Doodle quilt update

Doodle quilt update

I posted a few weeks ago about my doodle quilt, a small hand piece where I’m quilting little doodles. Thought I would share an update. I have about half the area covered in doodles now. I’m filling in the gaps with a black seed stitch for more texture.

The seed stitch feels so nice. I keep getting distracted by stopping to pet it.

Any suggestions for other things to add?

ocean wave design help!

hi friends! I just got my backing and batting for my Inky quilt and I really want to hand quilt it with an ocean waves all over pattern like the designer did here. does anyone have any tips for how to do this by hand? I’m struggling to find the right words to put into google to help me out or to even get close enough to the image to get a clear idea of how all the swirls go together.

does this design have a specific name I can dig into? or does anyone have any general tips on tackling something like this? should I just stick to something more simple if I’m not going to get it long armed?

pattern for the quilt is here https://phoebemoon.com/quilt-patterns/inky-twin-quilt-pattern/?srsltid=AfmBOoo1aV8vgLCTjgMPrxSu9lxlycN-KNIXtva2Lk0XRjJpaNpExUrH

Why you should enter a quilt in your local fair.

I hear a lot of people say when I ask them if they have a quilt entered at the fair, that they aren't like a "real quilter". So I thought I would do a video saying why even if you aren't " a real quilter" why we still want you to enter. Let me know weather or not you agree, or if you have any thing to add :)

What do you use to trace your template on the fabric

I learned 25 years ago to only use a ballpoint pen. For the past 10+ years I’ve used the Bic Glide Ultracomfort. I just replaced mine, and the quality is not what it once was.

What do you use? I tried a pencil, but it doesn’t glide across the fabric very well.

I thought about gel pens. I just need something that is smooth and won’t bleed through

Batting alternative - flannel or muslin?

Hello! Total newbie here. I am planning on making a kantha type baby blanket as a gift. I have seen that people use old flannel sheets instead of batting. Has anyone ever used plain muslin fabric? Also - if I'm doing a hand running stitch like in kantha or Big Stitch quilting, does anybody have a preference between the two?

Thanks so much!

beginner alert-please advise!

hello! i am a beginner at hand quilting, but have embroidered and done sashiko for a while. my mother is a beautiful machine quilter. i am wondering if we can do a quilt that would be a hybrid— with her machine, she would sew a simple flying geese topper. then, rather than using a long arm to finish, i would hand quilt the top+batting+bottom in a sashiko-ish style. has anyone tried doing it this way, or do you think it would/would not work? any thoughts? thank you kindly!

Inside out / pillowcase / no binding method?

Hi all! Thanks so much for all of the help and inspiration this sub offers me, a very beginner quilter.

I’m curious what the general experiences /attitude are towards “binding” a quilt by sewing it inside out and then flipping it after.

I’m aware that would not allow for any shifting that might occur — I’m planning to hand quilt so that might be less of a barrier for me. I’m thinking I would spray baste my top and batting together, layer the backing on top and stitch around the perimeter leaving a small hole to flip it through. Then I could pin baste the three layers together and hand quilt.

My primary motivation for doing this is my desire to add a lace trim to the quilt and this seemed the best method to build it into the sandwich before stitching all the layers together. I’d love any feedback or experiences on adding lace to your quilts!

Incidentally the one other detail I have in mind is using Chenille It for “sashing” between blocks. Anyone have tips for this?

Thank you so much to anyone who read this far and can offer any support!

She's very sweet and cozy but boy she's making it hard to readjust.

Pattern is a single irish chain.
