Goth Music Database one year anniversary, new features and the road to 1000 bands

Hello everyone!
Exactly a year ago the domain gothdb.com was registered, and the site became reachable from the outside world. Since then, we have grown immensely in terms of content and features, of course owing a lot to the two promotional posts here on r/goth that brought the blood to the project and let it thrive.

Currently we host almost 700 bands with full discographies (including labelled genres and links to Discogs/YouTube/Bandcamp for major releases) and are well on our way to reach 1000 bands by the end of the year, owing to the dozens of contributors who keep working and fleshing out the database. We only allow bands that have released at least some goth material, but it's interesting that we feature dozens of non-goth genres due to those bands dabbling into them or even crossing their goth sound with them. So here's the definitive proof that goth is not just a handful of 80's bands or their worshippers with little diversity!

We have also implemented a good deal of changes and new features since the last post in December, like supporting Second Wave of Gothic Rock and Positive Punk as separate genres, breaking Coldwave down into two subgenres (Minimal and Atmospheric), allowing users to keep track of the music they've listened to by adding bands as favourites and rating albums. This is in addition to the already existing features like advanced search by various criteria, similar artists voting and "Is this band goth?" tool.

I will keep on working on even more new features like creating lists of bands and releases, hosting some kind of public discussions of the music and adding new ways to more easily find the specific music you need.

We would be happy if you spread the word about GothDB, give your feedback about the site itself, contribute by fixing stuff around (this page has bands that need additional work) or adding new bands and their discographies, or just register to vote for similar artists and join the ranks of your favourite bands' fans.

Tomorrow is World Goth Day (I swear that GothDB's anniversary being the day before is a complete accident, but I guess it's fate), so I wish everyone to keep listening to great music and finding even more!

What the hell is ts

I usually dont mind wtv this style is called but the part where they all call themselves goths while making of, knowing nothing about the culture, have no respect for actual alt people AND still getting millions of views seems crazy to me just bcz of them ‘goth’ lost its meaning whenever someone mentions goth its usually for kinks nowadays. (Sry for bad grammar and English not my first language)

melancholic deathrock songs?

i’m trying to compile a playlist of deathrock songs that have more of a subdued, hopeless feel to them, or a mix of anger and despair, and am looking for more recommendations to add!

some songs on the playlist so far, to give an idea of the sound i’m looking for:

- last will and testament - nox novacula

- my funeral my party - horror vacui

- winter - ötzi

- egypt - voodoo church

- our love has no goodbyes - the kentucky vampires

- time - tears for the dying

(i’m happy with suggestions from across broader goth and punk if you feel they fit the mood, but i’m looking for emphasis on live instrumentation, especially on drums and guitar, with minimal/no synth effects, thanks!)

Goth shoes for disabled?

Hi!! I’m goth but I find it so hard to wear any type of goth shoes due to my feet and legs.

They swell throughout the day making it hard for me to wear shoes since I need space above and to the sides of my feet. It’s also hard to get my feet into shoes too.

I’ve found it’s easiest to put boots on if the zipper is in the back. It also can’t be too big of a shoe because if my feet fall off my foot plate (I have a band on the back, but my feet kick off the front due to spasms and I’ve never been able to secure them in place successfully.) they might get caught on the floor and hurt me.

I’ve worn the same shoes for 10 years and I’m starting to get tired of them. They’re the only comfortable shoes I’ve had so I just keep repairing them anytime they break. Not to mention they’re white and being goth with white shoes is kinda weird XD.

I’m honestly not sure what options I have, but I’d love if anybody could give me ideas or even links to accessible goth shoes! Thank you!

any goth youtubers yall recommend watching?

i do NOT mean the ones performing being goth, or just "doing it for the sake of views/goth dommy mommy bs/etc"...i want the folks who talk without any pretending, talk about ACTUAL goth topics(history, tips, their personal experiences)...currently, i REALLY like angelina benedict. i love how the topics are versatile. occasionally, i'll watch drama kween or demetri falco(both of these just share THE SAME vibe, which i like), but it is mostly about reacting, commenting current ongoing (mostly social media) problems - which i do enjoy, but i want the ones that are more about...daily life. life lessons/being an alt kid in the 90s experiences.
thanks to anyone who'll be giving me some channels - AND - i also remember this one goth woman who goes to goth cons? has a kid? anyone remember her name? more like...vlogs? but they used to be pretty long(ahem, is 20mins a lot?) EDIT: yeah...i was talking about itsblackfriday, it seems.
ciao!!

Are goth against marriage?

I had a debate with my friend where he said that i shouldn't obsess over marriage because goth girls (that i find very cool) would never want to get married. He said that it's against the "goth archetype/ideology" is it true?

Saw people posting patches, so I wanted to share two of my most favorite pieces

Patch space tends to be limited for how many good bands there are, so sometimes you gotta zip them up.

How do we feel about Gloria Mundi?

I know they are labeled glam-post-punk, but I feel like they are goth or at the very least proto-goth. They emerged with the Bat Cave crowd and Peter Murphy is stated liking them. Even there stage performances remind me of Bauhaus. I love to hear what you think. Goth? Or Not Goth?

Ultra Sunn (May 12, Detroit)

They put on an -amazing- show! Sam was so extra and interacted with the crowd quite a bit, haha.

Sorry about the camera dipping towards the end. I stepped on some trash and it startled me because I thought it was someone's phone for a second.

Best literature on the history of Goth through music/subculture?

I am an avid reader particularly books written about music genre histories and musician biographies/autobiographies. Can anybody suggest what some of the best books may be walking through the beginnings of Goth up into the present? Articles are also welcome 😁
