Goth Music Database one year anniversary, new features and the road to 1000 bands
Hello everyone!
Exactly a year ago the domain gothdb.com was registered, and the site became reachable from the outside world. Since then, we have grown immensely in terms of content and features, of course owing a lot to the two promotional posts here on r/goth that brought the blood to the project and let it thrive.
Currently we host almost 700 bands with full discographies (including labelled genres and links to Discogs/YouTube/Bandcamp for major releases) and are well on our way to reach 1000 bands by the end of the year, owing to the dozens of contributors who keep working and fleshing out the database. We only allow bands that have released at least some goth material, but it's interesting that we feature dozens of non-goth genres due to those bands dabbling into them or even crossing their goth sound with them. So here's the definitive proof that goth is not just a handful of 80's bands or their worshippers with little diversity!
We have also implemented a good deal of changes and new features since the last post in December, like supporting Second Wave of Gothic Rock and Positive Punk as separate genres, breaking Coldwave down into two subgenres (Minimal and Atmospheric), allowing users to keep track of the music they've listened to by adding bands as favourites and rating albums. This is in addition to the already existing features like advanced search by various criteria, similar artists voting and "Is this band goth?" tool.
I will keep on working on even more new features like creating lists of bands and releases, hosting some kind of public discussions of the music and adding new ways to more easily find the specific music you need.
We would be happy if you spread the word about GothDB, give your feedback about the site itself, contribute by fixing stuff around (this page has bands that need additional work) or adding new bands and their discographies, or just register to vote for similar artists and join the ranks of your favourite bands' fans.
Tomorrow is World Goth Day (I swear that GothDB's anniversary being the day before is a complete accident, but I guess it's fate), so I wish everyone to keep listening to great music and finding even more!
