back, spine, signature page, number line, edges, and slipcase

- Documents like receipts and appraisals

Each record gets a unique reference number, and when you need it, you can export everything as a CSV, a formatted PDF report, or a full evidence ZIP that bundles the report together with all your photos and documents, ready to hand to your insurer or keep as a backup somewhere safe.

This pairs nicely with the collection valuations feature from my last post: the estimated value from recent eBay sales data is a good starting point when deciding on a replacement value for each book.

The site also supports saved searches and stock alerts, so you can keep an eye on specific books, authors, publishers, stores, or features without manually checking everything all the time.

RareBindings now supports:

- The Broken Binding

- OwlCrate

- Folio Society

- Subterranean Press

- Suntup Editions

- Grim Oak Press

- LitJoy

- Goldsboro Books

- Dragonsteel Books

- Moonlight Book Box

- The Locked Library

- The Bookish Shop

- Arcane Society

- Lit Escalates

- Waterstones

- Easton Press

- Centipede Press

- The Signed Page

- Conversation Tree Press

- Curious King

- MidWorld Press

- Page & Wick

- Bewitched Pages
- Fairyloot

- Smut & Sip

With more to come! As always, I'm building this as a collector myself, so feedback, bug reports, and store suggestions are very welcome.

Thank you!

Folio just announce the summer sale already please!

I’m in a lucky place where I’m itching to get new Folio books but one thing I can’t stand is buying something and then 2 weeks later it’s in a sale. Drives me insane.

Surely it must be soon?

Also I’m open to buying advice if you feel confident / know historically certain titles are never going to get a discount let me know.

Yes I know they won’t listen - I just hope I’m not the only one ready to splurge the cash and someone understands.

Yes I can be patient too. I just hate being patient though lol.

London pop-up haul

One tip for anyone going next year - the queue is going to be exponentially slower than you expect. I started queuing at 10am and got in around 2:30. Still lots of stuff left by that time. I think the only tactic is to join the queue at like 7am to be spared the pain of the queue.

Folio Pop-Up Sale Haul

I love seeing everyone else’s haul from today so here is mine! :) Hope you enjoy!

I’m not normally a lucky person but today the book gods were on my side! Not only did I get to complete my Lord of the rings collection - I managed to pick up (by accident) the signed copy of Hamnet for £50?!

I didn’t even know I had the signed copy until I was in the pub with a cheeky pint having a flick through and there it was!

So unbelievably happy!!! Thanks Folio!

The Hobbit - £25
The Silmarillion - £25
Hamnet - £50
Rebecca - £25

Folio pop-up store haul

Got there at 7am, there already was a fair sized queue, Folio improved their queuing system which was a really good idea, got into the shop at 10:20, picked up all of the above at £25 each so really happy with the experience.

Dear Folio Society--here's how you take all my money!

Once I see a few key favorites in my library on your website, I'll refinance my house if that's what it takes! Here's a dream list of what I'd like to see one day.

  1. It by Stephen King.

  2. Lord of the Rings (series) by JRR Tolkien (but with an updated look. While the current look is beautiful in its own way, it doesn't strike me as LotR. The waves and triangles feel too generic for such a fantastic [literally] series of stories).

  3. Pillars of the Earth (series) by Ken Follett.

  4. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.

  5. The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers.

  6. Saga of the Seven Suns (series) by Kevin J. Anderson.

  7. Harry Potter (series) by JK Rowling. This series is a classic that's already proven itself to have staying power that I think comes with the Folio Society name.

Looking forward to hearing that some of these are in the works! Thanks for all you do.

Visiting London in late September, any tips for going to the Folio store? (And Folio Vault? And used bookstores?)

I'll be in London in late September to visit family and plan on visiting the Folio Society store. I assume outside of a sale (flash or regular), their prices in-store are the same as online, is that right? Or is there a chance I might find something discounted?

And likewise for the Folio Vault - where I see one needs to make an appointment to visit, is that right?

Lastly, while I'm in London, are there any secondhand bookstores that a Folio-aware local would recommend I visit? For example here in Toronto I'd say the BMV at Yonge/Dundas as they often have a good selection of used Folios at a decent price. Which store has the best used Folio selection outside of the above two?

Thanks!

I don’t suppose anyone is going to the Folio Sale and can help a disabled person out :))

Hiya
I won’t be making it to the folio sale tomorrow, as accessible as they do make it it’s just not feasible for me with my conditions to get there and back.

If anyone is going and would like to help me out by seeing if they can grab a book or two I’m after I’d greatly appreciate it.

A lovely person from here helped me out last year and I have messaged them again but I’m yet to hear back and I’m aware they have a toddler so might not be going this year.

Anyways if anyone is willing to help out let me know!

Reading Light

Might be a strange one? Does anyone use a good bright light specifically for reading? My rapid deterioration into middle age and tiredness sometimes catches up with me.

Any advice/examples would be greatly appreciated!

My Folio Society Collection

Sowing the Wind
A History of Scotland
A History of Japan

These 3 titles are not pictured as I’m currently reading Sowing the Wind, my Dad borrowed A History of Scotland (we’re partly of Scottish heritage and the Tartan Army’s World Cup shenanigans sparked his interest 😆) and A History of Japan is one that I recently ordered and is en route to fill a notable gap in coverage. My study is truly my happy place. I’m happy to answer any questions — hope you all enjoy! 🍻

London Pop-up Sale

Those of you who have attended the yearly pop-up in London what should I expect?

What time do people show up and how busy has it been in the past?

Is the selection good and have you found titles you were actively seeking?

My first folio society book (probably my last 😄)

Purchased my first folio book, cost me a fortune but wanted to own one so pulled the trigger. Book feels so amazing. Wish it costs less as taxes and delivery fee alone costs around ₹8k. Wanted to share😊
