Is it safe to wait until 1-3 days ahead to book flights/tours/hotels?

I'm thinking about visiting Greenland in the middle of next month. I'm looking at flying into Nuuk and then immediately flying to Ilulissat, stay there for maybe 4 days, and then fly to Kangerlussuaq for a couple days, then fly back to Nuuk. I could reverse Ilulissat and Kangerlussuaq if you think it'd be better.

I've heard that the weather can be unpredictable though, and tours and flights may be canceled. So is it possible to not book any of the Ilulissat tours and the flight to Kangerlussuaq (and the hotel) until 1-3 days ahead when I know what the weather will be like? Or do these tours and flights and hotels all fill up long before that?

The tours I'm thinking of are an iceberg tour, Eqi Glacier tour, Russell Glacier and Point 660 tours, and northern lights tours.

I’ve returned to Qaanaaq!

When I first started coming to Greenland back in 2016, I became obsessed with going north as much as possible. I wanted to make it to Qaanaaq and so I did in 2019 only to be delayed by a week because the plane was overweight and I had an early version of Covid and was so sick I nearly needed medevac. But I turned out to be ok and got 4 days here not in bed.

It’s such a special place but hard to get to and the flights are outrageously expensive. But it changed me for the better. I saw a subsistence whale harvest here and seeing community come together for mutual survival, I then became obsessed with remote Greenland.

After Covid lockdowns I went to Ittoqqortoormiit and fell in love with the town and its people there. It’s hard to get to but easier and cheaper than Qaanaaq so I have spent substantial time there.

The dream was always to come back. Here I am. I’m going to stay as long as I can for a couple months and live the slower life with binoculars and paying attention to the wind and howling dogs and getting to know the people that I met in four days and have maintained Facebook friendships with over the years.

It was like a homecoming yesterday. One of the best days ever especially after getting to Ilulissat was a little touch and go for my travel buddy. But we are here and now I can finally relax! 🇬🇱💪🏽

Welp, so much for the eclipse in Greenland. Super cloudy here in Ilulissat [OC]

The partial eclipse is supposedly visible from here in Ilulissat today. But it has been foggy and cloudy all day.

The total eclipse is on the east coast near Ittoqqortoormiit where there are so many vessels. Hope they have better luck!

Where should we visit?

Where should we visit?
Hi everyone!
My family has a long connection to Greenland, and now we’re looking for some of the hidden gems and lesser-known places that we absolutely shouldn’t miss.

My grandmother and father lived in Greenland for many years. My grandmother worked for both the Governor and the Chief of Police, so they travelled quite extensively around the country. Unfortunately, my father doesn’t remember much about all the smaller and larger settlements they visited, so we’re hoping to discover some of those places for ourselves.

So far, we’ve visited Kangerlussuaq, Ilulissat, Igaliku, Narsarsuaq, Sisimiut, Oqaatsut, Nuuk and Qeqertarsuaq. Last year, my girlfriend and I spent three weeks camping in Greenland, travelling through Kangerlussuaq, Ilulissat and Sisimiut.
This time, we’re planning a longer trip of around 4 weeks to a month. We’re bringing my mother and older sister, who have never been to Greenland before, so of course we want to show them some of the classics - Point 660, Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq are definitely on the list since we’ll already be up there.
But we’re really looking for hidden gems and places that aren’t necessarily on every tourist itinerary.
We’ve heard a lot of great things about Paamiut and Aasiaat, for example.
Our group is a bit mixed: my girlfriend and I will be camping, while my mother, father and sister would preferably have a warm bed to sleep in. So we’re looking for places where we can combine the two - accommodation for them, while we can camp or potentially hike somewhere nearby.
So, Greenlanders and Greenland experts: where should we go?

We’re especially interested in:
🏔️ Hidden gems and small settlements
⛺ Amazing places to camp
🌅 Incredible places to wake up
🥾 Hikes suitable for people with young, strong legs and slightly older parents
🐋 Wildlife and spectacular scenery
🏘️ Places that give us a real feel for Greenlandic life
🚤 Places worth taking a boat trip to
❤️ Places that you personally love and think tourists often overlook

We’re not necessarily looking for the most famous sights - we’re looking for those “how the hell did we not know about this place?” experiences.
Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

And if you know of a small settlement where we absolutely must spend a few days, please tell us why. 😊

Total solar eclipse in East Greenland 🌒

Hours of anticipation… then those unreal two minutes of totality when everything changed.

We would like to share a few magical photos from the total solar eclipse that took place on board MS Spitsbergen in East Greenland yesterday 🌒 The moment of totality transformed the scene around us, with daylight giving way to darkness and the surrounding landscape taking on a completely different appearance.

For those brief moments, everyone on board stood together watching the eclipse unfold above. A rare expedition moment reminding us how extraordinary it is to be in the right place at the right time ✨

We’re beyond excited to have shared totality with all our wonderful guests on this sailing 🤩

Report on UA 80 EWR-GOH today (8 August)

Flight was full actually. This is the third time I’ve flown the route. So it was surprisingly full this time. Not the case at all last year around the same period just before hunting season.

Lots of people going on fishing expeditions and hunting. Several arriving for cruises and general travelers that wanted to visit Greenland because it’s only 3 hr 50 minutes away from NYC area.

The luggage didn’t take as long as I expected. But the immigration passport control did take a while. I was in seat 14F and it still took 20 minutes just to get through to check my passport. There is a queue as soon as you enter the building.

If anyone has mobility problems, there is no jetway. So you’re expected to take stairs with your carry on luggage.

There were not a lot of taxis available and I was one of the first people out. So expect that it might take a while.

The food aboard the United flight in economy was disappointing. I got the chicken. It was three tiny pieces about 2 cm wide and 4 cm long. And then a shit ton of polenta. Order the pasta.

We took off 40 minutes late and we landed only 25 minutes late so it wasn’t that bad. Beautiful views on the way down. You can sit on either side of the plane and get a good view coming in.

All in all, the flight is expensive but I’ve done it 3x now and it is an incredibly convenient way to get to GL. I prefer going through Denmark personally because that’s what I’m used to and I prefer Greenland in the winter.

I heard they’re not flying to Nuuk next year if Ilulissat airport opens on time. So let’s see what happens. That’s an unconfirmed rumor.

Mid September trip?

Hi all! Is mid September a good time to go to Nuuk? I’m planning on going around September 19 but I’m not sure yet. Is it already snowing by then? Is it dark out early already or is it still light out pretty late?

Thanks in advance!

Questions about bag limits for air Greenland

Hi everyone! I’m going to Greenland in 2 weeks and had a question about flying with Air Greenland.

I searched online but wasn’t able to find an answer. I know the carry on dimensions and weight limit (8kg) which I’m good with and will be taking a 40L backpack. I also saw that we can take a handbag/jacket etc. I’ll be bringing a shoulder bag - 6L to carry my iPad, wallet, headphones etc. my question is does that bag get weighed as well? Ie if my backpack is 8kg does that mean I can’t take a shoulder sling bag? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Amazing Geology in Northeast Greenland National Park - Segelsällskapet Fjord [OC]

The coolest rocks and mountains I've ever seen. You can't access this area unless you go by boat. (Expedition cruise) But it is absolutely stunning and otherworldly. Not all ships can access it because you need a special permit for the national park.

Taken 15 August 2025.

When the travel news is slow, I post old pictures.
