I got roasted in another subreddit for even considering this as an option, but we are looking at properties and planning to move roughly end of year. We currently live in Dallas, but cost of living in recent years has increased exponentially with the surge of population. Yes, TX has no state income tax, but that matters less in full retirement than the very high property taxes.
I grew up in LA and MS, graduating from college in MS. I left MS shortly after college, and I thought I would never have a desire to live there again. The problem is that I am gay, and I repressed that side of me during my childhood and early adulthood.
I met my now-husband in Dallas almost 35 years ago, and we have lived in many different states during our time together (WA, CO, MA, SC, TX). We just happened to live in MA in 2004 when same-sex marriage was legalized (and only recognized in MA at the time). We are approaching our 20th anniversary of our marriage then, which (at least for now) is recognized in every state.
My husband grew up in AR, but we have ruled that out. He has only been in MS for visits with my family who live primarily in smaller towns in Central MS. That said, he loves that area.
I remember Hattiesburg to be more progressive than most of the state. It’s a college town, and it also has easy access to NOLA, Mobile, MS Gulf Coast, etc. We both are very low-key, especially in our later years (I’m 66; he’s 65). We just want to quietly live our lives in a LCOL area, but have access to bigger cities on occasion. We know there will be people who are non-accepting, but that can also be true in many large cities with a progressive culture.
We found a gay realtor in Hattiesburg. He and his partner have been there several years, and they feel very safe and accepted as a couple there. However, they are only in their 30s, so their crowd is going to be generally more open to LGBTQ individuals.
So, people in that area, what are your thoughts about Hattiesburg and the surrounding communities? We’ve also seen some beautiful properties in Sumrall and Petal, which gives us options for more acreage.
I'm not local to the area (MS Gulf Coast) but will be in Hattiesburg during the weekend and would like to walk/jog the Trace. I'm a young female by herself and I'd to go early (8ish) before it gets to be too hot (and crowded?) Where is a good starting point? I'd like to get about 4 miles in. I'm a little worried about the homeless population though.
I’ve been working as a manager at a restaurant chain in the area and when I got promoted I was told i’d be working for 14 an hour. A few weeks in I noticed my check probably wasn’t as heavy as it should be even after hitting several hours of OT and discovered I’m still at the base rate for starting crew members. Obviously I thought this was an error but when i brought it up to higher management they explained there was no pay increase at least not now, in a better world I would have just left but I need to pay my bills so I’ve gritted my teeth and continued on another month still a decent ways off from 14 an hour doing tasks way above the average workers. I still work there because job hunting sucks but if anyone has any insight or advice id very much appreciate it.
I’m very out of the loop, are there any data centers planned for the Hattiesburg area in the next few years?
I'm organizing a Star Wars-inspired parade krewe and we're looking for people to join us in the January 2027 Krewe of St. Catherine's Parade.
This is a walking parade (route is less than a mile) and we're aiming for a fun, relaxed atmosphere. If you can throw together a Star Wars-inspired look and enjoy being part of the fun, you'll fit right in.

I'm a big coin collector (numismatist) and am a member of the American Numismatic Association. Unfortunately, the closest coin club is Biloxi, and I don't want to make that drive (I live in Laurel and work in the Burg). I have been contemplating starting a coin club in Hattiesburg, both as a chance to set up a community, as well as give those interested the opportunity to have a market closer to us dedicated to buying and selling both coins and precious metals (that isn't just pawn shops trying to fleece buyers and sellers alike).
Would anyone here be interested in such a group? Or does anyone have any experience setting up something of this nature and would be willing to share information? Thanks for reading!
Hi! looking for nice pet grooming services specifically for a dog. any recommendations?
What are some cheap but good Mexican food places around town?
Anyone know of a place here that swaps the CO2 containers for a sodastream? I know various retailers do, but then find that the Hattiesburg location conveniently doesn’t haha
Also if there’s somewhere in a town over or something! I probably won’t take a trip for just that, but if I happen to be that way, I’d just make a stop.
TIA!
Kirb'ys Kleaning is ran by Kassidy Hawkins and Abigail Garrett. They both find men, try to sell their services to them, then turn around and black mail them to the community. They also dox people as well.
If you work at Waffle House at night and have the pink hair, I just want you to know that you are so beautiful! If I wasn’t married and twice your age, I’d pick out a ring. Your boyfriend or girlfriend is so lucky! If your single, I bet it won’t be for long. your perfect.
If you are looking for the best thing about this city I just found it at the raffle House in front of Rouses. She works nights and is a walking angel.
I'm looking for other folks who are interested in HEMA. I have some gear, but have to drive to New Orleans in order to attend classes.
Anyone else have the right combination of history nerdism, combat enthusiasm, and disposable income? 1v1 me in the park.
36M physician, men’s classic physique competitor, moving to Hattiesburg for job, looking for bodybuilding gym. Heard great things about Revolution. Any testimonials?? Thanks and God bless!
Recently the Longleaf trace that runs from Prentiss to Hattiesburg has removed all water fountains and locked the bathrooms due to vandalism. The board of directors over the Trace receive a quarter million in tax payer dollars and state grants every year. What are they doing with this money? A few years back they put in a massive parking lot, pavilion, and dog park along the trace in Hattiesburg. But we can't have water? It's South Mississippi in the middle of the summer. Surely they have enough money to hire better security. Please help by calling the board members to get this fixed. God bless
Looking for vet recommendations around town for our dog. Just need a checkup nothing is wrong. Have had a bad experience at our regular vet and don’t want to go back.

I've been in Hattiesburg for about 2 years now and I'm only just now trying to see what the local music scene is like. Are there any sort of metal bands or venues in Hattiesburg? Or even anything adjacent to that honestly, I just really enjoy going to live shows and would like to support local artists. Thanks!
Are there any indoor walking tracks that are open to the public? This heat is no joke
