3 years experience (2 years in Japan) as a Design Engineer, currently earning ¥250,000/month gross — is this fair, and what should I target for a switch?

Hi everyone,

I'd really appreciate honest but kind opinions from people with experience in the Japanese job market, especially in mechanical design/manufacturing.

A bit about my background:

  • Total experience: ~3 years (2 years in Japan)
  • Current role: Design Engineer at a small-to-medium manufacturing company (SME), working on mechanical design (JIS-standard, using IronCAD) for industrial equipment
  • Current salary: ¥250,000/month gross, ~¥200,000/month after tax and insurance deductions
  • I was told at joining that my annual package would be around ¥3.5M with bonuses, but since it's an SME, bonuses depend heavily on company profit and haven't been consistent

I'm now considering a job change (planning for early 2027, so still in the research phase) and trying to understand:

  1. Is my current compensation reasonable for someone with my experience level in Japan, or am I underpaid?
  2. What would be a fair/competitive salary range to target for a Design Engineer role with 3 years experience, ideally moving toward larger or foreign-capital companies?
  3. Any advice on how to evaluate offers or negotiate, especially coming from a small company background?

I'm not in a rush and just want to make an informed decision rather than jump at the first opportunity. Any perspective — even if it's not what I want to hear — is genuinely appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Job Hunting in Japa

Hey!!!

I recently graduated with an MBA in Leadership, Design, and Innovation in Japan, and I am currently seeking employment opportunities to secure my visa status. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations or leads you may have, and I would welcome the opportunity to connect further. Please note that my Japanese language proficiency is currently limited, so I am primarily targeting companies that are open to hiring non-Japanese speakers. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Deadline exceeded submission

I had passed an interview with a japanese company and had already received the offer letter. I signed the offer letter and sent it back. I was waiting for the next email asking for documents for visa status change processing. Btw i am currently living in japan with dependent visa. But this email was redirected to spam and I found the email just 7 hrs after the emails document submission deadline and immediately attached the documents and replied with an apology and cause.
Am i in problem?
I also called them the next day for follow up and they said they will see the email and reply me but they haven’t yet.
13 Thursday 3pm JST deadline
Mail replied same day 11:30pm
Follow up call friday 3:00pm
Till now no email

🇯🇵 Anyone here currently working in Niigata, Japan?

How’s life and work there? 😅
Is ¥230k/month a reasonable/sustainable salary in Niigata? How much do you typically spend on rent, food, transportation, etc.?

Just curious about the actual experience of people working there. Thanks!

What’s a Good Salary for a Manufacturing/Semiconductor Engineer in Japan? 🇯🇵

Would appreciate actual offers or first hand experiences rather than just online salary estimates. Anonymous figures are totally fine. 🙏
