Is it safe to wait until 1-3 days ahead to book flights/tours/hotels?

I'm thinking about visiting Greenland in the middle of next month. I'm looking at flying into Nuuk and then immediately flying to Ilulissat, stay there for maybe 4 days, and then fly to Kangerlussuaq for a couple days, then fly back to Nuuk. I could reverse Ilulissat and Kangerlussuaq if you think it'd be better.

I've heard that the weather can be unpredictable though, and tours and flights may be canceled. So is it possible to not book any of the Ilulissat tours and the flight to Kangerlussuaq (and the hotel) until 1-3 days ahead when I know what the weather will be like? Or do these tours and flights and hotels all fill up long before that?

The tours I'm thinking of are an iceberg tour, Eqi Glacier tour, Russell Glacier and Point 660 tours, and northern lights tours.

Kids can be funny

I was at the club recently, and a little kid asked to hit around with me. I said sure.

This kid proceeded to blast several balls super fast past me. I started thinking "Oh yeah? Let's see you try to blast this..." I gave him a bunch of backspin serves, and he blasted every single one into the net. He said "How are you putting so much spin on the ball?"

After a few more of those, the kid came up to me and said "What kind of paddle do you have?" He looked at it and said "I might have to buy this off you." Which was really funny, because that day I was using one of my cheap Coles TT paddles.

Then he asked to try out my paddle, so I took his paddle. I did some more backspin serves, which he smacked into the net, and he said "How are you doing that with MY paddle?!" I thought it was pretty funny.

Anyone get back pain from table tennis?

Sometimes during a rally, I like to put sidespin on a shot using the tomahawk motion. A few nights ago, I was practicing with a couple people, and I figured out a way to put way more sidespin on the ball than I normally do using the tomahawk motion. I guess it was a really extreme motion, because by the end of the session, my elbow was hurting a bit.

The elbow pain is gone, but right after that session, my back started to hurt with a bit of abdominal pain as well. Mostly it's back pain and it was pretty bad today. I wonder if it's just a coincidence or if the extreme motion on the sidespin shot caused my back to hurt.

Can I learn a new technique in 6 weeks?

A long time ago, I took a bowling course in college. They taught us the hook ball, and by the end of the course my average was somewhere around 150. I have only bowled occasionally since then.

My employer is having a bowling tournament in 6 weeks, and I want to get some practice in before then. Maybe get my average back up near 140-150 if possible. I searched for hook ball tutorials on Youtube, and it seems that people nowadays don't use the technique that I was taught back then. Apparently the technique that I was taught is the "suitcase method", and it's not good for oil patterns used in today's bowling alleys.

I bowled a couple games today for the first time in a few years. I got 89 and 99. What I noticed is that with the suitcase method, the ball barely hooked at all. I had to stand basically in the middle of the lane, instead of standing further to the right (I am right-handed), in order to make up for the fact that there was so little hook.

Since your chances of getting a strike are highest if you can hook the ball into the 1-3 pocket, do you think I should try to learn a modern hooking technique in the next 6 weeks? I already paid for a pass that lets me go as often as I want, so I could go 5-7 days a week. Or should I just stick with this suitcase method, which seems to be almost like throwing a straight ball?

Why would someone throw matches like this?

I looked at the tournament history on JustGo of a guy who was the top rated player in the Under 1300 division of a recent tournament. He has played in over 10 tournaments, and has beaten several players in the 1600-1800 USATT range. He also lost 3-2 a couple times to players in the 1400-1500 range, so I believe his true rating is around 1500-1600. His results in the last few tournaments have been very suspicious though, and his rating has been plummeting.

I watched him play a match against a kid rated 800 in the recent tournament. In game 1, just before every one of his serves, he pointed to the corner where he was going to serve. Then once the rally started, he would stand back and lazily lob the ball and let the kid attack. Every time the kid won a point, he would compliment the kid. Clearly he wasn't trying to win. The kid won game 1 easily.

Then just before game 2, he told the kid "I want you to play your best. Just try your best." He then proceeded to unleash some of the craziest sidespin serves I've ever seen. I've played in a lot of tournaments and have never seen anyone under 1300 do serves as tricky as those. The kid couldn't return any of them. The guy won game 2 easily.

Then in game 3, the guy was back to playing like he did in game 1, so the kid won game 3 easily. Then in game 4, the guy was back to playing like he did in game 2, so he won game 4 easily. Then in game 5, the guy seemed to turn it on and off, and lost 11-9.

He played 4 other matches against people rated no higher than 1000 where all 4 matches had the same pattern - he lost game 1, he won game 2, he lost game 3, he won game 4, and he lost game 5 11-9. He also lost 3-0 to a little girl who was rated 200. His rating dropped by over 200 points just from this tournament.

Now I see that he has signed up for an upcoming Under 1200 tournament that I also signed up for, and I'm concerned about if I have to play him. Will he decide to start playing for real and destroy me? That wouldn't be cool to lose to someone whose true rating is 1500-1600 and is overqualified for the tournament. Or would he throw the match against me? I wouldn't want to advance in a tournament because someone threw the match.

Just wanted to put in a good word for u/hybroid, who helped buy some items in Australia for me and then shipped them to the US. He gave me very detailed information on what all my shipping options were, and also provided links to prove that he wasn't making stuff up. He also sent screenshots for everything, so that I knew exactly what I was paying for. He even figured out a clever way to pack my stuff to help me save on shipping.

I appreciate his transparency (I will say from experience that not all buyers on this sub are like that, and some will try to rip you off), and I will definitely be contacting him again the next time I need to buy something in Australia.
