"Lancaster County, PA – Five years after his remains were discovered, the DNA Doe Project and their agency partners have identified Susquehanna River John Doe as 31-year-old Shane Allen Workman. Workman went missing from his home in Lewistown, Pennsylvania on April 25, 2017, over four years before his partial remains were discovered 60 miles away in Lancaster County.

On July 25, 2021, a duck hunter found three bones on a rocky islet in the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The tattered remains of some clothing, a pocket knife, a cigarette lighter, and fishing gear were all found near the remains. DNA testing later revealed that the bones belonged to a Caucasian male.

The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office later brought this case to the DNA Doe Project, whose expert investigative genetic genealogists work pro bono to identify John and Jane Does.

A team from the DNA Doe Project began research on this case in March 2026 and started making headway immediately. They quickly discovered that some of the unidentified man’s ancestors were from Appalachia, while others were Irish immigrants who settled in Philadelphia. As their research progressed, the team identified a couple from West Virginia as the great grandparents of Susquehanna River John Doe. Shortly thereafter, following just three weeks of research, they made a significant discovery.

“We were looking into our family of interest when we realised that one branch had relocated from Arizona to Pennsylvania,” said team leader Monique Platt. “The crucial breakthrough came just minutes later when we found a missing person report for a member of that family, who had not been seen since 2017.”

The missing person was Shane Workman, who was last seen leaving his Lewistown home to walk to a nearby gas station. He had a teenage daughter at the time he went missing, and his family made extensive efforts to find him in the years following his disappearance.

With the evidence lining up, the DNA Doe Project team presented Workman as a candidate to the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office. Further DNA analysis later confirmed that the man found in 2021 was, in fact, Shane Workman.

The DNA Doe Project is grateful to the groups and individuals who helped solve this case: the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office, who entrusted us with this case; Tetracore, Inc. for the lab work; GEDmatch Pro for providing their database; Bode Technology for the confirmatory testing; our generous donors who joined our mission and contributed to this case; and the DNA Doe Project’s dedicated teams of volunteer investigative genetic genealogists who work tirelessly to bring all our John and Jane Does home.

Costco Run

There have been an alarming amount of black people that are killed and hung in trees. As we all know BLACK PEOPLE DON’T HANG THEMSELVES ON TREES. Since March of 2025 there have been at least 22 cases. Just recently Trey Reid 🕊️, Tory Medley🕊️, And Kyle Bassinga 🕊️ to name a few. “Strange fruit” should’ve ended LONG ago.

I felt empowered to wear my Radical Resistance t-shirt “KILL THE KLAN” while running errands. It’s not surprising how many dirty looks I got but the amount of people who actively avoided me was kinda comical. It didn’t matter where. Whether is was Costco, Walmart, or elsewhere. In an aisle and in the parking lot.

All this to say racist should no longer feel comfortable anywhere at any time. So piss off your local racists.

Abandoned apple orchards, again?

Hi all, I'm a grad student at Binghamton University in NY. I study population genetics in the apple maggot fly and would like to come to the area to collect infested fruit and rear larvae.

Would anyone in this group know of any abandoned orchards in this area, or have any unsprayed trees with fruit?

I actually posted a couple of years ago and got got a great lead at ephrata Cloisters but unfortunately that site is not available this year, and I need a site in this area for my population study. I have exhausted my other leads for this area and was hoping people might have fresh perspectives LOL.

Thanks so much! You folks are always very nice and helpful.

Doctor who cares?

Looking for a doctors office who actually wants to invest in my lifestyle. I recently went to a Family Practice Center and I was shocked with how hands-off they were. Didn't touch me or palpate, just talking and bloodwork, which I guess is enough... But I want a doctor who is interested in my physical fitness, mobility, has diet recommendations. Basically someone who wants to push me to be even better. I feel like not having diabetes has been the bar to clear, and then they tell you to come back in 12 months for bloodwork. Maybe that's not the role of a doctor and they have more important stuff to do, but I was hoping to find a doctor that was doing more than checking the checkboxes in my well visits.

National Geographic published an article about farmers’ markets and Central Market was listed first.

I’ve always loved National Geographic and I was searching for a specific issue when I came across this article. I thought the picture was wonderful and the article was informative so I thought I’d share it here.

Avoid Faulkner Chevrolet at all costs

Longtime resident. I have purchased new and used cars locally since 1999. I have never had a worse experience than I had at this dealership.

They sold me a used car that they swore they had fully serviced. CarFax was clean, one owner, no accidents.

Someone lied.

It was in their shop for *2 months* just 45 days after I bought it. They said their techs couldn’t figure it out, then they sent it to another city for service and ghosted me for 2 weeks.

I ended up facing 2k in repair costs between that fiasco and subsequent issues — and then the car just up and died on me while I was moving my son into college this weekend.

I implore my fellow residents to go ANYWHERE else besides this business. I wont make that mistake again, for sure.

Mosquitos from abandoned pool

Has anyone near the Amtrak notice a astronomical amount of mosquitos? I’m pretty sure it’s coming mostly from the abandoned in ground pool at 67 Keller Ave, which is a sitting vacant property. Is there anything that can be done or do I just have to wait until it snows again to be able to go outside my house for a few seconds. I’m taking clouds of mosquitos attacking me not just one or two…

Lancaster City bike lanes

Anybody else find it super frustrating with bike lanes in the city? I appreciate the walnut bike lane going from one end of the city to the other but I can’t go back in that direction via bike lane. And I like the lemon st one but then it just completely ends. I know there are plans in the works but a better connected grid of bike lanes can’t come soon enough!!

what are the local rules for expanding a driveway in West Lampeter?

My partner and I are comparing properties near Willow Street and want to add an extra gravel parking pad. Does the township enforce strict impervious coverage limits on agricultural-adjacent residential lots or is it a simple zoning permit?

Found: Calico long haired cat

We found this extremely friendly long haired calico in the East Petersburg area. She seems to be lost. We're still in the process of getting her inside so we can help her. If anybody is missing her, we have fed her and left food out, so she might stick around here.
