Portugal changed its citizenship rules. This petition asks Parliament not to move the goalposts for people already caught in the transition.

This deserves more attention.

There is currently an official petition on the Portuguese Parliament website asking for a proper transitional regime for the new Portuguese nationality law.

📌 Petition: https://participacao.parlamento.pt/initiatives/6439

And importantly, it is not asking Portugal to cancel the new law.

It is asking for something much more reasonable: if people built their lives in Portugal under one set of rules, they should not suddenly lose years of progress because the rules changed while they were already in the system.

Under the previous rules, naturalisation was generally possible after 5 years of legal residence. The new law increased that period to 7 years for EU/CPLP nationals and 10 years for others, while also introducing additional requirements.

The problem is the transition.

There are people who moved to Portugal, worked here, paid taxes, raised families and made long-term decisions based on the law that existed at the time.

Some were also stuck for months or years waiting for Portuguese authorities to process their residence permits. They had no control over those delays.

The petition asks Parliament to protect several groups caught between the old and new systems, including:

  • people whose residence procedures were delayed by the Portuguese administration;
  • people who had already received approval but were still waiting for their residence card;
  • certain parents and grandparents of Portuguese citizens who were eligible under the previous rules;
  • families where a pregnancy had already begun before the new law entered into force;
  • people with nationality procedures already underway whose legal position now needs clarification.

There is a broader principle here that matters even if none of this affects you personally.

Governments have the right to change immigration and citizenship policies.

But changing the rules for the future is very different from changing the consequences for people who already organised years of their lives around the rules the state itself established.

A functioning immigration system needs predictability. Otherwise every promise made to today’s residents can simply become irrelevant after the next legislative change.

The petition already has around 4,600 signatures.

If it passes 7,500 signatures, it reaches an important threshold: petitions with more than 7,500 signatures are considered in the plenary of the Portuguese Parliament.

So this is one of those cases where a few thousand additional signatures can actually make a difference in how much political attention the issue receives.

Signing is free and is done through the official Portuguese Parliament website. You need to register on the platform first, activate your account by email, log in and then click “Assinar” on the petition.

Even if the new nationality rules don’t affect you, supporting a fair transition sends a simple message:

Change the rules if you believe they need to change. But don’t move the finish line for people who are already running the race.

Anyone know of vehicles where I can make the GV investment and remain fully exposed to BTC or ETH? if this is possible, I might as well keep it in a GV fund and get the golden visa but haven't found a fund that supports this

90/180 Day Schengen Rule

I had a situation last year that may be relevant for some in here.

Last year, I was assisting a UK Property Investor with a portfolio in the UK and Southern Europe who was becoming increasingly frustrated with the 90/180 Day travel restriction imposed by Brexit.

As he had a quite significant presence in Europe, he wanted increased access. After assessing his profile, I identified that a Caribbean CBI program would restore his Schengen-Free Access and a European residency program would then give him a base in Europe.

I assisted him to complete a Caribbean CBI program initially for the Immediate Mobility and I am now looking at his options for an EU Residency.

Its quite staggering the amount of times I am hearing International investors say 'I should've done this years ago'.

I do find and I'm sure many in here will agree with me, planning ahead is so vitally important to ensure a smooth continuity of operations.

Without suitable Global Mobility, these problems would have persisted for this individual and led to issues in his business activities.

cyprus golden visa vs portugal for permanent residency

Looking at the cyprus golden visa after Portugal started feeling too competitive. Want permanent residency through real estate, not full-time living. Anyone done the Cyprus property route recently and still happy with the stay rules?

Why do the truly excellent immigration law firms in Portugal actually have lower Google ratings?

It’s really interesting—I’ve noticed that in Portugal, when you’re choosing an immigration law firm, those with high ratings aren’t necessarily the best firms, although of course it’s possible they are. However, from what we know and have observed, these large, well-known law firms in Portugal employ a great many lawyers. Yet if you look at their Google Maps ratings, they’re actually very low. The reviews at the top are mostly one- or two-star ratings, with comments such as ‘disgusting’, ‘absolutely terrible’ or ‘incredibly slow’. It’s really quite intriguing – why is that? What do you all think?

Dubai Golden Visa

Need some advise.

I started the GV application two weeks back and responded back with the required documentation.

The application was unfortunately being rejected with no reason stated.

What should I do in my next steps? Can I appeal for the application as I’ve met the requirements.
\- Basic salary over 30k
\- Worked in the same company for more than two years, as an engineer
\- Attested university certificate with equalisation

Appreciate some advise if anyone has gone through this cycle

Portugal Golden Visa: Don’t Trust an Immigration Agency’s Marketing Numbers Without Verification

If you are considering using an immigration agency for the Portugal Golden Visa, there is one thing I believe is particularly important:

Do not automatically trust the numbers an agency publishes about itself.

Many companies advertise that they have “served hundreds or thousands of families,” have a huge number of successful cases, or are “industry leaders.” The problem is that these numbers are often very difficult for a potential client to independently verify.

For example, I came across a Lisbon-based immigration agency that appears to have been established around 2022, yet claims to have already served 800 families.

For a relatively young company, a number like this should at least raise questions unless there is some credible and verifiable basis behind it.

Whenever an agency advertises an unusually large number of clients, a simple question should be asked:

Where does this number come from, and is there anything that independently supports it?

Of course, immigration services have an important confidentiality issue. Genuine client information is private. A professional agency cannot simply show prospective clients hundreds of passports, residence applications, or client files.

That is exactly why I think potential clients should pay more attention to things that can actually be verified in person.

Whenever possible, visit the company before signing a contract.

Look at the actual size of the office. See how many people genuinely work there. Find out whether it is a permanent independent office, a property owned by the company, a rented office, or simply a desk inside a coworking/shared office.

None of these factors alone can guarantee professional service, but they are at least tangible facts that a prospective client can personally verify.

I would also be very cautious about relying heavily on Google Maps reviews when choosing an immigration company.

Google reviews are not the same as verified client records. In immigration, investment, legal services and many other high-value industries, purchased reviews, coordinated reviews and other forms of artificial rating manipulation do exist.

Therefore, having dozens or even hundreds of five-star reviews does not automatically prove that a company has handled the same number of genuine immigration cases.

When evaluating a Portugal Golden Visa agency, I would pay much more attention to:

  • How long the company has actually existed;
  • Whether it has a genuine and permanent physical office;
  • Whether the size of its team and office is consistent with the number of clients it claims to serve;
  • Who actually handles the legal and immigration work;
  • Whether you can meet the lawyers and service team;
  • Whether major marketing claims can be supported by independent information;
  • Whether the fees, contractual obligations and responsibilities are clearly explained.

Immigration can be a 5-year, 10-year or even longer relationship with a service provider.

A beautiful website, hundreds of five-star reviews and impressive “success numbers” are relatively easy to create.

A real operational team, long-term presence, substantial office infrastructure and genuine service capability are much harder to fake.

So my advice is simple:

Don’t rely only on marketing. Don’t rely only on Google ratings. If possible, visit the company and verify things yourself before making a decision.
