I built Meeting Interpreter — real-time speech translation for Windows

Hi r/windowsapps,

I’m the developer of Meeting Interpreter, a Windows application I’ve been building for real-time voice translation.

The idea is simple: two people should be able to speak naturally in different languages without constantly stopping to type or manually translate messages.

Meeting Interpreter currently includes:

Real-time speech-to-speech translation
Duplex mode for two-way conversations
Single-direction mode for meetings and calls
Face-to-Face mode for in-person conversations
• Live transcription and translated speech output
• Designed specifically for Windows

My main focus has been keeping the conversation flow natural and reducing the delay between speech, translation and playback.

I originally started building it for situations where people need to communicate during online meetings despite speaking different languages, but the Face-to-Face mode has also become an important part of the app.

Website: https://meetinginterpreter.com

https://github.com/meetinginterpreter/meeting-interpreter

I’d really appreciate feedback from Windows users, especially about the UI, translation workflow and what features you would expect from an application like this.

If anyone has questions about how it works, I’m happy to answer them.

We found a Unicode character that Google Translate always turns into 卍.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine was browsing through the Unicode character tables, and he came across this character: 偍 (U+504D).

It seems completely ordinary at first glance, but it actually hides something strange. If you try to translate using Google Translate, you'll get a swastika as the output, no matter which language you choose. Not the word, but the symbol itself:

Of all the ones he has tested, that's the only character that exhibits this peculiarity. For example, its two neighbors in the Unicode tables (0x504C and 0x504E) have common translations (as expected, since these are the "first" Chinese characters listed and are assumed to be fairly commonly used)

https://preview.redd.it/i5i2ybcfsejh1.png?width=1876&format=png&auto=webp&s=dfd9d7ada7a978380e5bed9c22188de8e1ab9e4d

The only clue we have is that the Unicode for the swastika is 534+D, which is quite close to that of our character, off by just one digit. So perhaps it’s an error in the database. But it’s still quite curious, and we haven’t found any other mention of this oddity on the internet.

Now we're turning to you, first because this little mystery is worth sharing, but also, and above all, in the hope of uncovering possible leads and better explanations.

EDIT: tysm to all the people who have clarified the use and meaning of the swastika symbol, which happens to be used as a cartography symbol for a Buddhist temple on a map, probably among others. We both had no idea; the swastika symbol, regardless of which way it faces, is closely associated with Nazism in our French minds, but we're glad to learn.

It still doesn't explain why Google translated it that way, but apparently the anomaly has been removed.

Thanks y'all :]

Mongolian auto-translate on Youtube is hilarious

Ideally I would like to watch CS matches without any commentary at all but I haven't found any channel that uploads that. So instead I have found a channel with commentary in Mongolian, with a guy that has a nice calm voice. I find the language to be really pleasant to listen to! I don't understand anything, and that's the point.

Today I tried to switch on the auto-translated subtexts and hilarity ensued.

What wrong with grabbing the fish from behind?

Google translate has me thinking i may secretly be a mega polyglot

So i was commenting on a post from my friend and i decided i would just comment some rubbish for fun and we continued replying to each other this way but he was just using some random language from google translate while i kept writing nonsense and later i pasted them in Google Translate. Looks like this "rubbish" makes sense in other language i don't speak. I just thought it's weird. Is this accurate or it's just GT making stuff up? Would love to know.
