Help with external flash :D

Hello, this is actually my first post ever on reddit!
I have recently acquired a fuji x-half and I'm really interested in getting an external flash to make my photos pop. I need a very inexpensive and tiny option. I'm not a beginner in photography, but I'm faaaaar from being a pro. I've researched and learned a lot about flash on cold shoe mounts recently, but I wanted to make this post to confirm my findings, so here we go.
1-) From what I understand, any flash with the slave setting (I hate calling it a slave lol) works for the x-half. Is that correct?
2-) I found hot shoe flashes to be smaller and cheaper than flashes with slave settings. Then I learned about a photo sensitive adaptor that mounts on the cold shoe. From what I understand, with that adaptor I can use a hotshoe flash on my x-half, am I right?
3-) With that being said, what would you guys recommend? "cold shoe" flash (as in a flash with s1 or s2 settings) or a "hot shoe adaptor" + regular hot shoe flash? any specific models you recommend?

Car show in Reala Ace

Visited the Highway 11 Cruisers meetup earlier today in Newmarket ON.

Chose Reala Ace, mainly because I don’t use it enough. Still trying to learn which film sims work in which situations!

Random photos from the past month

I just started taking photos this year as a hobby and love this little camera. Please excuse my not so great composition skills. These photos are all SOOC except for some small cropping on a couple of them.

blown out even in darker situations

I'm having a hard time taking shots that aren't totally blown out. even in the darkest situations whites and light seem totally blown out to the point of almost blurring the pictures. is it possible the shutter is in a setting i may have missed or that the shutter is faulty?

Anyone contemplating selling their “higher end” gear now owning a half ?

I get it depends on your use case, but these days I am just a casual photographer. I don’t do professional work anymore, I don’t care about moving subjects, etc. I have a my Canon R8 body and a few lenses, but I haven’t used it in months. Since the X-Half came along I am using it non stop.

I am thinking about selling the Canon gear, recouping the value which looks good right now, and just enjoying the Fuji. Heck I might take that money and buy another Fuji body again in the future. But right now months in the Canon gear is collecting dust. I tried using it the other day and hated it lol 😂

To be fair and I am still in the honey moon period, but after exhaustively reading every review, I find a few things about the camera better than expected:

  1. It’s intuitive to use. It only took a few times to get the hang of the “two lcd screen system” for navigating the menus. Reviews noted lag, I don’t see anything ?

  2. It seems fast enough. It get it’s not lightening fast, but reviews noted it was too slow , even in film mode. I am not seeing anything that stands out

  3. Image quality is way better than expected especially so in good light. In good light images are very much Fuji. The colors, tones make for a better picture subjectively so than my Canon body makes SOOC. I did pixel peep on my MacBook and nothing really stood out. It’s the same high quality Fuji JPEG engine albeit in a smaller sensor. The Canon is technically better of course but SOOC the Fuji images are much more pleasing to the eye. I also read the lens isn’t sharp, not true at all. It’s crisp.

  4. Film mode isn’t bad at all. I loved it. I read it’s slow to advance, but seems fine. I also read the film advance lever doesn’t feel as good . Never had one before so nothing to compare it to, but seems good to me.

  5. I do wish you could isolate which filters you prefer instead of scrolling. Some are cheesy, wish I could simply create my own preferences. Also would be nice to combine filters and film types.

  6. My only negative is probably battery life . Seems like they say it lasts forever, possibly true in shooting , but the WiFi transfers seem to drain it quickly. Yes I could do an SD card transfer, but I kinda prefer the app. It’s fast, and seems reliable. Plus the Film mode development process is beautiful.

A few questions:

Should I get the small rig grip or does it take away anything from what this camera is ? I have big hands and find the camera feels okay, but I do think this one would be very easy to drop.

Are cases needed ? The plastics on the body don’t feel quite as robust as other Fuji bodies so not sure how well they hold up.

Anyone hate the cap and string ? I mean it’s nice so you don’t loose the cap, but one handed shooting downward the stupid cap dangles in the way.

Are the viewfinder rubber cups online worth it ? I wear glasses and fine it’s hard to get my eyes close to the viewfinder.

Trying it out

Trying to use grain abit more, I’ve seen other peoples photos and the grain adds such extra depth and feel. I saw the farmer in the field opposite my house creating this awesome dust as he worked and couldn’t resist a few shots.

The sky has blown slightly even with exposure dropped to negative 2 but it just adds to the feel.

#14: ACROS Monochrome - Silent Hill

Acros (Red filter) + weak-small grain, all in film camera mode (72 shots). We've had a very humid summer, which is gross, but lately we're dipping between 10 to 15°C at night, which creates one of my absolute favorite weather: fog. Waking up at 5am to run out into it with my dog (and coming home three hours later already tired from going up massive slopes on the way back) is very much worth it. 10/10 would recommend if you happen to have chances of fog where you are.
