Fosi Audio S3 Streamer: 90-Day Mid-term Review

Fosi Audio S3 Streamer: 90-Day Mid-term Review

Just dropped my 90-day real-world review of the Fosi Audio S3 streamer! At $260, it's currently the cheapest balanced network streamer on the market, but is the software actually ready yet? I’ve been using it to feed my Genelec active speakers directly.

Check out my honest thoughts on the hardware, the latest OTA updates, and what's still missing in the S3!

Shipping Issues

Has anyone else experienced shipping issues with Fosi? I ordered 7 business days ago and still have not gotten shipping info. I contacted support and they stated they would expedite my shipping and contact the warehouse.

Update:
It shipped yesterday, from a warehouse in china. Oh well at least it shipped

Apartment Setup - Powered by Fosi Stack

Finally have my "finished" apartment setup, and using a lot of Fosi components for it!

Preamp - Fosi ZP3

DAC - Fosi ZD3

Amp - Fosi ZA3

Headphone Amp - ZH3

CD Player - Fosi Merak

Additional items:

Turntable - Audio Technica LP-70x

Streamer - WiiM Pro

Speakers - Elac Debut3.0 DB6.3

Overall I'm really happy with this setup. The ZP3 is a great preamp for the price, doing everything I need out of it. The ZA3 has had no problem driving the speakers in the slightest. Glad I went this route for my first full setup!

Black Knob on ZD3

It's slightly smaller but I think it looks fine. Just didn't get on with orange.

ZH3 or ZD3?

Hi all!

Question for people who own a ZD3 or ZH3.

I have the GR70 tube pre-amp, but I am looking for a Fosi DAC to use with it.

I've been looking at the ZD3 and ZH3. I know the ZD3 is a pure dac, but the ZH3 is a dac/amp. Is there is a noticable difference between the two? I like the idea of the ZH3 since I could also use it as a non-tube amp option, but I wonder if the performance of the ZD3 is better since it's a dedicated dac?

I'd love to hear thoughts in either direction before I make a purchase!

ZA3/ZD3 Dialogue lacking clarity compared to TV speakers

I just bought my ZA3 and ZD3 pair and I'm noticing that dialogue is being muffled compared to just using my TV speakers which is really strange to me. The clarity on my TV speakers is much better and easier to listen to. I ended up switching back because it was too distracting. I've been troubleshooting for a while to no avail and it seems to affect all outputs regardless. I'm very new to this so it's quite possible I overlooked something?

Here's my current setup:

Westinghouse Roku TV

Settings:
Audio Output: eARC (ZD3)
Preferred Streaming Format: Auto
Digital Output Format: Stereo

V

ZD3 in HDMI mode (no bypass)

V

ZA3 in XLR mode (stereo)

V

Magnepan LRS Speakers (placed about 2 foot from the wall and 4 feet from the TV on either side facing forward)

V3 mono, appropriate for Magnepan?

I picked up a pair of Magnepan MG12 and want to know if the little V3 monoblocks are good for the 86 dB/w 4 ohm load highly inefficient speaker. Everyone say I will need a ton of current to drive them.

Does anyone know what Fosi’s product cycle is like? can I expect a v4 in a year or so?

Fosi DS3 Portable DAC on Prime deals for just $71

Amazing deal for the first portable device using ES9039Q2M XMOS POWERED with a hardware-level support PEQ device with 32 band EQ. I Just got mine, it can't get any cheaper than this, even cheaper than A.E. It has also Spatial 7.1 for gaming and supports native DSD512. Fosi also has a 20% discount if bought from them instead of Amazon.

Note: I'm not affiliated to Fosi, Amazon or A.E. Just sharing a great deal here. Just purchased it on my own dime.

Problem with static at start

I’ve owned my fosi k7 pro for about 7 months now. No problems whatsoever until just about a month ago. Whenever I turn on the device there is a nasty static sound coming from my right headphone. It’s pretty rough and I’ve only found one way to mitigate it, and that’s by turning the k7 on and off until it eventually starts without the sound/static. Takes about 5-10 times which is annoying. I don’t run Spatial Audio nor EQ Software. The drivers say they’re up to date and my headphones (beyerdynamics MMX 330 pros) work perfectly with any other system I have in the house. I’ve blown into the jack to see if any debris would jump out. I changed the power outlet it was connected to. I’m starting to think the device itself is cooked. Please let me know your thoughts!
