He will be always great when he's actually on form and diciplined. Dribbling and ball control that's genuinely elite level as we all know, still completing over 84 percent of his passes and racking up 19 key passes in limited minutes this past season. And the fee is zero, so from a pure cost basis there's basically no financial risk in signing him outright.

Where it gets complicated is everything else. His stamina numbers are well below what Simeone typically demands from wide players in that system like his son Giuliano, Baena and Lookman. And his defensive contribution is genuinely weak too, not the profile you'd usually associate with an Atlético wide player who's expected to press and track back all match. On top of that his wage demands are reportedly still high given his Man United contract history, which somewhat cancels out the "free transfer" appeal financially once you factor in what you're actually paying him to be there.

So this isn't really a value signing in the traditional sense. It's Atlético betting they can get one specific version of Sancho, the one who we saw at Dortmund years ago, rather than the version that's struggled for consistency since. If Simeone can actually get him tactically disciplined enough to fit the system, the technical upside is obviously real. If not, this becomes a wasted year on wages for a player who doesn't fit the identity of the team at all.

Romano dropped the "here we go soon" a few minutes ago, and honestly this one's been building for a while now, so wanted to actually think through why Chelsea are willing to go close to sixty million for a guy who's kind of flown under the radar until recently.

Started looking at his season and the first thing that jumps out is just how quick he actually is : 36.13 km/h, BRUH, which matters a lot for the kind of recovery defending Alonso wants from his back line if he wanna play 3 at the back with 2 tanks like Tosun or Chalobah or a Mid-Tank like Hato. Add in elite tackling, real strength in the air, and he's the type of defender who can cover ground and win duels rather than just sit and read the game from a static position.

The numbers back it up too. 35 appearances this season, sixty tackles, seventy interceptions, and he's kept his pass success rate in the 12% of the leagues best, so he's not sacrificing composure on the ball for all that physical work. And it's not just stats either, the guy's actually been collecting trophies at Palace, FA Cup, Community Shield, and the Conference League all in the last couple of seasons. That's not nothing for a defender who a lot of people still don't really talk about outside Palace circles and he's a WC French player.

What I think this signing is really about though is timing more than raw talent ceiling. He's 26, so there's basically a lot of growth potential left in him, this is a development project but at the same time a proven player, it's Chelsea buying exactly what he is right now. And what he is right now happens to be one of the more consistent, battle tested defenders in the league who's stepped up as a leader since Guehi left Palace. For a team that's been genuinely shaky at the back, that kind of proven reliability is probably worth more to them than a younger, higher ceiling option who needs time to adapt.

Only real question mark for me is whether close to sixty million is a bit of a premium given he's not some generational ball player nothing like WOW. But for a defender who can recover at pace and win physical battles consistently in the Premier League, in this current market, it's honestly not as crazy as it might look on paper.
