Bass culture in the 1980s and early 1990s: influences on trip hop and jungle

How did bass culture go from Scientist and Prince Jammy in the early 1980s to the likes of jungle and trip hop in the early 1990s?

What’s the missing link here? I assume something was brewing in UK sound systems and bass culture in the mid 1980s and early 1990s.

Any recommendations for tracks or albums would be welcome.

On the Edit: Thanks for everyone who has been responding. I think part of the answer seems to a flourishing sound system and roots reggae scene (Matumbi, Steel Pulse, Saxon Sound etc.), leading to emerging British dub producers like Mad Professor (Beyond the Realms of Dub) and Creation Rebel (Starship Africa), Aswad’s A New Chapter In Dub (which already has a lot of the techno minimalism of later developments), an increasing focus on dread sounding vocalists like Linton Kwesi Johnson and most importantly Prince Far I (Psalms for I, and the Cry Tuff records), plus mixing and engineering pros like Dennis Bovell and Adrian Sherwood. Things get more digital and a little more separated from trends in Jamaica, as a British bass culture aesthetic starts emerging. Then you get acts like Dub Syndicate emerging, which are even more digital and starting to mix with techno, and hip hop elements like sampling and breakbeats, and which are transitional to the 1990s stuff. Any more insights welcome, particularly about specific artists and records! I’d love to hear from the old heads who were there, too.

Pirate radio storys

Defection wasn’t just pushing boundaries in the music, it was innovating in how it stayed on air.

One of the key strategies we developed was what we called the “jack-in-the-box.” Instead of leaving transmitters exposed and easy to find, we’d drop them down into pipes and secure them using a car jack, locking them in place, hidden, and hard to reach.

At the time, this wasn’t common. Most setups were still vulnerable, easy for the DTI to track down and remove. But this changed the game.

Suddenly, even when they knew roughly where the signal was coming from, getting to it was a different story. It slowed them down, threw them off, and for a good stretch, had them completely baffled.

That breathing space meant everything.

While they were trying to work out what was going on, Defection kept broadcasting, kept building, kept pushing the sound forward.

It’s a reminder that the innovation wasn’t just in the music, it was in the methods, the mindset, the willingness to think differently just to stay heard. 📡🔥

Rastaman - Unknown

Anyone know who made this?

Rastaman was written on the white label by previous owner and there’s no markings on the run off

Weekend Rush – A Pirate Radio Story

Before jungle exploded. Before drum and bass had a name there was pirate radio.

Broadcasting across London from tower blocks and rooftops, Weekend Rush was not just a station it was part of a movement that helped shape UK music forever. This is the real story of the underground, told by someone who lived it.

Step inside the early 1990s rave scene and the birth of jungle music, where pirate radio stations were the lifeline of the culture. DJs, MCs, and crews came together to create something raw, unfiltered, and unstoppable.

Transmitters hidden in flats.

Aerials rigged under pressure.

Police raids. Lock-offs. Rebuilds.

This was not just radio it was survival, passion, and culture in motion.

Long before the mainstream caught on, stations like Weekend Rush were already defining the sound of jungle and drum and bass, giving a platform to the voices that would shape a generation.

This is more than music history. It is a first-hand account of:

Pirate radio in 1990s London

The birth of jungle and early drum and bass

UK rave culture and underground music scenes

DJ and MC culture before the industry

The real stories behind the signal

If you were there, this will take you back.

If you were not, this is where it started.

For fans of jungle, drum and bass, UK rave history, pirate radio, DJ culture, and underground music, this is the story you have been waiting for 📡🔥

Pirate radio storys

When we first started Weekend Rush in the early 1990 there were no tiny mobiles you could slip in your pocket.

The phone we had was like carrying a car battery with a phone stuck on top of it. Proper heavy.

You didn’t just walk around chatting on it ,you had to lift the thing like you were moving equipment. And if you accidentally dropped it on your toe, that was it… show over.

You’d be hopping around the room while everyone else was laughing. In those days, the real risk wasn’t just the DTI turning up , it was that phone landing on your foot 😅📡🔥

Song Recommendations for someone that likes “Steamed Hams but it’s Jungle Music?”

I have never heard jungle music before stumbling upon this video. Did a quick search for other jungle songs but they didn’t really click with me like this steamed hams edit did. Are there any songs people would recommend if I like this?

What were some trackers that yall used to make music?

I think that trackers (specifically old ones from the late 80s all the way through out the 90’s) are very interesting and I would like to learn more about them. I’ve only ever heard of pro-tracker and fast tracker though, and I would be interested to hear about what trackers you all used to make music.
(Edit: I forgot about octomed)

Good sites to upload digitised vinyl?

Hey guys,

I’ve recently decided to start digitising my vinyl collection that I’ve had for a few years,

There’s lots of unlabelled tracks in blank sleeves that I’d love to share to try and ID them, the majority of my collection was bought off an ex DJ from Dublin and mainly consists of jungle, dnb and hardcore.

Aside from YouTube is there any recommended sites to share audio files and let people download them?

Thanks :)
